A's make new offer to Furcal - 4yr/$40M

this just popped up on ESPN today.  I hope that Beane gets him for this.  I think that it could lead to an easier time adding a power bat FA with a more potent lineup capable of competing.  I would wager Beane has received interest from our prospective power FAs but they want a potent lineup to insert themselves into so as to make the most of a 1 or 2 year deal.

eh, took a small swipe at the guy

really think the A’s have put up a good couple offers for a guy pulled off the DL and I don’t care Beane being stuck flapping in the wind.

It's just more exciting with Billy Beane running the team.

I just read this and it sounds like Beane is really trying to get the deal done. C’mon Furcal! Sign on the dotted line you bitch!

According to

mlbtraderumors.com “Furcal likes the A’s the least, except they offered more money” After hearing that, how do you feel? If I were the A’s I’d pull the offer, if he indeed said that.

Pull the Offer

He seems to have serious entitlement issues. If he signs we will run the serious risk of having a bite-the-hand-that-feeds-you player on the team.

Cust is the new Jaha.

by johnjahafanclub on Dec 15, 2008 12:00 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Wait a minute

How is it an entitlement thing if a guy doesn’t really love the idea of playing in a piece of crap crime-riddled city? I love the A’s and all, but Oakland doesn’t have a positive reputation. That’s the nicest thing I can say about the city.

All the time fans complain about guys only wanting the money, and this is one situation where money is clearly not the only deciding factor and the player is ripped for that, too. So which is it? Should Furcal sign with Oakland because it’s the best offer or should he think about things like his family being shot because he chose to play in a truly awful place (even if the organization is wonderful)?

by thejd44 on Dec 15, 2008 12:16 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think the issue may be more a comfort thing.

Furcal has said he knows more people in the Kansas City organization than in the A’s organization and that he obviously feels comfortable in LA after being there for the the last 3 seasons. I don’t think it’s a “quality of life” issue, but rather just a comfort thing. He, as an employee, seems to think his working life would be easier in a place that he’s a little more familiar with.

I'm never gonna do it without the fez on!

excuse me, many of us here live and work in Oakland

and it is not a “piece of crap” city. It has the same problems as many other cities, particularly in tough economic times.

Oakland in the past has been a desirable destination for many players (one recent example, Piazza, chose it over a better financial offer from Texas.) Tim Hudson, Ramon Hernandez and Miguel Tejada all were quoted as wishing they could have stayed with the A’s.

I think the fact that the A’s — for the first time since the 1990’s - have completed two sub.500 seasons in a row hurts them much more with free agents. Those are the situations where teams have to overpay to get free agents to sign.

I used to work in Oakland...

And despite some wonderful folks…it is a piece of crap city.

by Bitey on Dec 15, 2008 1:18 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

With all due respect, you might want to take your "Oakland" glasses off for a second

and look around. Furcal had been living in SoCal for the past 3 years. Las Angelas and Oakland are two, very, very different places. I wrote a couple of weeks ago about how Oakland probably isnt his favorite destination which is why he hadnt signed yet, and somebody jumped all over me for saying it. It is hilarious that some people cannot see how a multi-millionaire athlete would not want to live in Oakland, CA when the prospect of living in the LA hills is in in the air.

I for one love the bay area. Dont kill me for saying the above please..! You just have to understand how to an athlete there may be places that he would rather play.

by son of wes on Dec 15, 2008 1:18 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The "LA Hills..."

… oops, I meant to post a comment.

Not sure what hills you are talking about, but whatever hills you are talking about they’re not as nice as the Oakland/Berkeley hills. I can understand that an athlete would want to play in LA purely because LA means star-power.

But, if Oakland’s a “piece of crap” city, then LA is a sesspool of a dump of a toilet of a city. Smog everywhere. Traffic no matter what direction you’re headed in. Gangs and crime are more prevelant than in northern CA. Plus, in Oakland, you’ve got San Francisco, Berkeley, Sonoma, and Napa, plus Tahoe, etc. close by. LA, you’ve got San Diego, Orange County, and Tiajuana, all of which are even bigger hellholes than LA.

So, take off your “I like LA” glasses for a second, and realize that LA offers nothing other than warm weather and the opportunity to rub elbows with Kobe Bryant and some movie stars. Other than that, you’re living in an absolute dump.

by Uncle Charlie on Dec 15, 2008 1:32 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Don't forget...

… the high fire hazard in the hills in LA.

Basically, you’re options are to live in the flat lands in LA, and to suffocate under a blanket of smog and car exhaust, or live in the hills, and have your house burn down in a fire.

I’ll take Oakland any day of the week.

by OaktownPower on Dec 15, 2008 1:37 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I've been to San Diego a number of times...

… other than nice weather and beaches, I think San Diego is nothing special. Populated predominately by meathead military donkeys. Very little variety in terms of things to do. Bay Area has much more going for it.

Hellhole may be a strong term, but was mostly a reaction to Oakland being called a “piece of crap” city.

by Uncle Charlie on Dec 15, 2008 1:41 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Wow....at least you dont generalize much...

“Meathead military donkeys”……Really? Just wow.

Bring back Hammer.

by OaktownPower on Dec 15, 2008 2:22 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Right...

… because calling Oakland a “crime-riddled, piece of crap city” where people have to worry about their family being shot when they walk out the front door… that’s not a generalization.

Everything I said (all of which should be taken with a few grains of salt) was in response to the ridiculous original statement at the top of this post by TheDJ44. You want to “wow” about generalizations, start with that comment and then work your way down. Don’t start with the retaliatory comment…

Not to mention, San Diego has always been, and remains to be, a military-dominated community. I don’t think there’s much disputing that, considering the Padres wear camoflauge unis for many of their home games… In other words, my statement (San Diego is populated by meathead military types) is much less of a generalization than TheDJ44’s comment (that people in Oakland have to worry about being shot when they walk down the street).

Anyway, more important things to discuss than why I don’t like San Diego… you can go ahead and like San Diego all you want.

by Uncle Charlie on Dec 15, 2008 2:45 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Haha...so one person generalizes

and you have to do the same? Comedy.

I never disputed there is a lot of military there, your generalization of them as “meathead donkeys” was the issue in the comment, not how many military people live in SD.

Gotta agree with you here.

I grew up in LA (Hell-A) and have spent lots of time in San Diego as well and I must say San Diego blows. Having lived in Seattle, Colorado, the Bay Area and now Chicago, San Diego is a “hell hole” of sorts. You’re spot on with the “meathead” mentality that dominates there. And no, not just with the military personel, it’s most of the people. Frat chimps everywhere. That place is douchebag central.

by Streams Of Whiskey on Dec 15, 2008 2:44 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Thank You

I knew someone would agree with me. Spend a night in the Gaslamp District and you’ll see.

Difference between San Diego and Oakland on a Saturday night: In San Diego, there’s a 1-in-1,000,000 chance you’ll get shot, and a 1-in-2 chance that some dumbass will try to pick a fight with you as you try to exit a bar. In Oakland, there’s a 1-in-100,000 chance you’ll get shot, and a 1-in-100,000 chance some dumbass will try to pick a fight with you as you try to exit a bar. I’ll take the slightly higher odds of being shot in return for the much lower odds of confronting some roided-out douchbag while walking down the street.

Oakland is calmer, cooler, more relaxed. San Diego seems to suffer from some sort of collective roid rage… I’m not sure wat it is. Maybe everyone down there is hopped up on andro and dehydrated from spending all of their time on the beach. San Diegans need to spend a little more time cooling out and enjoying life.

SD is not a hell hole

Yes, a lot of military people live there. No, they are not “meatheads.” Half my family lives there and many are in the military. Navy, Air Force. They are very professional, smart, work in complicated jobs using high tech military technology, and are upstanding citizens.

The same goes for fraternity guys. Another stupid stereotype based on movies like animal house and old school. Most of the guys in my fraternity were extremely nice and we have stayed friends since college, most are very smart and went on to successful professional careers. Sure we partied but what college student doesn’t? We also did a lot of charity work and stuff for our school.

I have been out to bars in SD many times and never had any problems. I think North Beach has 10x the amount of fights as Gaslamp.

I have been surfing many times in SD and noticed it is much more mellow than norcal spots (SC, SF), which are highly localized and where I often encounter problems with aggro-“meathead” locals.

Gross over generalizations do not justify gross over generalizations.

SD has also avoided becoming a HelLA freeway hellhole by building a great light rail system.

It really seems like San Diego has more per capita than most other places. Also the frat guy stereotype more often than not comes from life experience.

hahahahaha I never said anything about the city being a dump..

So while I understand your anger and your pride for the city you live, just try being more open-minded about it. I was the one saying how I love the bay area, but I can completely understand that a millionaire athlete would rather be somewhere else. I personally have lived in Orange County and San Diego( both for school) and they are beautiful, cool places. Dont let the preferences of athletes and where they want to live be a personal attack at you and where you live.

“Piece of crap crime-riddled city?” What kind of garbage is that? If there was a “reply by e-punching the e-jackass in the e-face” option, I would have hit it. Have you ever been to Oakland or the Bay Area? You’re clueless. Oakland, in particular, and the Bay Area, generally, is a great city to live in… ESPECIALLY if you make $10 million a year.

Furcal’s concern (if you are capable of reading between the lines) is his level of comfort with the A’s organization. He knows LA. He knows ATL. He knows people in KC. He doesn’t know Oakland.

No one said anything about Oakland being a “crime-riddle piece of crap” city… except you. Anyway, I hope someone describes your hometown as a piece of crap city someday… in the meantime, go root for the Reds or some other shit-ass team in a nice, clean city. The A’s don’t need fans like you…

Besides, what major-league city can’t be called a “crime-ridden piece of crap” given the proper context?? Exactly

Regardless of how you feel about the Oakland vs. Southern California nonsense, the idea that Rafael Furcal’s family would be in any danger of being shot wherever he wound up living in the Bay Area is patently stupid.

Shockingly enough, on $40 million you can afford to live in parts of the Bay Area that don’t resemble Oakland in the slightest.

This: “Should Furcal sign with Oakland because it’s the best offer or should he think about things like his family being shot because he chose to play in a truly awful place (even if the organization is wonderful)?”

is a profoundly ridiculous thought.

He might just not like the SF Bay Area at all....specifically Danville/Black Hawk

I can easily get shot in St Louis, but I prefer it to California. It has nothing to do with crime. It’s a lot more about culture. Furcal might just prefer the LA culture, or he might be ambivalent about what he perceives as stinginess of the A’s organization. I’d be concerned about both if I were he.

No and no

The Bay Area (which is really where you live when you work in Oakland) offers a level of culture that is closer to the 90th percentile than it is to the 50th percentile. It isn’t LA – to some it’s better to some it’s worse – but it is not lacking in culture.

The A’s are being far from stingy. They’re offering more years than anyone else will, they’ve offer the exact amount of money Furcal first said he was seeking (and that was BEFORE the market for him shrunk) and they have offered a deal that is a lot for them – which is opposite from being stingy.

LA and the Bay Area are neither superior nor inferior from one another, they’re just different. Maybe he prefers LA. Fine. But the A’s have done what they can to sign him and if he says no, the city of Oakland is hardly to blame.

By culture I mean "Do people there think like I think? Are we on the same

wavelength?" Personally, in my case the answer was “No”. If Furcal’s lived in the DR, Atlanta and LA, the answer might be “No” for him too…or at least “Not as much as LA”.

As far as stinginess, the whole Moneyball reputation gives the aura of “We think players are fungible and we’re going to look for ways to get the same WAR for a fraction of the cost”. And taking a guy to Fatapples rather than Chez Panisse doesn’t help here.

Oh! OK. You said "culture,"

not belief systems, so I was confuzzled. Yeah, for all we know Furcal is immensely homophobic and is worried he might catch “gay” from living too close to S.F. In fact, having thought of it just now, I think I’ll go post it as a “likely factor” on every blog – citing a “mystery source”!

I can buy that

That I have no trouble with.

That Furcal would not choose the A’s because because he’s afraid of his family getting shot in Oakland is utterly nonsensical. Incomprehensibly ridiculous. Fantasmorgasmically quacked.

For SF and the BA? Exactly what kind of culture is Furcal into? I guess if Furcal is into monster truck rallies, rodeo shows, I could see why he might not want to live in SF and the BA.

I’m assuming that it’s now between Oakland and LA. Kansas City has been unable to move Guillen, and I don’t think Toronto was ever a legit contender for his services.

From what's been reported

I think the highest the Dodgers have been willing to go was the 2/25 deal with a vesting option for a third year. I don’t think they’ve been willing to guarantee even a third year let alone a fourth. Of course this is just what’s been reported, take it with a grain of salt.

I don't see how a UNC fan could be an A's fan

UNC, along with Duke, are like the Red Sox and Yankees of ncaa basketball. They are annoying and get all the east coast media bias. They rep out of a lot of games by getting more wuss fouls called on them than anyone. They are the exact opposite of A’s fans. Oh yeah, and they are tobacco schools funded by blood money from companies that have killed millions of people.

I am, frankly, disappointed that multiple ANers are UNC fans.

I retract with re: UNC

It looks like UNC recently enacted a ban on using tobacco company funding. However, for a long time they got a lot of their funding from big tobacco.

However, the other tobacco road schools are still heavily involved with big tobacco. The Duke Endowment was founded by a tobacco magnate and Wake Forest agreed to move its entire location to the city where RJ Reynold’s headquarters is located so they could get tobacco funding.

Pretty lame argument

Aside from the “buying championships” issue, which is basically irrelevant here, I don’t really get it. Are you saying that A’s fans should only like teams who don’t win a lot? And if their team does win, they should quit liking them?

So if the A’s spent $100 million and won 5 straight titles, would you abandon them because they’re too much like the Yankees?

by thejd44 on Dec 15, 2008 12:20 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

my point

is they are the bandwagon teams that get all the bandwagon fans come march because of all the media hype around their programs…

ergo going to see Duke play Cal half the stadium will be Duke “fans”, many of whom are not even Duke alumni

it’s just like going to a nyy-oak or bosox-oak game… all these casual “fans” come out and root for the big media team instead of their local team b/c of the media hype and bandwagon nature of the teams fanbase… they are an “evil empire” because they have a nationwide fan base of bandwagon fans who did not attend UNC/Duke and root for them merely because they are winners and are on ESPN every week with Dick Vitale talking them up.

To the small extent that I care at all about any college sports, I tend to root for UNC because I have some NC friends and have a pleasant memory of visiting the campus when I was young. I can see the argument of Duke fans equaling the Red Sox or Cubs fans, because they are one in the same mold. Frat boy d-bags, the majority of them. I know many ANers don’t understand the Cubs prespective as most aren’t in the midwest but they are just as bad, almost worse, than Red Sox fans.

I never considered UNC equal to Duke in that regard, always rooted for UNC over Duke. UNC seems like more of a normal university that has an awesome basketball program. Duke seems like a uber preppy trustafarian enrolled university, which most people can get behind disliking :) .

Some AN comments on Furcal lately have been really bothering me

I understand that people take it personally that he doesn’t want to play for the A’s as much as the Dodgers. But to be foul mouthed about it seems over the top.

Fans constantly deride major leaguers for being solely driven by money. Well now here we are, confronted with a guy who clearly has considerations beyond money, and we say “fuck him what an entitled asshole?”

How do we know he is not being driven by family considerations or other legitimate personal reasons? To blindly assume this guy is an asshole seems unfair, and to be honest it makes me sad how angry some people seem to be about this.

But I think there is a difference between

someone who is bad in the clubhouse and hates where they are, and someone who wants to get in the best deal for him.

I’ll take a personal example: we just had a reorganization at work. I was asked to move back into a position I had worked in before. I spent a couple of years trying to move out of the position and really did not want to go back into it. When I was approached by my manager about it, I made it very clear that my first choice was to stay with what I was doing and my least favorite option was to go back to the old role. Even when they discussed how it could be better long term for my career, I still said it was my last option.

Well the changes got finalized and I am back in the old role. Now that it is done and I know it is what it is, I am working my butt off at it and making sure the team gets the job done. Just because it wasn’t my first choice doesn’t mean I am going to torpedo everything here.

Now obviously there are big differences between my career and Furcal and his contract, but the same ideals apply. He is at one of the few times in his career where he can be really picky about where he goes and really try to get what he feels is “best”-be it money, location, length of service, etc. I don’t see any reason to believe that, just because we may or may not be his first choice to sign with doesn’t mean he won’t be 100% in once he does sign.

I think that's a bit overblown

He’s getting a nice amount of money, I doubt he is really going to be living in Oakland. I mean South Central and Compton are near L.A. and that didn’t deter him from that area. The idea that the team is located in a dangerous city isn’t that big of a deal, I’m sure he would find a nice place to live in the area where he doesn’t have to worry about getting “shot in the face.”

few A's players have lived in Oakland

Rickey lived in Grass Valley near the Oakland Zoo. Tony Phillips then rented Rickey’s house out for the 1999 season. Gaudin lived in JLS his first year. Thats about it for the past ten years, that I know of.

The Warriors on the other hand have had several players live in Oakland. Andres Biendrins lives in The Essex by Lake Merritt.

Several A's players have primary residences in Scottsdale, iirc.

Despite the fact that the Pink Pony is a dump.

A bunch also live east of the Caldecott during the season, where it’s often sunny, and the life expectancy exceeds “’til dark.” Katy’s Korner is a favored AM training table.

My point, in case I have one, is that we don’t even know where the Furkle family lives now, or whether they would move, regardless of where he plays his home games.

well said

What’s more, if the allegations are true, then Furcal’s preferences are: a) play for a contender, b) play for a team he’s familiar/comfortable with, c) play for an organization with execs he knows and trusts (which is not at all to say he outright doesn’t trust Beane).

I’d expect that most of the people mouthing off about Furcal’s (supposed) preferences are the same types who H8 on players who “take the money and run” and prefer big contracts to winning/personal happiness/unicorns and puppies. After all, as debate on AN evidences, the A’s ’09 contention status remains in some doubt.

If, in the end, Furcal does sign with the A’s, won’t it be a primarily money-based decision?

It doesn’t bother me one bit if he would prefer to stay in L.A. or go to KC given equal circumstances. If we limited acquisitions only to players who say the A’s are there favorite team I think it would be a pretty crappy team. If Furcal ended up taking our offer I think he would be a professional and play hard and would start to enjoy the team and the area.

I wouldn’t say the A’s, Dodgers or Royals would be considered favorites to win a championship anytime soon. Having said that, I do believe the A’s have the best chance of the three though.

and there’s plenty of evidence on AN that I’m a reputed thin-skinned whiny douchebag. We don’t know what “prefers the A’s the least” means, at all. We’re assuming that he went to Oakland, said, “what a dump!” and that was that..but it could’ve been anything. Property values in the area are higher than any of his other alternatives (including LA, depending on where, of course). Maybe he’s an avid sunbather and SF/Oakland are too overcast/foggy for his liking. Maybe it’s something with the A’s system itself, rather than something about the area. We don’t know yet…

True.

I’m not really pissed about the comment as I take time to think about it. As previously mentioned, we honestly don’t know the meaning behind the ‘Furcal prefers the A’s the least’ term. It’s no secret that Oakland does have a high crime rate. If he is reluctant to sign a contract with the A’s because he doesn’t like the city of Oakland or because he doesn’t feel that his family is safe, well that’s a personal decision that none of us should be questioning. Then again, if he perceives the team as not being competitive, that to me is just asinine.

by AEP2007 on Dec 15, 2008 12:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Crime?

Why is crime an issue?? Detroit and St. Louis have far higher crime rates than Oakland. It doesn’t stop them from signing players.

Plus, the only time Furcal will only be in Oakland is when he’s playing. ALL of the players live outside the city.

I don’t blame players for holding out for more money; that is their business, after all. Nor do I blame them for not wanting to play in a certain city; that will become their home. What I hate is when players talk BS like “It’s not about the money; I want to win a World Series” and so they sign a huge contractwith a crap team with virtually no chance of actually making the playoffs.

Yes it's fine to go for the best financial offer,

and it’s fine to prefer another organization to Oakland for any number of reasons. What irks me is the introduction of a fictional mystery team, naming the Blue Jays as suitors when they weren’t, saying “I want 4/40” and then saying “That’s not enough!” To me, the negotiations have been conducted, from Kinzer’s side, with a lack of integrity, and THAT bothers me more than the idea that Furcal actually has a first-choice that isn’t Oakland.

I think we're getting a bit too sensitive

For one thing, Furcal has never said anything publicly about the city of Oakland or the A’s. The report is based on speculation from people in baseball who are inferring that Furcal has not accepted the A’s yet because he would prefer to play for one of the other teams in the bidding.

In my opinion this is inferrence is likely true, but it’s important to remember that Furcal or his agent have never said anything against the team or the city. It’s not like he’s out in the media bad-mouthing Oakland. He just exercising a preference for where he would like to live if other circumstances were similar. Hopefully people will stop taking it so personally.

Agree

He’s never said anything negative about the A’s organization or the city.

I believe he’s hesitant because of the unfamiliarity with the AL. The A’s also only have one Spanish-speaking player, Casilla. Also, the weather was horrible when he was up here.

Mostly, he knows and likes LA both as a team and city,

and there is nothing about Oakland that especially appeals to him – it hasn’t won “recently” (two years) and it’s unfamiliar in every way. I don’t begrudge that he’s hoping for a better offer from the Dodgers; I do begrudge a bit the way it’s been handled.

Furcalgate is starting to wear on me

As to whether or not the guy wants to live in Oakland, I get the feeling it has less to do with crime and punishment than with the fact that the A’s have an old stadium, a small fan base, and most of all (in my estimation) a notoriously stingy clubhouse—i.e., having to buy your own soda, no post-game booze (thank you very much, Esteban), etc. Now, I’m not saying that it’s a major consideration; the dude should be able to buy his own soda with his shiny new contract. But the A’s do have that reputation. Plus, someone already mentioned familiarity is likely a factor here. To the extent that Furcal’s apparent lack of desire to play in Oakland will play a factor in where he signs, I would think those 2 things matter more than the city’s quality of life.

But as for the signing itself, this is a whole lot of courtship, pomp, and circumstance for a guy who a) reportedly would rather play elsewhere and b) has a decent chance of helping the A’s break their record for DL uses for a second year in a row. The latter is great news for Pennington/Petit fans, but it gives me pause.

So c’mon, Furcal: either sign the contract so I can start dreading your eventual injury, or take the practically contemptuous offer from the Dodgers and get out of my hair already.

Ryan Sweeney: I probably irrationally embraced him before you did.

by The Dogfather on Dec 15, 2008 2:35 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

There are several factors that Furcal has.

1. Health. Bottom line, if his back isn’t 100% healthy, it would be a rather dumb idea to not take the longer term deal that’s for more overall money.

2. Performance. If Furcal is confident that Point 1 is taken care of, it makes more sense to take the 2/25 deal because it’s more money per year AND he reaches free agency 2 years sooner, allowing him to be sought after again.

3. Age. Even if Furcal takes the 2 year deal, he’ll be 33 years old when the deal is done. There aren’t a ton of 33 year old shortstops that get long term, big dollar contracts anymore.

4. Potential FA shortstops. In the 2010/2011 offseason, there are some seriously big names who will potentially be on the market. Now, it’s not likely, but there COULD be names like JJ Hardy, Jimmy Rollins, Jose Reyes, Edgar Renteria, and Derek Jeter out there. Sure, it’s probably a zero percent chance that all 5 of them are free agents, but even if two of them are, that makes Furcal option #3 on the market.

Wouldn't that be counter-productive?

Because then LA could just say well if you really hate Oakland then you better take our offer.

I actually like this one

I like to see people get riled up about the pros and cons of Oakland every now and then

I think that the A's...

should have some of the current players calling and talking to Furcal. Other teams do that: have a popular player call a player they are courting a la Jeter and the Yankees…and the A’s should utilize that tactic a lot more.
PS Oakland does look pretty bad compared to other stadiums and areas. Yes, there are some nice areas of Oakland but less nice areas than LA offers. JMO

Ellis and Chavez would be the logical ones to do this

None of the A’s have played with Furcal before AFAICT

I know that he hasn't played with any of our guys...

But a player like Chavvy (Ellie may not have enough of the gift of gab…this is where Swish could’ve shined…sigh) mght be able to explain some of the more charming areas of the Bay area to Furcal and feeling he is going to be playing with friendly guys might make the team seem a little less unattractive to Raffy.

I'm skeptical about the "charming areas of the Bay area" thing. People have tried to recruit

me to live there doing that, and it never worked. I think with places, you either like them or you don’t. It’s not something that people can sell you on, if you’ve already formed an opinion. Actually I might have had more of an open mind if people hadn’t tried to sell me inadvertently using arguments that reinforced my prior negative opinions.

And you can't recall any charming parts?

Angel Hernandez, is that you?

I became an A's fan, after having rooted for the Cardinals

during my childhood. That was charming.

On the whole it was pleasant enough. It just wasn’t compatible with my culture. I’m a midwestern guy.

Food comparison:

Pizza – draw — I liked Red Boy in Marin
Dim Sum – SF
Vietnamese – Oakland
Thai – Anywhere in California
Italian – draw
Seafood – SF

Not really much of a contest is it?
