Sickels Top 20+ A's prospects 2009
Oddly enough, Ben Copeland doesn't make the list.
B+ Category
Cahill
Anderson
B Category
Cunningham
Gonzalez
Cardenas
Carter
Weeks
Doolittle
B- Category
Inoa
Mazzaro
Simmons
Rodriguez
Outman
Hunter
Carignan
Follow that with 11 players rated as C+ and the A's have a very deep system. I'm of the opinion that one of Cahill/Anderson should be an A- and Sickels himself said both pitchers are borderline canidates for an A- and that he chose to grade conservatively. My choice would be Anderson but it's his list so....
Just for comparison's sake, I'll re-post BA's Top 10.
| 1. | Brett Anderson, lhp |
| 2. | Trevor Cahill, rhp |
| 3. | Michael Inoa, rhp |
| 4. | Aaron Cunningham, of |
| 5. | Adrian Cardenas, 2b/ss |
| 6. | Chris Carter, 1b/3b/of |
| 7. | Gio Gonzalez, lhp |
| 8. | Vin Mazzaro, rhp |
| 9. | Jemile Weeks, 2b |
| 10. | James Simmons, rhp |

She was rather outstanding in the first half of V for Vendetta
Then she gets her head shaved, which, while necessary to the plot, definitely sucks for the viewers.
Are you conceptually opposed to Keira Knightley too? They look very similar.

This could be the most accurate and insightful post I’ve ever read from you. And that’s not saying you don’t know your baseball, but I totally agree with you on Knightley. She’s another Hollywood “hottie” who I wouldn’t touch.
I do think Natalie Portman is fine as an actress, though I think her “hotness” comes from a bunch of Star Wars nerds going ape over her in the newer movies. A girl with a pulse is hot to them if she’s in Star Wars.

Balderdash
This reminds me of those threads where people are supposed to list the last ten songs on their iPod shuffle, and pretty soon the thing is overflowing with painstakingly arranged ten tune Odes to Me that ooze “look how unique and fascinating and esoteric I am”-ness.
See, this beautiful Hollywood actress just doesn’t do it for me because she was in a series of well-received but insufficiently under the radar movies, plus she has this, you know, sensibility or something that isn’t awesome enough for my tastes, whereas I really dig this other impossibly beautiful actress who was in a Godard film because, well, I want everyone to know I watch Godard films.
Uh huh.
They’re all hot. If you saw any of them on the street, you’d turn your head. If any of them approached you in a bar/club/baseball stadium/whatever, they’d have your undivided attention, after which you’d have to set aside some quality time with yourself, a la Vincent Vega.
If Charlize Theron or Jennifer Connelly or Natalie Portman a) were less famous, or b) had appeared in one of those absurd Gus Van Sandt indulgences where nobody talks and mop-haired teenagers gaze meaningfully into the camera for 90 minutes, I’d bet you’d be explaining to us how they’re just your type.
Also, if you persist in this silly, ill-considered Wire bashing (I half-watched Season 1 while skimming Eschaton and posting song parodies about floating stadiums … overrated!), I’m going to demand a refund of my 2009 AN subscription deposit.

Re: Beautiful Hollywood Actress Bashing
It’s not that people here would never date Keira Knightley or Jennifer Connelly, but rather that, if given a choice, they prefer another actress. Making the argument that people would jump at the chance to even talk to Knightley is like trying to argue that Juan Pierre is a good baseball player because we would choose him first in our adult softball leagues. The standard for comparison should be against their peers, not the average person.

That is undoubtedly true, but I think monkeyball and thejd44 missed the memo:
Janet Reno, hotter than Natalie Portman
Wouldn’t touch Keira Knightley
Angelina Jolie not even a little bit attractive
Etc.
Also, the tone of Jennifer-Connelly-isn’t-good-enough-for-me dismissiveness, which always swells to farcical proportions in these sorts of discussions.
Postcript:

So, from which of these precepts do you base your ire:
- Allagawdscrechurs iz beeyootifull
- It’s heteronormativeantisubalternquasiimperialist to make judgments about another’s appearance
- All Hollywood actresses are brazen hussies/mechanical icons whose facticity and plasticity are only designed to lull us into false consciousness
- The market has spoken, and actresses cast in top box-office hits are by definition the most attractive
- Personal taste has no role in the workers’ paradise of AN

Fact: My stabs at droll repartee have fallen flat like 96 times in a row in this thread.
Conclusion: I am not any good at droll repartee.
Action Plan:
1] Cease droll repartee immediately.
2] Tackle something less challenging, like pondering consciousness or trying not to shoot the puppy.
3] Buy $300 worth of canned food, quit my job, lock my door, spend several weeks immersed in Cots, Fangraphs, THT, and that Book site everyone is always referencing. No showers. No sleep. Lots of cognitive enhancers. Eye of the Tiger playing in the background the whole time.
4] Learn more math.
5] Re-emerge on AN with a new screen name and a new attitude. Cite obscure opt out clauses. Toss wOBA around like it was nothing. Employ plus/minus terminology. Argue with PT about 19 year-old Mexican League prospects. Etc.

I dunno, I think it makes more sense than you’re giving it credit for. Most relationships are (by necessity, if nothing else) built on more than physical attractiveness, and despite the rampant insecurity of thejd’s girlfriend on the issue, that’s generally a good thing.
Given that these actresses have nothing to do with reality (they’re essentially casual sex fantasies), you might as well pick one who matches your search image… although, I grant you, there’s enough normative looking-down-nose-ism that someone whose search image is Queen Latifah isn’t likely to blab about it here.

Generally speaking, I agree that the comments are relative to other actresses
But I don’t find Keira Knightley or Angelina Jolie attractive. At all. I have friends hotter than both of them. Knightley is just too blah skinny (and I couldn’t stand to hear her talk). Jolie has a nice body, but her face is, like, a 3. She’s not at all pretty even compared to the non-famous hot girl. Her lips gross me out, and while I can tolerate a couple tattoos, but too many really lowers the quality of someone’s looks.

Yes
I can only speak for myself of course, but as I sit here in my parent’s basement, my Spiderman underoos in a tangle around my ankles, unshaven, pooping, scratching myself, calculating DIPS and FIP and VORP and WARP in my head, pondering fierce arguments among pseudonymous baseball bloggers about hypothetical contract negotiations, shifting my wistful gaze from the tea green shower curtains to the stack of dog-eared Maxims on the floor to the still-boxed Silent Bob figurines arranged carefully along the window sill, I’m amused at how far people are willing to take this “unimpressed by generic beauty” charade.
Don’t you see, PT? Keira Knightley is so bland. If only she’d been in a really awesome limited release film noir or something, I could project style and wit and artistic insight onto her persona, making it easier to fantasize about how if we met someday, she’d really get me, not like those factory-formed Hollywood types who are just famous adult versions of girls who never knew my name in high school, no, not her, she’d be different … we’d have serious conversations about Kant and stuff, trade paperback novels, talk into the night, and yes, fall in love, but not in a lame, squishy, on the nose, Nora Ephron kind of way, and we wouldn’t live happily ever after either, because complicated people like us battle, we lust after raw experience, we drink and argue and philander like Picasso and Hemingway, we scrap and curse and sleep with other beautiful but well-read women … but in the end we’d be together, her the Beauvoir to my Sartre, the Nin to my Miller, the Anniston to my Gyllenhal, triumphantly astride the great wave of history. Or something.

And yet she actually may not be the hottest person on Grey’s Anatomy anymore. The show may be going down like the Titanic, but damned if they aren’t keeping the vending machines well stocked with eye candy in the meantime.

I figured on the demise of the show after season four
when seemingly every possible romantic coupling among the major characters had already either taken place or somehow become impossible, but they solved that dilemma by adding about 10 new ones.
Thanks to the power of combinatorics, the potential hookups are literally unlimited!

Although I just watched Burn After Reading from a pirate site, so I’m pretty ambivalent about it all.

no link?
and here are 16 – 40:
16) Corey Brown, OF, Grade C+: Huge upside, but strikeout issues are a problem.
17) Andrew Bailey, RHP, Grade C+: I still like him. Could help very soon in the bullpen.
18) Tyson Ross, RHP, Grade C+: I think he’s an injury risk, but the upside is here.
19) John Donaldson, C, Grade C+: I think he’ll hit, but the glove looks like a problem.
20) Fautino De Los Santos, RHP, Grade C+: Enormous upside, but have to see how things look after Tommy John. I’m conservative about that.
21) Sam Demel, RHP, Grade C+: Love the strikeouts, command could wobble in Double-A.
22) Rashun Dixon, OF, Grade C+: Another enormous upside guy with question marks.
23) Jason Christian, SS, Grade C+: I thought he was a steal in the draft. Worried some about strikeout rate, like tools and other skills.
24) Arnold Leon, RHP, Grade C+: Yet another interesting relief arm. Could rank higher.
25) Jesus Guzman, 3B, Grade C+: Nice pickup as a minor league free agent. Still young enough to be interesting sleeper.
26) Petey Paramore, C, Grade C+: Great glove, lots of walks, doubts about rest of bat.
Others: Jeremy Barfield, OF; Dusty Coleman, SS; Pedro Figueroa, LHP; Craig Italiano, RHP; Jared Lansford, RHP; Nino Leyja, SS; Cliff Pennington, SS; Landon Powell, C; Danny Putnam, OF; Anthony Recker, C; Matt Spencer, OF; Matt Sulentic, OF; Daniel Thomas, RHP.

2007 Oakland Athletics Prospects
1. Travis Buck, OF, Grade B+ (Ethier comparison looks valid to me)
2. Daric Barton, 1B, B (hurt by injury, but what about his power and defense?)
3. Matt Sulentic, OF, B (I really, really believe in his bat)
4. Jermaine Mitchell, OF, B- (good tools, speed, developing skills)
5. Kurt Suzuki, C, B- (a personal favorite)
6. Kevin Melillo, 2B, B- (I overrated him last year but I still think he will be a useful player)
7. Trevor Cahill, RHP, B- (Raw but projectable and promising)
8. Javier Herrera, OF, C+ (Injury casualty, great tools but skills?
9. Marcus McBeth, RHP, C+ (Needs a bit more polish but quite intriguing)
10. Jason Windsor, RHP, C+ (needs a bit more fastball but quite intriguing)
11. Jeff Baisley, 3B, C+ (will jump to Double-A in ‘07 and we’ll find out if he is for real. I personally think he is)
12. Ryan Goleski, OF, C+ (assuming his wrist is OK)

Mark Ellis is a (minimum) 2 WAR player.
I get those right?

Mark Ellis is more like a 3.5 WAR player
but yes, that certainly would be greater than or equal to 2 WAR…
I’ve seen different numbers for the money, but it’s always somewhere in that range.

Thanks
I’ve seen up to $5 million per WAR via FA but $4 million makes my point.

I think that number is going to drop anyway
Seems like the economy is causing some issues with the assumed inflation of baseball contracts. It’s hard to really say in advance (according to Tango), but that $4.5-$5 mil number might actually end up at $4 mil per win.

It really shows how much the farm system has turned around.
When you consider that people like Mitchell, Melillo, McBeth, Windsor, Baisley, and Goleski were borderline prospects to begin with.
If they were on the A’s list today I doubt any of them would break the top 15.
Sometimes life will strike you out on a curve ball and the only choice you have is to flip off the umpire and walk to first base anyway.

Windsor was a fine prospect until he wrecked his shoulder
I’d have no problem putting pre-2007 Windsor in my top 15.

Time to train the female side of the partnership
Repeat after me: “It does not matter where you get your appetite so long as you come home for your meals.”
If that seems too direct try: “While there are women in this world who are better looking than even you are, I choose to be with you.”

I thought popular-celebs-who-I-don't-find-attractive
was the designated topic. We discuss the ones we do find hot often enough, and we could do so again if you like.
My favorites are Diane Lane and Ashley Judd. Of the names mentioned in this thread I like Katherine Heigl, Charlize Theron, Kate Beckinsale, and Angelina Jolie. Others frequently mentioned on AN whom I like are Alyssa Milano, Jennifer Lopez and Jessica Alba. I don’t find Scartlett Johansson un-hot — she looks quite nice, too — I just don’t understand why she’s so often elevated above so many others as the number one.

Pat Forde, of ESPN's college sports division, has a recurring Ashley Judd crush
He’s also one of their better writers, although if you don’t like college football, college hoops or horse racing, you’re a bit out of luck on that one.
Apparently she’s a huge Kentucky basketball fan.

Judd graduated from UK
She goes to as many regular season games as she can, though not as many in recent years. She’s also there to watch the game, not to be seen as evidenced by her sticking around for the whole game during the butt-kicking UK received at Vandy last season and UNC this year. Anybody who sat through those debacles is a true fan.

AN flaw
grover, I added this to the front page just a minute ago, noting that your fanpost far more relevant than what I wrote this morning. But I guess the system automatically put it below mine because of the time the two were written, and I can’t fix it.
It should be that when a diary is “promoted”, it’s immediately put on top – that’s obviously the reason for bringing a diary to the front page.

Texas and Oakland are generally considered the top 2 in MLB.
The Rays have graduated some of their best guys of late, so they are (probably?) third, a tick below us in the prospect ratings. Obviously their “25 and under” talent, combining both the big club and the farm, is still phenomenal.

Probably #2
Seems like the consensus is that Texas has a better system.
Anybody else absolutely giddy over the idea of Oakland and Texas battling for the AL West for a handful of years while the Angels (hopefully) are winning 60 games and their fans are jumping out of windows of very tall buildings?

Oakland is extremely pitching heavy whereas Texas has a good balance.
I think it comes down to the fact that most of our position players have some big questions. Can Carter do anything than DH, can Doolittle put the power and patience together, will Cardenas’ power ever come? Etc.
