New FA Target? - 3B Dayan Viciedo
Seen as the future "Babe Ruth of Cuba" until he defected, Dayan Viciedo has been cleared by MLB to be a free agent. Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times has the White Sox ready to snap up the third-base prospect, who is still just 19.mlbtraderumors.com
With the A's saying they will be spending more money on the international market, I do not see how the A's can pass up an opertunity to bid on this guy. First Round Talent, Plays 3B which is a position of dire need for the A's (our top minor league prospect at the position is Chris Carter, who projects to either be a 1B or DH).
We're a team that is rebuilding, we need these types of players. If we can go after Inoa, why not a position player?

Completly agree ...
Sign him to a 5yr deal. 1st yr or so he will be in the minors but should move quickly and he can be around when the pitchers hit there stride.
Huge power and to boot plays the 1 position we lack in.

Miami-based agent who represents a number of Cuban players
among them José Contreras and Alexei Ramirez.
Is he the one who was the subject of the Michael Lewis piece?
[BTW, if you haven’t read it, your life is not complete. It’s at Slate; I think the title was “Commieball.”
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
the agent in Lewis' piece is Guy Dominguez
and by the way, Fidel Castro did pitch for his Belén College team in the 1940’s. However, there’s no evidence that the NY Giants was interested in signing him.
Looks like the Sox have the inside track
considering he has fellow countrymen on the team.
Built like a linebacker.
Open up the check book Lew!!!!
I'd rather have this guy than Giambi or Furcal

That would be ballsy but, I think, illegal in the state of California...

If the California Supreme Court overturns what the voters decided, the US Supreme Court will most likely outlaw gay marriage preempting the states.

Preventing us from signing Viciedo?
Bummer.

Yea it sucks.
I think Scalia is an Angels fan, clearly.

So the A's have to move to Portland temporarily?

I find that law kind of funny
because wouldn’t it basically mean all marriages (a binding legal contract between two people for the most part, as well as whatever additional meanings you might give it) is void after the 7th year?

Only if you characterize a marriage as a "personal services contract"
I was under the impression that we had moved past that as a society…

I thought when I raised this point re: Tex at some point
We ended up learning that the MLB collective bargaining agreement bargains around that limitation (which was only ever really designed to prevent studios from locking of actors at sub-market rates).

It's just more proof that we, as a society, NEED to
narrowly define “marriage” as a union between a man and a baseball team. Or a goat.

Think of the children!
No, seriously. Poor little boys with bats for legs and baseballs for… um… err… eyes? Though, the goat boy would be kind of cool.

Make it a goat tranny and I'm literally drooling
OK let’s face it, I’ve been drooling all morning anyway so the correlation is suspect.

So I did some research...
The scouting reports that say this kid can play 3B are 3 years old. The latest stuff pretty much pegs him as a 1B.
’Course, all this stuff is sketchy at best.
The monster at the end of this blog.
BA agrees
“His body could go the same route as Livan Hernandez, and when I saw him in Mexico, he wasn’t very good at third base anymore,” one international scouting director said. “But he can really hit; in fact, I think he’s probably a better hitter than Villalona.”
Villolona received a $2.1 million bonus from the Giants in 2006 and is currently playing for low Class A Augusta.
Another scout who had seen Viciedo was less enthused about him as a player, pegging him as a first baseman-only hitter with a bad body. “You know everybody liked Kendry Morales,” the scout said, referring to the Angels’ Cuban DH/first baseman, “and he had some other tools. But his body’s gone south and he’s pretty much just a DH. So I think it’s premature to get too excited about this guy.”

"the same route as Livan Hernandez"?
I think that requires a deep-sea shipping channel. They’ll have to bring him in under the Bay and GG bridges at low tide, like the Port of Oakland cranes.
Did you overpay for those eggs? @('.')@
I still say sign him
and buy him a treadmill as part of his signing bonus

Joe Blanton hit more home runs than the entire A's team
this October.
They're called RUNS for a reason.
Amidst all the
“SIGN HIM BILLY!!!!!!” fervor, I think people are glossing over the very important fact that it doesn’t look like this kid can stick at third. Maybe he can be a slugging first baseman, or maybe he’s Kendry Morales. One thing he ain’t, though, is the next Eric Chavez.
Not that I’m necessarily against signing him, but with Carter/Doolittle/Barton/et al to still sift through, I’d probably rather see our resources used on an actual third baseman.
RagingHarden: Yeah if you get 20 starts out of me I'll be shocked. Like, I'll wreck my drawers.
last offseason
A’s were one of the interested teams in alexei ramirez when their cf/2b situation long term was unknown…he ended up signing for 4 yr/4.75 +3.25 incentives
at most 4 yr/8mill they paid up ..turns out a decent bargain
i’m not sure what this 3b is looking for who some mentioned his bat could even better than villalona
or maybe similar to kendry morales signed with angels at the time 6 yr deal…3mill up front
i’d take my chances signing this 3b, than finding another embree at the same price
Ramirez was 26 and major league ready
This kid is going to take a little while to be ready.

I like the idea of signing him
for the simple reason that the A’s need to get as many good, potential All Star hitting prospects into their system as they can. Any time they have a chance to acquire a decent prospect, they should seriously examine the possiblity. I have no idea what is an appropriate price to pay, or whether he continues to project well. But if he looks good, making an offer seems necessary. Even if he won’t be ready for four years.
They're called RUNS for a reason.
