Dan Meyer's Career as An Oakland Athletic Comes to a Close

Dan Meyer, the main piece of the Tim Hudson deal with Atlanta, is officially no longer property of the Oakland Athletics

He was claimed by the Florida Marlins.  In many ways, it's hugely disappointing because I still think that the deal with the Braves would've been a very good deal had Meyer stayed healthy and not injured himself weight lifting.  Course with hindsight now, people could say that the Braves deal is probably the worst deal that Billy Beane has made during his time in Oakland.  I mean, I'm pretty sure that Beane didn't really think that Juan Cruz and Charles Thomas would amount to anything.  Meyer was always the big centerpiece of that deal.  You could argue that he should've gotten more at the time, but I was always very excited to see Meyer in an A's uniform giving the fact that he was amongst the top rated minor league pitchers in all of baseball when the A's acquired him.  Had he not gotten injured, who knows what could've been?

Then again, that's what sports are all about.  Best of luck, Dan.  I hope you find that magic again in South Florida.

25 yr old lefties coming off 4.14 ERA’s are super easy to find. They’re also not much better than 27 yr old lefties with 7.48 ERA’s

Once apon a time

Meyer was projected to be #2 type starter with Haren in 2005. Joe Blanton being just a 5th starter.

Just goes to show how injuries can derail a career, hopefully a change of scenery and health can get his promising career back on track.

Also the “other” rumor was Edwin Jackson & Antonio Perez for Huddy so neither trade would have netted the returns Mulder got.

by Bud Light on Nov 4, 2008 5:26 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Even in retrospect, I'd want Meyer over Jackson

Jackson is really a very bad pitcher, and he hasn’t had a horrible injury that turned him into a bad pitcher. I have no doubt that Meyer would be a better pitcher right now if he had stayed healthy.

Juan Cruz was eventually traded for Brad Halsey

who was good in AAA, and not so good in the MLB. Also, Charles Thomas was traded for J.D. Closser, who had once looked like a decent prospect. I think this trade was, more than anything, unlucky. At the time it was a good trade, and if I was Billy, I’d do it again (well not NOW, but back in the day).

It's too bad

But I do argue the premise that Juan Cruz and Two Buck Chuck were worthless. Cruz was supposed to be a Kiko Calero, a solid set up man (which he has now become with AZ) while Thomas was supposed to be a great defensive, OK bat CFer (like a mix of Raj Davis and Ryan Sweeney). Meyer was of course the key to the deal.

One of Beane’s biggest weaknesses is that he tries to quickly to either recover from his mistakes or try too quickly to repeat his successes. The Billy Taylor trade was a great trade, as it got us Izzy. The Hinske trade got us Koch (who was very, very lucky with us). Beane now believed these successes were easy to accomplish and that closers were fungible. He traded Koch for Foulke. This of course merely reinforced his belief. Beane tried to sign Foulke (as one of the top 5 best in the game is valuable at any position) after ‘03. But, Rhodes, while not the best alternative (Gordon had already signed), was an OK alternative in Beane’s POV and a 3 year deal was a great value. But we all knew how that worked out. Beane had relied too much on past success and committed too much risk to it.

2004 the bullpen failed us. Beane basically had to acquire Dotel out of necessity. And so, Beane went from the relief pitchers can be acquired from anywhere and any good arm could be a closer to a need to find bullpen pitchers. It was his insistence on one bullpen arm and one young starter that gave us both the Hudson and Mulder deals. Obviously the Mulder deal worked perfectly. But the Huddy deal was not as good. Juan Cruz was not a shut-down arm. And in needing two solid pitchers one SP and one relief, Beane eliminated possible competition in the bidding, such as the O’s and Mets. Remarkably, the Phillies and Dodgers both had the bullpen pieces to get a deal done (and LA had the young pitching as well). Beane hurt the possible deals he could have gotten for Huddy/Mulder by trying too hard to fix past failures.

A couple other examples of Beane trying to replicate successes or over-fix past failures were the Piazza signing (following Thomas’ success) and the Stewart/Brown signings (following Payton’s success). Now obviously Beane’s strengths (great ability to find/trade for cheap players who play above averagely- Durazo, Cust, Ellis; good trade record) outweigh his weaknesses (the issue above, signing large contracts, sticking with a player too long) but I wanted to get that off my chest.

Except... none of this is true

Beane’s original deal, as reported by a couple different sources including stuff from Atlanta, was that Beane originally asked for Meyer and Marcus Giles for Huddy. It was only after Bobby Cox called Schuerholz begging his GM not to trade his 2nd baseman did Thomas and Cruz really enter the picture.

To be perfectly honest, I am a little fuzzy on when Cruz became a part of the deal.

Right

Marcus Giles was our replacement at 2b. This is the year we traded for Keith Ginter and were expecting a three way competition with Ellis, Ginter, and Scutaro. Our two biggest problems the previous year were Scoot’s Feliz-like OBP at 2b (which he improved in ’05) and our pen. Giles was a very, very solid piece (probably with about the same value Kelly Johnson has now). Beane did not go from one good young pitcher and one of the best 2b is the game to one good young pitcher and two throw-ins. Beane felt Cruz and Thomas were a step down from Giles, not a staircase down.

I'll dig up the link if I can find it

In the mean time, Beane thought that Thomas was a starting caliber outfielder with 6 years of service time ’til free agency. He erred in that assesment.

marcus giles

his post-2005 career was not exactly stellar either.
06: 87 OPS+
07: 68 OPS+
08: out of baseball?

the other player being mentioned was kyle davies, who has a career ERA+ of 77.
basically the lesson here is don’t trade with the braves unless you’re getting joey devine for mark kotsay.
