"A's Caravan" Info That Might Interest Local Fans
Just a quick "between posts post" until the next one appears. Local fans might be interested in the upcoming "A's Caravan," which is rolling through Bay Area communities next Wednesday-Sunday, connecting with fans and adding star-muscle to a couple of holiday charity drives.
Are there folks on AN who have participated in the A's Caravan in past years, and if so what can you report about it? Any insights would be appreciated, as the caravan has never passed through my house, a prison, a barnyard or a sleazy tavern, and as a result I have never seen it in action.

First year of this??
I believe that this is the first year of this “caravan.” I don’t remember anything like this last year or in years past. At least the A’s are trying something new to market themselves. And it also looks like this caravan event is geographically all over the Bay Area (SF, Walnut Creek, Fremont, Pleasanton, San Jose.) This can only be good…

Yet it avoids Oakland...

I don't remember this taking place before
although that doesn’t mean it hasn’t.
I live and work in Oakland, and don’t have time to go hunting for the caravan elsewhere.

You would think they'd at least schedule something for Jack London Square...
but nothing in Oakland??? :(

The FanFest will be in Oakland
I liked the FanFest when it was held at Jack London Square. I went to the first one at the Coliseum and I haven’t been back. It’s too cramped and chaotic. I wish they’d move it back.
Root for the Giants? Not even if they're playing al-Qaeda!

ok so here's a chance
for the A’s to reach out to “local” fans, make some connections with kids who’ll become fans of the team for life… and they don’t even schedule an even in their host city.
Why don’t they just take the goddamn name off the front of the road jerseys now? This A’s management team is f*#$%g unbelievable.

interesting that
they’re able to do events outisde their normal cachement area (and inside the giants’).
maybe Good Deeds doesn’t count as marketing.
this is the most boring comment ever.
i might see i can get to the san francisco one and check it out, though, yknow, i do have work at that time

You know, Jennifer was in Iowa for Thanksgiving.
I hope Baby Sweeney isn’t too tired to chat…

From Merriam-Webster:
caravan (’ker-ə-ˌvan)
1 a: a company of travelers on a journey through desert or hostile regions
In marketing, something that ventures outside the narrow confines of its home area — since people in its home area are familiar with it (and in the case of a baseball team, have almost-daily exposure and access to it for half the year, whether they choose to take advantage of that easy access or not).
Do we want the A’s to expand their regional fan base as much as possible, which could lead to better TV and radio contracts and maybe even lead to them staying in the Bay Area, or do we want them to concentrate their marketing activities and “outreach” only in Oakland because that’s their home?
Fremont and San Jose aren’t the moon, for fuck’s sake, and San Francisco even less so. Nearly all of the A’s player appearances during the season take place in Oakland and other parts of the East Bay, so what’s the problem with an off-season caravan?

Yeah, and
maybe there are no “breakfast with mrs. santa claus” or other appropriate events in oakland next week!!

They could at least schedule one appearance in the desert, though
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal

That appearance will be six weeks or so, starting in mid-February.

Woo!! I'm local!!
and I’m going to go to one of their little charity things. and I’ll be at the chat too, if the server doesn’t crash from the onslaught of fans. Sorta wish that Ellis was doing it, but beggars can’t be choosers…

The Freakin' Caravan will hit Oakland January 24th, 2009
Fanfest, per the A’s office.

Does anybody know if we have to pay for the autograph session
On the 7th? I REALLY don’t want to pay, unless it’s for charity.
