Around SBN: Jim Irsay: We Can Make It Work With Peyton Manning

OT: High Profile Jouranlist Swings at ESPN

Many of us have lamented over the lack of "coverage" that our teams get on ESPN.  Fair and Balanced?  Ah, no.  We have cursed at our T.V.'s, directed at Steve Philips and John Kruk because of their uneducated, ass kissing, and boring commentary.

Joe Morgan?  Enough said.

We have complained that the MLB coverage is basically, Yankees vs. Red Sox, with a splash of Mets, Braves, and Cardinals coverage.

Mr. Whitlock touches on the lack of coverage that Ball State football has gotten as well as, the short-sightedness of the most recent Heisman voting, among other topics.

While Mr. Whitlock doesn't talk about MLB much, the read was interesting and one of the first that I have read that calls out ESPN and it's "coverage".  BTW, as many of you know, Mr. Whitlock worked at ESPN for many years, and yes he was fired from that job.

Hey, why not make this the DLD?

All he’s gotta do is add a couple letters and numbers to the title.

I, for one, never look at fanshots ...

I suspect that’s fairly normal …

He wrote enough that this is totally legit as a diary. It’s not like there are a rush of diaries these days …

Your mom?

I’m 33 years old, and this is the 1st time I’ve ever heard that someone’s mom got caught up watching football and disrupted the family’s plans.

I could have done without seeing any of THIS season

Well, actually, I did do without it. My heart isn’t bleeding, though…

It’d be nice if someone persuaded Caltech to have a football team, so we could get an extra free win every year…

I actually AM a member of the Pomona community. Whereas I’m not a member of the A’s shareholders.

Believe me, my willingness to use the word there was entirely conscious.

always said the same thing about Caltech, coming from MIT

‘cept you’d have to change “an extra free win” to “a win”.

It would have sucked going to Cal Tech ...

I would have been the star of the swimming team and I could have started for their basketball team (despite being 5’10 with big man skills) … I never saw them play, but I’d imagine I could have played soccer for them too … and I would have gone my entire college career without a single win … that would have been really, really horrible …

Fair enough

Perhaps I’ve spent too much time at Sactown Royalty, where any possible misuse of the fanpost/fanshot system draws an attack.

I figured someone would say something, so I wanted to get it over with and be cordial. In hindsight, it probably wasn’t necessary. But I still wouldn’t mind if this became a DLD.

why was whitlock fired when he’s just as bad as everyone else on ESPN?

The main problem with Whitlock, is everything that happens has to have a racial

overtone. If it isn’t racial, it is like this one, he went to Ball State, so he NEEDS to hear more about them.

by theblackpearl on Nov 28, 2008 7:57 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, but it doesn’t mean he is wrong about ESPN and their terribleness.

by chri5 on Nov 28, 2008 9:21 AM PST up reply actions

blackpearl, I don't think your statement's entirely fair ...

One of the things I find refreshing about Whitlock is that he admits his bias going in … in just about every article I’ve ever read of his, he makes clear the preconceptions he has — right or wrong — before he states his case.
So, to kind of “honor” him in this way, I must admit that I like Whitlock a lot, and find myself agreeing with him more often than not. He does bring the “race card” into play a lot, but it’s often in pointing out why the race card isn’t a factor in a particular story, when others try and make it so. In other words, I’ve read many articles of his in which he calls out an African-American or other minorities as often as he does white athletes. I really appreciate his fair-mindedness — it seems to me that he rarely has a political or racial agenda that he trys to push, other than the fact that politics and race relations should have little to do with sports.
I don’t think Whitlock’s always right, and I don’t always agree with everything he writes, but he’s one of the best out there, in my opinion. And his comments regarding ESPN are dead on. There’s not enough paper in the world to write all of the things wrong with ESPN and its entire operation.

I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway.

by Vacafan on Nov 28, 2008 9:20 AM PST reply actions

I like Whitlock, too.

And it’s funny because the first time I heard of him, it was with something I thought was really, really dumb. I can’t even remember what it was now, but I had a terrible first impression of him. After that, any time I’d hear his name I’d think “oh, this hack again.” Then I’d read or listen to what he had to say and even if I didn’t agree, I didn’t think “what a moron.” Plus, he’s not afraid to call people out when they deserve it.

Plus, he’s a fan of The Wire. That doesn’t hurt.

by 67MARQUEZ on Nov 28, 2008 9:20 AM PST reply actions

Ah, the Jou-ran-list.

It’s a compilation of major Jewish front office executives. Notably in today’s game there are GMs Theo Epstein (Boston) and Mark Shapiro (Cleveland), owners Jerry Reinsdorf (Chicago White Sox) , Fred Wilpon (NY Mets), and our own Lew Wolff (Oakland). Intriguingly, three of the four big sports (yeah, I still count hockey) have Jewish commissioners: David Stern (NBA), Bud Selig (MLB), and Gary Bettman (NHL).

by GoA's on Nov 28, 2008 1:25 PM PST up reply actions

I firmly believe that ESPN

is going to be hurting as more leagues launch networks. It’s hockey season so what am I doing to see hockey highlights? Yeah, watching NHL on the Fly on the NHL Network. I don’t want to deal with all the other BS that ESPN covers. If I’m going want baseball highlights at any time next year, I’m going to be watching the MLB Channel.

I know my brother is a HUGE NFL fan and he basically watches the NFL Network and lives on blogs now. If ESPN hadn’t ponied up for all the telecast rights for the leagues, I believe they’d be in even worse trouble. So it makes sense why they dropped a half a billion on the BCS telecast rights.

NHL on the Fly rules for hockey highlights

In-depth coverage of each game and the highlights are just clips from the games themselves complete with the commentary at the time.

None of that BS commentary over the highlights like ESPN. They let the highlights speak for themselves. I LOVE the format.

Nice article, I guess

I agree that the pumping up of the Big 12 has been tiresome. It probably is the best conference this season, but only by virtue of the fact that the Big East and the ACC suck as usual, a bunch of highly-touted teams in the SEC shit the bed, and the Pac-10 is pretty green at important positions like QB. And a Michigan-less Big 10 has essentially declawed the entire conference in the media’s eyes. Even with all that, the margin between the best and worst conferences isn’t quite so big as ESPN would have you believe.

In general, there has been a helluva lot more parity in college football over the past 2 years. That said, nice little seasons by Ball State and Tulsa don’t impress me, much as Rutgers and Louisville making their adorable runs at the Top 10 a couple of years ago didn’t impress me. They play against inferior talent within their own division, and on top of it, they play East Akron Tech or Central Chattanooga for their out-of-conference games. Meanwhile, the Pac-10 has the most ambitious out-of-conference schedules in the nation, living and dying with every game against Ohio State (USC) or Penn State (Oregon State). Unfortunately, this season they’ve died more often than not.

Not everybody can have OOC Schedules that rival Ohio State

I mean, Youngstown State and Troy in the same season!?? WOW.

by mikev on Nov 28, 2008 1:01 PM PST up reply actions

I'm a little unsure of how to approach this...

If you’re saying that Oregon State playing Ohio State wasn’t a tough OOC game for the Beavers because the Buckeyes don’t play anybody that tough outside of the Big 10, I’d have to disagree.

If you’re making a larger overall statement that bigger programs like Ohio State get the nod even when their OOC schedules aren’t that tough… this is true. Regardless, I’d take Ohio State over TCU, Northwestern, or just about any of those teams that aren’t Top 25 mainstays. Hell, LSU isn’t even ranked and I’d bet they could take out at least 1/3 of the current AP Top 25.

by Joey C. on Nov 29, 2008 11:12 AM PST up reply actions

Wrong.

They play Northeastern (well, Ball State does at least).

Northeastern’s far worse than anything Central Chattanooga can dream up.

RagingHarden: Yeah if you get 20 starts out of me I'll be shocked. Like, I'll wreck my drawers.
