Giants Pull a Fast One on MLB! Players fooled! Sabean in disarray! Agents shocked!
Link: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/11/giants-sign-edg.html
San Francisco Giants sign Edgar Renteria to a 2 year deal worth $18mm.
So, Furcal's other most likely suitor is out of the picture, what does this mean to the A's? Giants had to give up a 2nd round pick for Renteria... What do you think this mean for the market? Does this change the price at all?
Your thoughts, comments, questions...
UPDATE:
Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle talked to a Giants source who said the below report is not true. Schulman admits the Giants may be splitting hairs, as they might deny a deal if only formalities remained.
Rafael Furcal's agent Paul Kinzer says he's still talking to the Giants, which would seem to indicate a Renteria deal isn't close.

Good news
This one was really nice to hear for two reasons:
1. It eliminates one of the A’s top competitors for Furcal (assuming you are in the Furcal camp). There are still some other possible destinations for him so he is not a lock to be in green and giold next year, but this helps.
2. Probably more important is that you can take Renteria off of the list of available shortstops, which is great. One less guy that BB could have overpaid to be mediocre at best and was probably not worth paying anything to replace Crosby (especially considering we will have to essentially eat Crosby’s salary if traded anyway). Thank you Mr. Sabean.

so now the A's biggest competition for Furcal is the "surprise team"?
I don’t like our chances.

you do realize the Giants have been drafting pretty well recently, right? I mean, look at the 07 draft, they got MadBum, Alderson, Kyle Nicholson, filthy arms holmes, and that aint just a one time thing, last couple drafts have been nice for the giants, yheard

The difference between this thread and the McC thread,
where they’re basically saying “at least it isn’t Furcal”, is amusing.
I don’t really understand what the point of this signing is for the Giants, but I suppose it’s hard not to be competitive in that division.

I assume it works the same as "pp." to mean "pages"
In many languages, a repetition of a word or part of a word can indicate plural— including Hawaiian and Japanese. Although I doubt that’s where the abbreviation came from, somehow.
I just use one “M” myself… of course, I just use one “p” too.

Their apparent willingness to get rid of him makes zero sense to me. I’m not aware of any comparable player who’s even “touchable,” much less “on the block.”

Agreed.
I understand that Peavy is a great pitcher, but anything more coming from the Braves’ side in an Escobar for Peavy straight up deal is ridiculous, unless the piece is a Connor Robertson-esque filler piece.
Or if the Braves are getting Greene, but Greene’s trade value isn’t really high, if existant.
