DLD (11/24/08): Report - Furcal to sign with A's

It looks like the A's might get their man. A healthy Furcal would have a significant impact on the A's offense. Combined with Holliday, this is shaping up to be a great winter for our beloved Athletics. GET IT DONE BB!

According to the LA Times:

The free agent shortstop told El Caribe that he would return from his native Dominican Republic to the United States on Monday to sign a contract –- and judging by what he said, it sounds like he could be joining the Oakland Athletics.

Star-divide

Furcal revealed that he has been offered a four-year, $48-million contract by the A’s that includes incentives that could push its value to more than $50 million.

Furcal said he has also received a substantial offer from the New York Mets, who want him as a second baseman. "The offers made by the Athletics and the Mets of New York are tempting, but we’ll make a decision after I meet with my lawyer because there are various factors that we have to evaluate," he said. "But my general feeling is that every offer that’s been made is important, which is why we want to make a decision that’s well thought out."

A few calculations

Marcel projected wOBA: .336. Let’s call that about league average, so he’s +0 as a hitter. Sean Smith puts him at +2 as a shortstop, so let’s say that he’s +0 as a fielder. He’s a good baserunner, let’s give him +5 for that. So, let’s say he’s +5 over a full season, and throw in 27.5 as a SS replacement level. Assuming he plays in 125 games, that’s 25 runs above replacement, or 2.5 wins.

Free agent going rate is about $4.8 MM per win, so his “true market value” is…$12 MM. Looks like a fair contract if he’s healthy enough for 125 games. The last two years might get ugly, though.

Children, until we have taught them better, will be perfectly happy with a seasonal round of games in which conkers succeeds hopscotch.

If he plays good D, hits league average, and runs the bases well...

I guess the other part of the equation is that

Furcal will take over for a guy who is projected as a replacement level SS. If Furcal is 2.5 WAR, then we’re getting all of that as upgrade.

There’s also the whole lack of prospect at position angle. We really don’t have anyone who looks like they’re going to be a solution at any level right now.

And you're forgetting to subtract Crosby's salary

Since I assume he’ll be moved. And if the A’s eat some of that salary, you don’t subtract it but consider the talent they get in exchange.

This is probably a win, but only if Furcal is healthy.

Rafael Furcal told El Caribe that the A’s have offered him a four-year contract worth $48 million that could reach $50 million including incentives. It’s an interesting offer, as it gives Furcal the length he is desiring in a contract, but the guaranteed money is less in average annual value than the three-year, $39 million contract he played for with the Dodgers. Furcal also said that the New York Mets have offered him a contract. Reportedly, he is returning from the Dominican to weigh the offers with his agent.

Rotoworld:

Rafael Furcal said Sunday that the A’s have offered him a four-year, $48 million contract.
Furcal added that he’s also received an offer from the Mets to play second base and plans to meet with his agent to go over his options. Oakland was thought to be in rebuilding mode while stockpiling young talent, but signing Furcal on the heels of trading for Matt Holliday would signal that the A’s believe the AL West is winnable in 2009.

Any team in need of a (starting?) SS just got an opportunity to aqcuire one for a PTBNL. Maybe, realistically, only a bucket of batting practice baseballs, though. Interesting to look at the other side of the offer...

Seeing that the Mets also made Furcal an offer, I went to check out how that news is being received on Metsblog. Based on the first 100 or so comments on there, it looks like most of the commenters think it’s a bad deal for the Mets, and don’t want Furcal – mainly because they’re worried about his injury history (since they’re coming off a year where their 2B, Castillo, had injury problems) and are concerned that the team isn’t clearing up their pitching problems first.

I just found it myself also. Sounds like it may be more of the year/dollar amount thats untrue versus the A’s not actually offering a contract. I’m sure it’s close either way, as it sounds as though the fact that the A’s made an offer cannot be denied and that is the type of deal I could see them going for.

In fact, Heyman quotes a person familiar with the Mets dealings as saying, "No offer has been made."

your problem was twofold...

At the time, Djibouti was called “The Territory Of The Afars And Issas,”
and the only comedian who could have pulled that one off as a punchline was Andy Kaufman…

Therefore, your problem was not merely the nomenclature, but also not being Andy Kaufman.

When I saw the movie

I thought, “enh, it was OK but the book was soooo much better”. I had read the book when it was new, and I totally loved it.

Earlier this year I reread the book, and realized that the book and the movie actually aren’t that much different. The book is kind of meh, too, but I was younger when I read it, so I guess I enjoyed it more.

It’s also very dated. The book is very very 70s. I’m not sure if that’s more of a problem or less of a problem for those of us who actually remember the 70s. You read and you keep thinking, “omigod, I forgot we were like that back then.” Even though the story is set in imaginary time, you can still totally tell what era it is.

One thing especially chronocentric is the fuss about the other princess having no hair. I don’t remember how the movie was on that, but in the book it was a huge deal. As if having no hair was like the most mortifying thing imaginable. I’ve seen that in other 70s books, too. Hair was a cultural obsession in the 1970s. Now it’s like, yeah, whatever.

Assuming things go well for the developing players, I would start with this

Buck (if Buck does the 2008 thing, this becomes Furcal and Cunningham comes in somewhere)
Cust (mmmm… OBP in the 2 hole)
Chavez (#3 hitter shouldn’t be as good as others in #1-4)
Holliday
Barton (there is literally no one below Barton with any power. Barton has the best shot of slugging .400)
Furcal (to steal bases and get driven in by singles hitters)
Sweeney
Suzuki
Ellis

by thejd44 on Nov 24, 2008 1:22 PM PST up reply actions

2009 projected lineup with assumptions

We better hope this assumption of Furcal comes true but here would be my projection…
1) Furcal- SS
2) Sweeney-CF
3) Holliday-LF
4) Giambi-1B/DH-If were gonna assume Furcal lets assume Giambi for a cheap/short deal
5) Chavez-3B pray for his health
6) Cust-DH
7) Ellis-2B
8) Suzuki-C
9) Buck-LF-Hope he regains the form from 07 when he was leading off at times

Assume we keep Barton and he plays a little first and bats in the sixth to eight hole when he plays. I think that Cust would be most affected IF, thats a big IF the A’s do sign Giambi because I believe that Barton is still going to get some playing time and Giambi is a better hitter than Cust so Cust will suffer and actually ride the bench 75% of the time Barton plays first which would probably be every three games or so…Again projections with two big ifs in the lineup right now. We still have to sign Furcal.

What has anybody heard on potential SP’s being signed?

[Insert my repetitive "please stop mentioning Giambi, he makes no sense at all" post here]

Also, Holliday hitting #3 is silly (#3 is worst spot of the top 4). Cust hitting #6 is way too low.

Is a false statement. Try Giambi was a better hitter than Cust several years ago.

Thoughts...

As I try to take a deep breath and separate the mixed emotions of excitement and happiness. I am lead to the following conclusions, emotional and otherwise…It is all pretty obvious and unscientific.

PRO: I am excited about the idea that we may be acquiring Furcal for approximately ~$12 million a season, give or take. Every million is critical.

CON: I am not excited about the prospect of year 4. I’d much rather have structured a 3 year deal worth ~$13 million a season. However, that probably wouldn’t get it done, and I’d rather 4 years at $12 million than 3 years at, say, $15-16 million.

PRO: We probably won’t have a good SS replacement for AT LEAST 3 years within the system, also there were no good buy-low trade partners.

CON: We will never be able to relax. Every time he steals a base, we will worry that his pinky finger will get stepped on, or some other crap.

PRO: If he doesn’t get injured, SS is locked in for long enough to ensure a decent replacement.

PRO: Assuming Furcal is in fact signed, the A’s lineup is, for now, unquestionably superior to the Angels lineup.

Lineup Projection:
Furcal – Lets be realistic
Cust – Should hit before Holliday, takes pitches for the Furcal (rare) SB attempts.
Holliday – Yes, plz
Giambi – I’ll pay $8million to hedge my bets and stop the Barton clock until we are sure.
Chavez – Innocent until proven guilty….sigh
Suzuki – contact from the right-side
Buck – Assuming good Spring Training
Sweeney – See Buck
Ellis – Round-2 lead-off hitter…gritty veteran presence!

on a one year deal only

by stranahanahan on Nov 24, 2008 11:54 AM PST up reply actions

What doesn't make sense?

He’s 39, going to be in a pitchers park, can’t play defense, and it’s questionable whether or not the offensive increase over Barton is worth the defensive hit and $10MM.

Of course, that assumes that Barton gets better.

by mikev on Nov 24, 2008 11:55 AM PST up reply actions

No. He doesn't.

1. He blocks Barton. Barton is likely to be better than he was last year, and is on the upward slope of his career. Remember that a year ago he was our best prospect and that he has had some success in MLB.

2. He costs a lot of money, and requires a multi-year deal. Barton is substantially free.

3. He is 38 years old, and has seen a steady downward trend in his stats. I’d be surprised if he posts an OPS+ over 120.

4. He can’t play defense. I think there’s a good chance Barton posts a 120 OPS+ too, but if you consider the runs Giambi’s glove gives up, Barton doesn’t need to do too much better than last year’s 85 OPS+ to provide equivalent value.

5. The Home Runs will drop off both because of aging and a move to Oakland.

Response

1. Blocks Barton? He allows us to retain Barton for longer…when Barton is more likely to be peaking….

2. Multi-year deal? You know this how? I would definitely be against that if substantiated. If it is a 1-year deal though, the money shouldnt matter to you at all.

3. If he doesn’t produce we still have Barton…

4. Again, if he doesn’t produce we still have Barton…

5. See points 3 and 4.

by ChadGod on Nov 24, 2008 11:59 AM PST up reply actions

Do you think Barton will be better in 2009 than he was in 2008?

Along with that, do you think Giambi will be worse?

I’d say both of those are pretty likely to be true.

Couple that with the fact that Giambi is likely to be significantly worse on defense, probably costing around 1 to 1.5 wins compared to Barton (Barton projects as +4, Giambi as -8). To me, that means that Giambi would need to be about 3 or 4 wins better than Barton with the bat next year to be worth giving a $10M deal, or 2/18, or whatever it’s proposed to be.

I just don’t see that happening.

by mikev on Nov 24, 2008 12:07 PM PST up reply actions

Oops.. forgot to add

I’d rather see that 8-10M spent on Randy Johnson, or Derek Lowe, or Brad Penny on an incentive based deal.

Those guys have a MUCH higher chance of being 2 wins better than whoever is penciled in as the 4th or 5th starter.

by mikev on Nov 24, 2008 12:08 PM PST up reply actions

My positions...

I think my underlying critical belief is that I don’t want to see the A’s make a multi-year commitment on any of the pitchers available. If D-Loweballs is cheap and can be had for 2 years that is the possible exception, but RJ…you’ve got to be kidding me. Let the youth improve and gain experience for ’10, they will still probably be as good or better as RJ in ’09.

So, I realize that is a large assumption, but if one does assume that the pitching market is not a good investment…I think a 1-year deal on Giambi is likely to add value to the A’s.
IF Barton doesn’t improve significantly
IF Giambi doesn’t decline significantly
Lets not forget that even if Barton takes off he adds injury/suck insurance for both Barton and Cust.

Even if everyone is healthy and performing…would it not be marginally valuable to have Giambi as a part-time bench player/late game pinch hitter? NO, that would kick-ass and he would still add value to the club.

So, essentially my point is that under any circumstance he would add value to the team, maybe not a lot, but maybe so, and value nonetheless. So, if you assume the money doesn’t get spent otherwise, might as well spend it in a way that doesn’t negatively impact the future and helps out the current club.

Side-note: Is Giambi a type A free agent? That would certainly factor in, if only slightly.

If not signing Giambi provides no benefit to the A’s besides ownership saving the money, sign him.

If, as is signficantly more likely, it prevents other moves in either the Free Agent market, the international signing market, or overslot drafting, then it makes no sense.

Furcal appears headed to the A’s, Giants or an unidentified third club. The Dodgers are balking at giving him a four-year deal, and so far have made only an inquiry on Renteria.
