Jesus Guzman signs with Giants
"For most of the off-season, it appeared that the Oakland A's were going to be able to re-sign minor league free agent Jesus Guzman, who won the Texas League batting title this season, his first as part of the A's organization. However, at the last minute, the A's cross-town rivals, the San Francisco Giants, got Guzman to sign with them instead. The Giants are looking at a wide open competition at third base next season, and Guzman may have figured that the Giants presented a better big league opportunity than the A's."
There goes one of our Chavez back up plans. Looks like just Baisley/Hannahan remains.

I said this in another post, but
the Giants like former A’s.
let’s send them Crosby as a “gift”, the way we sent them ZIto (or Zito chose them).
I know that's a pisser, baby.
i think what it shows is that
Sabean does his scouting on these blogs.
on a completely unrelated subject, i’d be very disappointed if Bobby Crosby were to be traded. he has been the backbone of the infield. ahem.
BB should send scouts to watch cricket players.

Who influenced Sabean's signing of Zito, btw?
I’m pretty sure everyone on this blog wasn’t gung-ho on Zito in 2006, although I didn’t start reading this blog until recently.
Crosby can’t play defense and doesn’t hit well enough to compensate.
Although he probably is might be better than Pennington/Petit, he’s also more expensive than the two.
I know that's a pisser, baby.

What does an outlandish accent sound like?
Is it anything like Canadian?

Gah!
That’s horrible. Has there been any word why the A’s didn’t think he was worth a spot on the 40 man?

Charlie Brown GO A'S WIN

He was a free agent
I believe the gist of the article is that the A’s wanted to bring him back but he chose to join the Giants because he felt he had a better chanced of making the big leagues this season.
Also, if the A's really want Guzman back they can draft him in Rule 5...
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
if they didn't think enough of him to add him to the 40-man, why would they commit to keeping him on the 25-man for '09?
I also have a pretty high shame threshold. @('.')@
They wouldn't
I’m just saying he’s still there to be had if they have a sudden change of heart.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
They clearly don't think much of him, as we have absolutely nothing
at third and we still let him go.
Stranger things have happened
Also, really, “absolutely nothing at third”? Please. Eric Chavez isn’t actually physically deceased yet. If Mike Hampton and Carl Pavano can come back and actually have productive partial seasons, it’s ludicrous to suggest that the less seriously injured Chavez is a zero on the balance sheet.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Um, yes.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Before only had to keep him on the 40 man roster which they failed to do.
Now would have to keep him on the 25 man roster. Face it, someone did not want to keep him with the organization or to give him a chance at the end of the season to show what he was made of….

Save Rajai Davis
Should you really kick a guy in the tires before signing him?

Sabean scouting
Hello who is Beane looking at now?? Ok I guess its time for the giants to make a offer on that player. Next up will be Giambi.
Visiting Giants fan, aside from looking at Guzman’s stats, anything you guys can tell me about him would be appreciated.

Line drive hitter. Adequate at 3B. Not so much at 2B. Not much plate discipline.
Great at AA. Not so great at AAA.

Sounds like he could start for us at 3B. After the horror that was Jose Castillo, anything is possible.

Guzman has played three seasons at AA.
He hit .258 with an OPS of around .720 in both years. Then the A’s signed him and he put up an OPS of .980.
If you give him enough time to adjust to a league, he’ll destroy it, but chances are he’ll probably not be able to adjust to the Majors, as the pitchers will just adjust to him. He’d never be able to keep up with them. He’s got okay potential in my eyes, but he’s definitely not the answer to the A’s upcoming hole at 3rd.
what the hell...
sure he was terrible in AAA, but he’s a 3B, it was only 15 games, and 24 isn’t that old (chris schroder).

That sucks.
Don’t see why Ryan Webb was such a better investment of a roster spot.
"PECOTA can pretty much kiss my ass."-Nico
Webb turns 23 in Feb. and throws mid-90's gas
After Mazzaro’s 2008 break-out the A’s are probably wondering if something similar could happen with Webb. Ryan gets a decent amount of ground balls (1.51 GO/AO) and doesn’t walk a bunch (3.05 per 9 IP). If he can sharpen up his command a bit more he could blossom quick.
The monster at the end of this blog.
