Help Dave Cameron of USS Mariner and FanGraphs.
Firstly, apologies if this has been previously mentioned here, you guys go through so much stuff it's hard for a non-regular to keep track of.
If not, or if you haven't yet seen any of the various posts around the blogosphere (example), Dave Cameron is a finalist for a $10,000 scholarship based on his online writing. For some reason, the winner is decided by an online poll and right now Dave is in a close second place, with voting ending on Thursday.
If you've seen or read any of Dave's work at USS Mariner, FanGraphs, BP, Hardball Times, etc and appreciate all the time he puts in for basically nothing, please take about five seconds of your time and click here and vote for David Cameron. It's a chance to make a real difference for someone and it comes with the great benefit of costing you nothing but two or three mouse clicks.
Thanks.

And I just know saw that it was posted under a fanShot.
Sorry, we at LL tend to ignore them so I get in the habit of only looking at diaries and front page content.
If any of the editors feel this is a duplicate entry, feel free to delete. (But vote first! [if you want to] )

In addition toe the blog he's nominated for, he's a contributor at DailyKos.
There’s been a huge push to get him votes there.

David Mauro has been spamming diaries on Kos getting
people to vote for him.
He’s also been extremely critical of David Cameron. “Baseball,” apparently, in the words of him and his surrogates, is a useless “bourgeois” pastime. The funny thing is that a few A’s fan Kossacks posted, declaring their hatred of sabermatics and its “taint” on “true” baseball.
I’m guessing they don’t read AN.

I can't tell if basing the final decision for an online-writing-based scholarship on an online poll is utterly brilliant or utterly moronic

In terms of fairness, it's ridiculous.
In terms of pulling in traffic from highly trafficked websites, it’s genius.

no, actually, there's a good fairness argument for it
“OK, so you think you’re a good Intertubes writer? Well, what’s the most true measure of the effectiveness of an Intertubes writer? No, not simple clicks or eyeballs, but click-throughs—i.e., the ability to direct your readership to engage in defined, discrete, quantifiable actions. If you are truly Teh Gratest Intertubes Writer, you will be able to motivate your readers to elevate your poll numbers by the sheer force of your writing skilz.”

that said, I doubt the scholarship people are that smart or cynical

The problem is that the vast majority of people voting for him AREN'T his readers.
They’re people who read Kos and are voting for him based on the two diaries per day that get bumped to the front page.

I guess... that argument doesn't carry a lot of weight with me because it's obvious that most of Cameron's voters aren't USS Mariner people either

It's far more likely that they're familiar with his work, though.
Dave writes at Fangraphs, he wrote for BP and he’s generally quite well known. Mauro writes for a local political blog. No one at Kos would have known who he was if it wasn’t for the constant diary posting.
