Wakamatsu to be new Mariners Skipper

It has been reported by several media outlets here in Seattle that the A's bench coach, Don Watamatsu will be named as the new manager for the Mariners.  Announcement to be made on Wednesday is the current shuttlebutt.  Wakamatsu would be the second bench coach of the A's to get a top spot.

With Macha in Milwaukee, Washington at Texas, and perhaps Wakamatsu in Seattle former A's are catching on as managers.

Take heed, 67MARQUEZ

Imagine the following was written on parchment in fountain pen black, rolled into a scroll, sealed in wax, and delivered to your front door by a breathless courier astride an unruly horse:

Dear 67MARQUEZ,

I compose this missive by the light of a single dwindling candle, and deep in my bones I feel the looming winter chill, portending the onslaught of the Armies of Rosterbation.

I am, alas, only a modest man leading a modest life. I know not the mysteries of Fate, and I am able to grasp but a fleeting echo of the immutable music of the universe.

Nevertheless, I must implore you, amidst the cacaphony of time and space and duplicative fanposts, to complete your Rickey Henderson Anthology with as much haste as you can muster. Now is the time for wise and courageous peoples to stand firm against those bellowing, wicked beasts, cloaked in zeroes and ones and evil intentions, that go by names I dare not utter aloud. ZiPS. Marcel. PECOTA. Grendel.

Godspeed, 67MARQUEZ.

Sincerely,
74mk

Okay, reset.

Imagine a battered blue and white R2 unit shows up at your door. It beeps and burbles and rocks excitedly. You pry its faceplate open and fiddle around with a screwdriver.

A hologram of baseballgirl appears. She sports a strange double cinnamon bun hairdo.

She beseeches you:

“67MARQUEZ, for many months you’ve loyally served Blez in the war against single-minded rosterbatory tedium on AN. Now he begs you to help him in his struggle against the spreading Holliday Lineup Permutation Freak Out. I regret that I am unable to present Blez’s request in person, or even in the form of a blog comment, but if I were to do so 74mk’s silly Star Wars schtick would break down completely. I have placed a mint condition 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson card in the glove compartment of this R2 unit. Blez will know how to retrieve it. You can do whatever you want with this droid, but for the love of God finish writing your Rickey tribute ASAP. This is our most desperate hour. Help us, 67MARQUEZ, you’re our only hope. Well. Perhaps not ‘only’. But, you know, among the few in any case.”

Final reset. No imagining necessary:

I enjoy all these discussions about who we should sign and why and if we should pull the trigger on imaginary trades involving Trevor Cahill, multiple C prospects, Brian Giles, and cash, and whether Rafael Furcal’s hypothetical fourth year option should be for $10.1 million or $10.3 million.

It’s all interesting stuff, and I have emerged from it feeling reasonably educated about the A’s present roster and alternatives for improvement. However, I estimate it will take only 2-3 additional Holliday-centric fanposts to land me in a colorless padded room somewhere, strapped to a metal board with a rubber slab between my teeth and wires sticking out of my forehead.

So stop diddling around on Raiders blogs (and, like, working and/or spending time with your family), and finish the long ago promised Rickey Henderson post.

Thanks.

Too long, didn't read

But if 74mk wrote it, +1 any way.

I bring sort of good news

Every night, after my 12 hour work day, on those nights I don’t stop by to say hello to a son who no longer thinks I am the greatest person in this and every solar system, but who desperately needs my guidance even as he fights it…after getting home to feed first the dog, and then myself (and be sure that my dog eats better than me)…I am finally able to retire to my den, write a few sentences, scan a few pics, and find a few quotes. That day of promise fulfillment is coming, friend, and coming soon. Perhaps you might be able to enjoy it with your Thanksgiving meal. Perhaps with leftovers the next day or the day after that.

I'm here to talk about the past.

Very much looking forward to it

I’m kinda sorta contemplating trekking to Cooperstown next year for his Hall of Fame induction. The A’s are in New York that weekend, so the timing is propitious.

by 74mk on Nov 19, 2008 8:43 PM PST up reply actions

I will be there

My oldest sister turns 50 that weekend (a few months after Rickey who hits the half century mark this Christmas), so we’re trying to plan something big. Either way, I am headed there. Saw Eck’s, can’t miss this one.

Good luck to Wakamatsu.

He did a good job…and I am not surprised that other teams noticed.

Rotoworld always lists stuff under players' names

even if its general stuff (i.e. managers) who have nothing to do with the player himself.

I know that's a pisser, baby.

by Blicks on Nov 18, 2008 6:33 PM PST up reply actions

It would be better if they always listed stuff under Ichiro's name -- for all teams.

I guess the formula for this story was

Wakamatsu = Japanese
Ichiro = Japanese
:: Wakamatsu = Ichiro

Which is not racist, just logic.

by rightbackin on Nov 18, 2008 7:12 PM PST up reply actions

Well, to be picky...

you are using the ‘equals’ operator incorrectly in the first two instances.
Instead, you should use the ‘member of’ operator, which looks like a three pronged capital C, sorta.

And it’s not logic, but Set Theory.

What's more funny is when they make mistakes and completely mis-appropriate people

Occasionally you’ll open up your Fantasy Sports team page and see a Player Note that says,

Carlos Delgado, 1b, Mets

Donald Driver practiced at half-speed Wednesday and indicated to team officials that he plans to be in the lineup “no matter what” for Monday’s night showdown with the Rams.

Fantasy Spin: Pencil Driver in for his usual 4 catches and 60 yards. He’s a decent play against the Rams, but shouldn’t be your No. 1 option.

by notsellingjeans on Nov 18, 2008 7:18 PM PST up reply actions

Each team has one players who just happens

to be at the top of Rotoworld’s list for that team.

Any story about the team that doesn’t reference a specific player will default to the top-of-the-list player. For the Mariners it’s Ichiro.

Congrats to Don! He’s a nice guy from what I saw when I spoke with him a couple times this past season and he seems deserving of this opportunity.

When Geren was hired in 2006, wasn’t it 2-Year Deal? Did I miss the extension? When does Geren’s current contract expire? Thanks.

2 years plus an option

The option was exercised after Year One.

BTW, anyone know when Macha’s contract finally stops paying him not to coach the team?
