Will Beane sign Holliday to an extension?

There is a slight disagreement among us.  I think there is zero chance that Beane signs Holliday to an extension.  Grover (and, I use the capital "g" only becasue it begins a sentence) believes there is a 100% chance Beane will sign him to an extension.

Grover is a smart guy...  I think he's right about most things he posts on AN.  (Example:  The Case for Trading Kotsay)  But, he's just stubborn about this.

So, who is right?  Is grover right when he says there is a 100% chance the A's sign Holliday to an extension?  Or, am I right when I say there is zero chance?

Your votes will be tallied.

Foolsh, you lying son of a bitch

I dare you to post a link to the comment I made saying there was a 100% chance the A’s sign Holliday to an extension.

And what the Hell is that supposed to mean, anyways? That there’s a 100% chance the A’s will make an offer to Holliday? That it’s a lock they’ll sign him to an extension? I’m just trying to figure out what you’re saying, because I didn’t say anything like this. You’re making up lies about me and I don’t appreciate that.

Your position was that Holliday had no say in where he plays in 2010

You said, multiple times, that Boras will find him the deal with the most dollars and that is where Holliday will end up.

I said that was bullshit.

I’ll make this real simple, Foolsh. I’m headed off to bed. When I wake up in the morning I’m going to check AN. You will have either posted the link that has me stating this “100% chance” nonsense or you will have deleted this fanpost. If you have not done either of these things I will do everything I can to get Blez to ban you. I may not pull it off but I’ll do my best to make it happen.

Your choice Foolsh. Let’s see if you want to live up to your moniker.

agreed

you’re trying to draw people into this disagreement through the use of a poll which hardly makes sense (somewhere in between what? you’re asking a yes or no question, either they extend him or they don’t) either way, i think the point that grover was trying to make was that none of us can know with 100% certainty, yet you went ahead and made a post claiming the exact opposite on his part.

could it be...

grover’s comments, despite how “right” he is, seem a little over the top. I mean, who really cares if you think that about a Holliday extension or not? This makes you call someone a lying son of a bitch? You care that much that you want to ban him? That’s foolshishness.

Foolsh…why you single someone out and create a whole fanpost about this is foolshishness. You could have made your point and not even brough up grover’s name.

I’ve been a member at AN since the ‘05 campaingn…it’s stuff like this that keeps me from coming over here and posting more regularly. Plus, the sheer volume of fantasy GM ideas is a little creepy.

by carp on Nov 18, 2008 6:54 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I agree.

grover, you seem to be overreacting quite a bit.

I’ll take your word for it that you didn’t say what is being attributed to you, for many reasons, one being Foolsh’s incessant love for Byrnes despite his lack of ability. Having said that, calling someone a “lying son of a bitch” and threatening to ban someone is grossly unprofessional, especially coming from an author of the site, since I do have higher expectations for an author.

Considering all this, isn’t the best defense to a libelous statement a forceful, cogent and professional argument pointing out the lie? Why not just say what you’ve said without the “lying son of a bitch” and threat to ban? That would have equally gotten your point across and shown to the rest of us that Foolsh misquoted/misrepresented/lied about your position. It’s this type of reaction that I think makes AN less desirable to visit. Honestly, I find your comments more objectionable than Foolsh’s apparent lie.

It’s kinda/sorta interesting. Personally, I think there’s no way Beane signs Holliday to an extension. Holliday had it really, really good in Colorado, and there was no way he wasn’t testing Free Agency.

You're clearly wrong, both in your position and in your characterization of grover's position.

At the very least, you have to concede that the A’s would have a reasonable likelihood of signing him if a situation similar to Jermaine Dye’s first season with the A’s occurred. Furthermore, you should concede that if anyone says there is a 100% chance of something happening or not happening, in virtually every case, they’re wrong, period.

This diary is stupid and pointless. The two sentences I just wrote above, I believe, are the only baseball related discussion that it spurred. It’s clearly just written to bait grover.

dang it... you went and put baseball related discussion in here...

now, I can’t delete the diary fanpost. But, I’ll concede your point… If a Dye-like injury were to occur, there might be a slim chance for the A’s to extend Holliday. But, for a period long enough for him to be productive? Don’t know that I’d want to if he suffered such an injury.

And, some people take me too seriously sometimes. I apologize to grover for (obviously) misrepresenting his position.

Building a World Series contender.....

Signing Holliday is a no-brainer. It is this simple…. The vast majority of World Series winning teams have been built around a superstar. Most of the time, if you don’t have a superstar you can’t compete. If Beane has any thoughts of returning the A’s to World Series contention (which he does) then he should drop the coin (or convince Lew to drop the coin) and lock Holliday up for 5 years. Try to get 6 years for $100mn, but be willing to do 5 years/$100mn.

Come on…….who disagrees with me that this a no-brainer? Why continue to field a team that has no chance of winning?

by Ricky HOF Henderson on Nov 18, 2008 12:51 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

At 6 for $100m, I'm giddy ...

at 5 for $100m, I’m happy …

If Holliday has a good season, though, neither of those figures come close to getting it done …

Devo, I wonder if anybody knows what it will take to get it done.

Something that I’ve noticed lacking in most of these discussions is the potential ramifications of the current economic crisis. I have a feeling that there will be a lot less discretionary income available for people to use to be entertained by multi-millionaire athletes. Beane’s a bright guy – by waiting this out, the market may change and he may be able to sign Holliday to a long-term extension well below what we all think the contract should cost. I doubt the player salary inflation will continue in the current economy.

by Flash G on Nov 18, 2008 8:55 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe, but I doubt it ...

Seems to me that the folks who WolfeCo are depending on to fill up a fancy, small new stadium are, if anything, helped by the economic downturn.

Salary inflation will slow eventually — but not until revenue growth slows, which will most likely happen after every team has a fancy new stadium and every one that it makes sense for has their own local sports network. They aren’t yet maximizing revenue so revenue growth and, thus, salaries will continue onwards and upwards …

Foolsh..

grover wants you to delete this diary because he feels it misrepresents his position on Holliday. Why not be a nice guy and do it? grover… next time ask in a nicer way , please.

At this point, I'd just as soon leave it as a record of a conversation

Conversations happen and I think anyone who reads through can see that grover feels misrepresented. I’m not sure there would be much value in “erasing” the conversation. Whereas I can see much value in not having this conversation in the first place!

I would agree that it would be ok to leave it...

except that grover never says anywhere in this thread that that would be ok with him. I think the bigger thing would be to honor grover’s request. It clearly upset him greatly.

Many times on this site I have requested a pony

How many ponies do I have right now? Zero. That upsets me greatly, but I don’t see anyone doing anything about it.

What was my point?

I had a pony!

When I was a little girl in Poland, we all had ponies. My sister had pony, my cousin had pony. So, what’s wrong with that?

OT, but

I got rather depressed by the “Marxist, Ayers,Joe Plumber” elements of the campaign. Goodgodalmighty…and to think, a thread like this is actually MORE civil and reasonable…

Officially awaiting the 2009 season.

He may as well capitalize on his 15 minutes.

Actually it's not so bad of a topic

if you just add “in bed” at the end of all the sentences.
