A potential steal
First before you read this notice the *potential*.
What about Mark Prior? I know we have depth pitching, but when this guy is healthy, he can pitch. Yes I know that he hasn't been healthy in about 4 years. If the A's could work out an incentive deal, the could pick up a low risk potential #1 or 2 pitcher. Again, I know it is unlikely and that its a position of depth for the A's, but a little more depth never hurts. The very issue that makes it unlikely we will sign him makes him a very attractible commodity. He is hurt, therefore cheap.

Haha
I wouldn’t blame them in the slightest. Its a no risk, high upside sign. I’d only sign him to a Minor League deal, and if he isn’t healthy by Opening day release him. Don’t lie he does have talent…
when he plays.

And Rusty Greer for the OF!
Shouldn’t he be healthy by now?

He might make a decent batting practice pitcher

A potential steal... yes
A probable waste… also yes.
Then again, everybody is a potential steal

Its kind of funny...
how everybody jumps on the health issue. Obviously its an issue, but when we originally signed Frank Thomas, it was under similar circumstances. Somebody of Prior’s potential can’t go unnoticed, even when he’s injured. You don’t get anywhere playing it safe.

There's playing it safe

I disagree...
You don’t have to put any serious money into him. Just another Minor League deal. Thats roughly 2.6k a month? For his potential upside its a risk I would take. Assume he isn’t healthy, you lose what 15k at the most? If he is healthy you could be looking at one of the top 10 pitchers in baseball.
The deal would be almost exactly like Frank Thomas, except if anything you could probably do this cheaper. You sign him, perhaps get 1 good year out of him, give Cahill, Simmons, and Gallagher some room to develop.
By no means am I saying that Prior should be a cornerstone player of the A’s, but for the right price its a risk I think could pay off nicely.

The Padres paid him $1 million last year
He hasn’t pitched in a pro game since 2006.
You aren’t the only person to consider this plan, which means there is likely to be an actual market for Mr. Prior’s promise of services.
Let him be.

Except Prior throws 85 mph now.
He doesn’t have “potential” anymore.

Doesn't matter
Especially with his breaking stuff. He needs to learn how to actually pitch instead of throw. Plenty of successful pitchers have thrown the ball sub 90.
