Advantage Beane, Swisher to Yankees

To all the GM's out there, just in case you were wondering, Beane is better than you.  No, I am not referring to the recent trade for Holliday, although I love that one as well.  No, I am delving back a year to the trade of Nick Swisher to the White Sox.  The A's received Gio Gonzalez and right-hander Fautino De Los Santos, along with outfielder Ryan Sweeney.  Today, the White Sox traded Swisher to the Yankees for Minor league pitcher Jeff Marquez.  Advantage Beane.  Swisher had the lowest batting average in the league last year while Sweeney hit well.  In addition, Gio tore up AAA (although the majors weren't pretty) and Fautino got hurt, but is supposed to be the best of all three of them.  Do you think that Beane would even trade Sweeney straight up for Swisher now?  The man is the master of the sell-high.

That would be awesome.

If the Yanks are planning on playing Swisher in center, they might rather have Sweeney and sign Tex to play 1b. Sweeney is the superior defender in CF. Maybe Cashman is an idiot and will fall in love with Sweeney’s age and Batting Average.

Very seriously doubt that

If the contracts were equal, maybe. But maybe not since Sweeney can play a competent CF.

Swisher is the better player ...

Sweeney probably got a little lucky in2008 and Swisher (particularly in terms of doubles) got unlucky … defensively, they’re probably fairly comparable. Sweeney, though, is a much better value …

Really? Sweeney did pretty good for his rookie year and Swisher costs more and is inconsistant as last year shows.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved Swisher but Sweeney has a future with the A’s. Just think how good he would have been had he not had to play a lot of the year with his fingers taped together and in pain.

How about Barton for Swisher straight up?

One thing I loved about Swisher that I also loved about Tejada and that was that both were cheerleaders.

I loved to watch their antics and it would get the rest of the team going.

I agree with all of this except that they're comparable defensively

Swisher won’t kill you in the corners; Sweeney is a plus corner OF. Sweeney won’t kill you in center; Swisher just might.

Uh

I like Swooney and all, but over the past 3 seasons Swisher has averaged 13-14 DPs a season. That’s playing about 153 games per season. This year in 115 games, Swoooney had 9 DPs. Swooney GDPs 2.07% of his PAs. Swisher GDPs 2.08. (Yes, I’m using 3 years for Swish and 1 for Sweeney so it’s not a 100 fair comparison. I think the point is really effing clear though).

Huge whiffs? Well, Swooney struck out more frequently this year. Swisher had a higher number, but he also had 150+ more PA.

So, uh, who you crappin’? (Or should it be “Who you carpin’?”)

If all it took was Marquez or a comparable (HRod?)....

Beane should have reacqired Swish. I highly doubt that Williams would have traded him back though. It would be too much like admitting he soured on Swish.

Speaking of Williams is there any GM who makes as many obvious win or obvious loss trades? Garcia (both in and out), Thome, AJ, Danks, Quentin were all amazing pickups. But Swish (out), Koch, Podsednik were all terrible deals.

agree

sweeney needs a full healthy season. then again, full healthy seasons have been hard to come by in oakland recently…

and wasn’t sweeney a rookie last year??? are you guys seriously making a direct statistical comparison between a rookie and a 5 (?) year veteran? sensationalism and rushing to take a hard line on issues have killed sports journalism and apparently AN is no better…

that said, as i told some yankee fan friends yesterday, i think swish will do well in ny. he’ll be batting lefty a lot and loving it. not to mention ozzie could wear on a player, chicago is a miserable city, and pierzynski must be a douche to play with. i hate the yankees, but girardi seems like a good guy for younger players, and how could playing with jeter not rub off on you well? i think swish’s awesome personality and clubhouse presence wil do well with the yankees, too. unfortunately, he’ll probably make them a lot better…

It might not have been a great move if KW had left Swisher out of the deal. He really got close to nothing in return for a very good major leaguer and a decent relief prospect.

Swisher is who we thought he was

Sweeney is a much better defensive outfielder, younger, more athletic, and ultimately more power than Swisher. Swisher is an excellent 1st baseman, and apparently that is why the Yankees got him. I don’t know the dimensions of the new Yankee stadium so hard to say how that will affect his power, but he didn’t do that well in a hitters park in Chicago.

by Laoren on Nov 14, 2008 10:23 AM PST reply actions

Ultimately more power?

I would be willing to place a wager on the fact that Sweeney will never hit 35 homers in a single season
