Yankees Acquire Nick Swisher By Tim Dierkes [November 13 at 2:41pm CST]

According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, the Yankees acquired Nick Swisher from the White Sox for minor league pitcher Jeff Marquez.  It's not yet known if other players are involved.

Swisher, 28 this month, hit .219/.332/.410 in 588 plate appearances this year.  He's set to earn $5.3MM in '09, $6.75MM in '10, $9MM in '11, and has a $10.25MM club option for '12 with a $1MM buyout.  So, about $22MM over the next three years.

Excuse me while I cry.

The Yankees have acquired first baseman Nick Swisher and Class AA right-hander Kanekoa Texeira from the White Sox, according to major-league sources.

Swisher, a switch-hitter, likely will play first base for the Yankees, replacing Jason Giambi, who is a free agent.

The exact players going back to the White Sox are not yet known, but sources say the White Sox will be receiving two minor leaguers and one major-league reserve. ESPN.com is reporting that Yankees Class AAA right-hander Jeff Marquez is in the deal.

and it sounds (from multiple sources now) like the major-league reserve is Betemit.

“More than” should be used when referring to numbers.

And, typically, “10” should be “ten” in this context.

Some people would also have a problem with the “there are” and "them, " since in my sentence I never actually say what the subject is. I don’t have a problem there; people can infer the meaning just fine.

good timing

Remember how Moneyball made White Sox GM Kenny Williams look like a fool because Beane essentially tricked him into taking closer Billy Koch off his hands? Sure, it was a dumb move, but Williams currently has a championship ring on his finger and is widely called one of the best GM’s going. And he doesn’t spend Yankees money. Beane? Zilcho on the jewelry front. When you’re making a list of the greatest performers in any sporting pursuit, you always have to give strong consideration to the guy with the rings. They matter.

by WaddellCanseco on Nov 13, 2008 4:26 PM PST up reply actions

Legitimately good players have career years all the time

Buehrle is my favorite pitcher in baseball right now, but up until that point that was his best season (just barely).

Off the top of my head, Garland, Buehrle, Hermanson, Pollitte, and Cotts all pitched far better than they ever had before. I think Contreras had a career year that year, too.

by thejd44 on Nov 13, 2008 5:28 PM PST up reply actions

Contreras definitely did

And Garcia had been pitching poorly for a few years prior, then had a good 2004 and a good 2005, and now has been back to pitching poorly (well not poorly exactly, league average-ish). They didn’t really have much of a lineup either – their best hitters were Konerko (136 OPS+) and Dye (118). But they got four huge years from their SPs and 5 or 6 great to good years in the bullpen. It was lightning in a bottle.

I just read the on MLBTR that the Marlins are interested in O-Dog

if thats true, that means Uggla could be on the trade market, and possibly playing a corner infield position for the A’s next year.

by UOSportsDude on Nov 13, 2008 2:11 PM PST reply actions

Gotta love rumors

I saw that, too. But this has to be one of the least substantiated rumors I’ve seen in a while. The Marlins have started their offseason by getting rid of arb. eligible guys (Jacobs, Olsen, Willingham, Gregg) who are going to make more than the league minimum (say it ain’t so!) for young guys that will be projects, but they’re dirt cheap. Somebody is going to overpay for Orlando Hudson, and it’s not going to be the Marlins. I would like to see Uggla’s power bat in our lineup, too, but I don’t think this rumor helps it happen.

Related question-can Uggla play 3B? I’m sure he could manage at 1B, but I haven’t heard whether or not he could handle the hot corner. I think he has been strictly a 2B at the big league level.

Uggla is just a putz in the field no matter where you put him

He’s not fast, he has no range, his hands are made of stone. He’s totally lacking in defensive tools.

That's just an unbelievably bad deal for the Sox.

I’ll bet a few AL GMs are wondering, “Christ Kenny, that’s just what we all need to do – HELP the $220MM payroll team get better. Thanks.”

Huge upgrade for the Yanks either way – they have insurance if they lose out on Tex, they have insurance if they don’t get Abreu back, OR they have an upgrade in CF. Basically they can’t lose wherever they slot Swish. And, they just gained a ton of flexibility in their off-season machinations.

by notsellingjeans on Nov 13, 2008 2:48 PM PST reply actions

Seriously

This deal just sucks all around. Not only does it make NY better, but it might actually make it more likely for LAA to re-sign Tex (which no one around here would want to see).

I mean, crap, I am sure we would have been willing to give up an actually decent prospect (HRod? Mazzaro?) for him. Or, with Kenny’s “need for speed” we should have offered him Davis and Patterson — not one but two speedy guys! — for Swisher and seen if Williams might have sent us something else back. My guess is that somehow Kenny would “lose face” if he sent Swisher back to the A’s, so we were probably out of the running from the start (despite how stupid that is compared to what Kenny ended up getting).

I also just think Swish is a perfect guy for us to acquire now. Instant upgrade at 1B, and can slot into a corner OF position in 2010 if Holliday leaves, and Barton regains his form in AAA.

ESPN let everyone know of the company our players keep with Swish

with at least 502 plate appearances from this past season

From the bottom up

Nick Swisher, White Sox .219
Daric Barton, A’s .226
Michael Bourn, Astros .229
Jack Cust, A’s .231
Mark Ellis, A’s .233
Rickie Weeks, Brewers .234
Kevin Millar, Orioles .234

by monkeyball on Nov 13, 2008 7:51 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah I know

That explains why our lineup was last year last in runs. They all had runners on and shit themselves either by making an out or walking.

Obvious had our 3 had Batting averages of even .250, we would have scored many more runs. But lets just either make an out or leave them on base for the next “Hitter” to come thru. My though is players with batting averages of less than .250 should be euthanized (joking of course) but what do I know.

This is my once a month rant.

When I saw the stats with Swish and our 3. I just thought, what’s wrong with this picture

by Trainman on Nov 13, 2008 7:52 PM PST up reply actions

And adding to that

I think Holliday will make a big difference on our lineup. Now lets get Furcal and get rid of Crosby and we should be fine. At least Cust will have someone to help him get better pitches to hit.

by Trainman on Nov 13, 2008 7:53 PM PST up reply actions

If Barton and Ellis both had OBPs and SLGs that equaled what Cust had

The A’s would’ve scored a lot more runs, even if their batting averages were the same.

The only reason this trade bothers me is because the White Sox essentially traded Gio Gonzalez, Ryan Sweeney, and Fautino De Los Santos for Nunez, Betemit, and Marquez.

So... why didn't the A's trade for Swisher?

was it a case of:

A) (as arcman notes above) Kennyball saves face by not re-trading with the A’s, fully exposing how much value he’d shed in his transactions

B) nobody expected it to be this easy, and the Yankees were the first to inquire, thus winning the Nick Swisher Giveaway Sweepstakes

C) he doesn’t fit in the A’s plans… this option includes: Swisher sucks = strickouts!!1, look at our outfield clusterf$&%, his contract is too pricey/long, etc
(I have a hard time finding any argument supporting this that doesn’t have serious flaws)

D) I didn’t take the time to look at this trade in depth and i don’t understand baseball very well (both probably true) and this really wasn’t that lopsided of a trade

E) something else

little bit of A, lot of B

Did you overpay for those eggs? @('.')@

by monkeyball on Nov 14, 2008 11:06 AM PST up reply actions

No, this was a lopsided trade.

Wilson Betemit is a poor man’s Juan Uribe. Jeff Marquez was the Yankees’ #14 prospect last year according to John Sickels. #14 in a system that has a couple very promising guys (Joba, Kennedy, Tabata were in that list), but isn’t very deep. Nunez wasn’t in the top 20.

The Sox also gave up Kanekoa Texeira, a 22-year-old minor league reliever who has a 2.25 ERA in 144 pro innings. 149 Ks, 44 walks, and THREE home runs. Texeira is only a reliever, but I think he might be the best pitcher involved in this deal.

To recap: The Sox gave up the best player (Swisher) and possibly the best prospect (Texeira). You can’t get much more lopsided.

I think your A is most likely, and C is part of it. Clearly, you could get Swisher back without trading Buck/Cunningham/Sweeney (or Barton). Based on what the Yankees gave up, including any of those guys would be an overpay. But if you get Swisher and give up Pennington, Gray, and Dallas Braden (that package might actually be more than what the Yanks gave up), you have created a larger logjam at a deep position. You almost have to trade Sweeney or someone, but it’s silly to do so if they aren’t asking for that much.

If the A’s really wanted Swisher back, they could get him from the Yankees now. The price, I’d suspect, would be somewhere between what the A’s got for him and what the Sox got for him.

re:logjam

swisher at 1B and send staplehead down?
i mean, if the A’s are going for contention this year, why not make the upgrade, even if you think Barton is bouncing back and Swisher would only be a marginal upgrade?

and then swisher replaces holliday on as corner OF next year

or gets traded three prospects who are almost certainly better than betemit, marquez and nunez.

With the trade you mention, thejd44, the A's

would just be in a better position to trade surplus the OFers/1Bmen for help on the left side of the infield. The logjam isn’t really a problem.

I still see Manny going to the Yankees or Dodgers…

Oh fuck no I hope not.,

Since K-Rod probably won’t be signing with the Angels, I hope they up Kerry Wood to take his place. Better pitcher, but spends a ton of time on the DL.

I’d prefer Manny on the Angels any day, because one of him or Vlad will have to be in the field, and that’s good for the opposing team.

This.

by Blicks on Nov 14, 2008 12:29 PM PST up reply actions

Wood seems to be healthy now that he's smaller and pitching in relief

I’d rather they give a crapload of money to K-Rod.

Hmm...Arte said stuff that made it sound like the slegnA were done with K-Rod.

I want a crapload given to K-Rod, but don’t see it likely.

If not, why don’t they bring back K-Rod’s predecessor!!!!

This.

by Blicks on Nov 14, 2008 6:38 PM PST up reply actions

You're probably right

But I’m not sure the K-Rod market is going to be as strong as he thinks. Maybe he’ll lower his demands and the Angels will be interested again.
