Holliday Trade is official

A’s Acquire OF Matt Holliday from Colorado
OF Carlos Gonzalez, LHP Greg Smith and RHP Huston Street Traded to Rockies
OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s acquired outfielder Matt Holliday from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for pitchers Greg Smith and Huston Street and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez in a trade announced today.
Holliday, the National League MVP runner-up and leading Major League All-Star vote-getter (player vote) in 2007, finished third in the National League with a .321 batting average last year. A .319 career hitter in five seasons with the Rockies, he has the fifth best average in the majors over the last five years and has hit .300 or better in each of the last four seasons. The 28-year old outfielder added 25 home runs and 88 RBI in 139 games in 2008 and also stole 28 bases, which ranked ninth in the NL.
“Improving the offense was clearly our stated priority this offseason,” said Billy Beane, the A’s vice president and general manager. “Trading for a player of Matt’s caliber begins the process of creating an environment in which our young hitters can continue to improve and our young pitchers can continue to develop into one of the best staffs in the league.”
Holliday enjoyed his best season in 2007 when he led the NL in batting (.340), hits (216), RBI (137), extra-base hits (92) and doubles (50) while finishing third in runs (120) and fourth in home runs (36). Propelling the Rockies to their first-ever World Series appearance, he hit five home runs in the 2007 postseason, the most of any player during those playoffs. The 6-4, 235-pound slugger batted .333 (5-for-15) with two homers and four RBI against Arizona in the National League Championship Series to earn NLCS Most Valuable Player honors.
A native of Stillwater, Okla., Holliday received 336 votes in the 2007 MVP balloting, only 17 votes shy of the winning candidate, Philadelphia’s Jimmy Rollins. The right-handed hitter is a three-time National League All-Star (2006-08) and has a two-year contract through the 2009 season. He will be eligible for free agency following next season.
Gonzalez made his major league debut with Oakland last year and hit .242 with four home runs and 26 RBI in 85 games over two stints with the A’s. He was one of six players acquired from Arizona in the Dan Haren trade on December 14, 2007, and began the season at Triple-A Sacramento before making his debut with Oakland on May 30. The 23-year old outfielder was named the A’s number one prospect by Baseball America prior to the 2008 season
Smith was also acquired in the Haren trade and also made his big league debut with Oakland last year. He posted a 7-16 record and a 4.16 ERA in a team leading 32 starts and led the majors with 16 pickoffs. The 24-year old left-hander also topped the A’s in innings (190.1), walks (87), home runs (21) and runs (92). His losses tied for seventh most in Oakland history.
Street began the 2008 season as the A’s closer and converted 18 of 25 (72.0%) save opportunities, which was the second lowest percentage among American League relievers. He was replaced by Brad Ziegler as closer on August 8 and compiled a 7-5 record and a 3.73 ERA in 63 appearances. The 25-year old right-hander saved 94 games in his four seasons with Oakland, which ranks fourth in A’s history.

Wow.

Batting Cust in front of Holliday would give Cust better pitches, they won't try to pitch around him.

Jeez, that’s the new epicenter of the A’s… Holliday, Anderson, Corey Brown…
On a side note, suddenly I understand why they had to pay Holliday multiple millions to buy him out of football. When I think about trying to pry recruits away from a Big 12 South school, phrases like “from my cold, dead hands” keep echoing around my mind…

There is no Big 12 South in baseball
Despite the name of the conference, a couple of Big 12 schools do not maintain baseball teams. As a result, the baseball conference is a true round-robin rather than a divisional system.

I would argue that they're very close
If you factor in Hannahan’s very good defense, Blake’s poor D, and each player’s projected regression to the mean (which helps Hannahan’s ‘09 projection and hurts Blake’s).
More to point, Billy has publicly said that he won’t acquire a “name” player that would block Chavvy’s ability to return to third. Blake qualifies, since he’s the best 3b on the market and will get multiple years.

Angels have won a lot of games by one run from aggressive base running. Playoffs, not so much.
I predict K-Rod will not do quite as well if he leaves the Angels for a new team in 2009. After he blows his first save on the new team after they have signed him for (near) all that money, he won’t be able to handle all the boo’s from the which ever team’s fans. Frankie is a very emotional player.

Boras
Boras has gotten a black eye over his representation of a few players recently. He knows his business is built on players trusting he represents their interests, not on trying to squeeze out every penny without regard to a player’s comfort level or other interests. As someone else posted on AN recently, the decision on which team to sign with ultimately rests with the player. Some players may worry more about the risk of a career-ending injury (or are happy on a particular team) and will sign for less than they might if they wait a year and test the free agent waters. Boras is utlimately an advisor, albeit one with a track record for pushing for maximum dollars for his clients.
by SA on Nov 12, 2008 11:08 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Good points - add to that the A-Rod breakup
and the “buyer’s remorse” Zito contract, and one wonders if Boras is losing some of his luster/stature.

25 minutes long. Billy and Holliday both answered questions. Matt sounds like a good guy, has good things to say about the A’s. Friends with Huston (funny that they were traded for each other). Played in the AFL with Hannahan. His brother coached Devine. Tulo(?) is good friends with Crosby, so they have a mutual friend. And, of course, Gallego.

A few statements jumped out at me...
Beane seemed sincere when he stated that he is counting on Chavez being available this year.
He also flat out stated that Sweeney will be playing CF, and that the whole team is high on Buck, although he fell short of setting him in RF.
He repeated that the plan is to keep Holliday for the entire year and then either extend him or accept the draft picks.
I found Holliday to be fairly reserved. He stated that he would play out this year and try his hardest to help the organization, bla bla bla. We will have to wait to see how he feels after playing here for a year, but if I had to guess I would say Oakland would not be his top choice of locations to sign his first free agent contract.
I hope I am wrong.

I am awestruck...
that anyone would be angry at this trade. Greg Smith was 6-17 with a 4-plus ERA and coming off elbow surgery. Street’s numbers have fallen off since his rookie of the year campaign. He blew 32 percent of his saves last year! I never felt comfortable with him closing out games because it seemed like he always had runners on. Carlos Gonzalez may or may not be a stud. He has a lot of holes in his swing and he hasn;t developed much power yet. Holliday is a stud, hits for power, average and stole 28 of 30 bags last year. I absolutely cannot wait to see him in the green and gold. We have plenty of young pitchers to compensate for the loss of a #5 starter and a closer who lost his job. Can’t wait to see Holliday mashing in 2009!

I'm starting to come around to this trade
If the A’s are struggling in July ‘09, I think Beane can get at least the value of CarGon + Street.. Losing Greg “nibbles” Smith doesn’t bother me… AT ALL.
On a Side Note: Being in Denver for the last 6+ years, I have seen Matt Holliday play a lot of baseball. He’s a solid player, and can carry a team for stretches. So, I’ve also heard the rumors of Colorado extending Holliday. The Rockies were never w/in close range of getting together on a long-term deal. And I just don’t see the A’s coming to terms w/ Holliday, either. He’s going to ask for 7-Years/140+Million, and he’ll probably get something close to that from the Red Sox.
