Would Beane trade for Holliday for only 1 year?

I wonder if there is a window for us to sign him long term?

Speculation on Fox Sports

Carlos Gonzalez, Greg Smith, and Huston Street

MLB trade rumors:

2:30pm: Brown says the two teams have agreed in principle to a deal that will send Gonzalez, Smith, and Street to the Rockies.

I’m fine with that, just happy to keep cahill and anderson.

what is mind boggling to me though

is that we traded for a 1 year rental in a year where our young talent isn’t quite ready to compete. I HOPE to god that Billy spoke with Holliday in private and there were talks of a long term deal.

We gave away Carlos Gonzalez?

Wait, WHAT?!?!?!!?

Aw, man. No like. No like one bit.

Ryan Sweeney: I probably irrationally embraced him before you did.

Carlos getting sent to AAA last season

was an indication he may not be the player projected. He needed another year in AAA

by Trainman on Nov 10, 2008 1:04 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Great

Give him another year, then. The kid just turned 23. 23!!! Meanwhile, we’ve got a Boras client on our hands who’s only under contract for 1 year. Yikes.

Look, I’ll trust Billy till the end. And who knows, maybe Gonzalez isn’t really part of the deal. I just thought there was no way in hell they’d let him go— of all the position players, he was THE centerpiece-type player in the high minors.

Perhaps this means we’ll be seeing more of Sweeney in CF?

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ This is what they say so far

By Tim Dierkes [November 10 at 2:20pm CST]
2:54pm: ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick confirmed Smith is in the deal.

2:39pm: Troy Renck says the A’s had been offering Street and Gonzalez. Meanwhile ESPN adds Ryan Sweeney and Gonzalez to their mix of players discussed.

2:30pm: Brown says the two teams have agreed in principle to a deal that will send Gonzalez, Smith, and Street to the Rockies.

2:24pm: The ESPN report now says Brett Anderson was under discussion as well as Smith.

2:03pm: The ESPN guys talked to A’s assistant GM David Forst, who said, “It’s still an ongoing discussion.”

2:00pm: Ken Rosenthal chimes in. The deal may not be finalized for about 48 hours. Players discussed over the weekend: Carlos Gonzalez, Huston Street, and Smith. Rosenthal says the A’s do not plan to flip Holliday or trade him in July. Rosenthal also says the A’s could increase payroll to as high as $80MM, which could mean $25-30MM to play with.

1:57pm: ESPN’s Buster Olney and Jerry Crasnick say the two teams have agreed to terms, and believe pitcher Greg Smith was under discussion.

1:51pm: Yahoo’s Tim Brown also says a deal is close.

1:27pm: According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, the A’s traded for Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday. More as it comes in!

KNBR is reporting CarGon,Street, and Smith

Not sure where they got this info. If it’s true, I think it is a great thing. The offense was
woeful last year, Holliday is a proven hitter, plus he is right-handed. Even though CarGon
has potential, he was not as developed as we thought. We have a log jam of young,
promising outfielders anyway in Sweeney, Buck, and Cunninham. Smith was good but
is basically duplicated by Eveland and Braden. And Street didn’t figure in the plans
anymore, plus we have Casilla, Zeigler, and Devine.
