Open Game Thread: Playoffs - Day 5

How can you not love the month of October? It's Halloween-time (my favorite holiday), the unbearably hot California summer is finally showing signs of letting up, all three major American sports return to prime-time television, the Red Sox are once again dominating the Angels in the post-season and the Cubs are doing their best to make sure that the next 100 years follow in the path of the last 100 years! It's glorious I say!

Today is chock full of post-season baseball, as all but one of the division series' (the one that ended last night) will be on-display. In the first action of the day (10:00am PDT), the Phillies and Brewers square off one more time at Miller Park after the Crew staved off elimination last night with an inspired 4-1 win. The Phils will be going with former Athletic Bazooka/Joe "Cupcakes" Blanton, while the Brew Crew will counter with the most grizzly of grizzled vets, Jeff Suppan. I'm rooting Brew Crew all the way here. I like their style and several of their players particularly - I'm constantly dreaming up scenarios where Beane trades for JJ Hardy this winter!

In matinee action (1:00pm PDT), everyone's favorite Tampa Bay Rays look for the kill in Chicago's south side as they send Matt Garza to the mound to counter fellow-green-thumbed youngster John Danks. While I always try to wish Swisher the best, I despise Ozzie Guillen (and Orlando Cabrera) and the Rays are just so cute and lovable!

Then in the night-cap (4:07pm PDT), the BoSox will look for the K-O at home at Fenway against the hated Angels. I know it's wrong of me to root for one of the "big, bad, free-spending Evil Empire wolves" of the game that always come into the Coliseum once or twice a year and make it seem like Fenway west, but I honestly can't stand the Angels. Post-season stud Josh Beckett, still recovering from a strained side muscle, will toe the rubber for the Sox while Joe "Colonel" Saunders goes for the Halos.

Soup v. Cupcakes will be fun.

Lots of runs scored and lots of bullpen usage.

Fenway East? I think you mean Fenway West.

Ned Yost "threw away victories" with his mismanagement

On several occasions. You have two of the best pitchers in the game in CC/Sheets, top notch players in Braun and Fielder, and other solid contributors in Hardy, Hart, Bush, Parra, etc. Way too much talent not to make the playoffs.

And, the Brewers were several games back when Yost was fired.

What if your team had gotten eliminated in the 1st round for 4 straight seasons...

and then finally broke through a year or so later (a la the 2006 A’s). I think the “getting the monkey off your back” is worth the celebration.

But if the Red Sox do it after (hopefully) eliminating the angels? Not so warranted…

but i guess any series with the Rays is going to be odd. I still haven’t quite realized that they are an actual baseball team.

I would think that "average" is a bit of a stretch

6-5, 4.59 ERA, 82.1 IP, a .232 BAA is pretty average.
