Open Thread: Playoffs Day Four (cont.)
The Brewers stayed alive earlier today, and Rich Harden is trying to help the Cubs do the same - but going to the bottom of the fourth it's 2-0 Dodgers.

Two observations.
One, Rich Harden’s good fastball got left in Chicago.
Two, not throwing sliders must have been an Oakland edict, because he’s throwing plenty of them tonight.

I know it's morbid....
but every time he throws a pitch which results in a broken flying bat…..I imagine it’s his right arm flying across the field rather than pieces of the bat.

wtf.., i had no idea. interesting article.
Even more controversial was his affiliation with the John Birch Society, a right-wing, anti-communist organization. Show, Thurmond and Dravecky appeared at the Del Mar Fair in June 1984, passing out literature to help promote the society. As news spread of their affiliation, critical media coverage followed.
Then came an order by team owner Joan Kroc for players to cease political proselytizing in the clubhouse.
At one point, Show stopped talking to the media because he was upset at how the Birch society was portrayed.
"We were all pretty idealistic when we were young," said Thurmond, who resigned from the organization in 1993 and now works in the insurance business in Texas. "All three of us were adamantly opposed to communism, but there was a lot of pressure at the time dealing with that. People said it was racist and anti-Semitic, but they had Jewish members."
Said Dravecky: "It was just ultimately a love for his country. In some respects that whole thing was blown way out of proportion. It’s really sad. Sometimes, it’s guilt by association. Gosh, you had no idea it would be looked at in that way, but it was such a small part of who Eric was. There was so much more to the man than just that."

So it was right wing and anti-communist....
That pretty much describes the 80’s I think. I’ve heard of the JB society before, but I’ve always assumed it was nothing other than a conservative movement.

Maybe the best way to appreciate him is to
look at who, if the A’s don’t sign him, is likely to be the A’s SS for the next three years. In house: Crosby, Pennington, Petit. Trade options: possibilities like Hardy, J. Peralta would not come cheap (in return talent), and don’t field well, others (Zobrist, J. Wilson) don’t hit well, etc. FA: ??
The A’s don’t figure to have an opportunity a whole lot better than Furcal over the next 2-3 years.

I think Nico won this battle.
It is really hard for anyone to make a case for not signing him, when as he points out, we basically have nobody at that position already. If you look around the league, there aren’t very many great ss and I think Furcal is well above average. This playoff run good inflate his stock though, although I’m not sure how much of a factor it would have or if that would cause the A’s to be out of the running for him or not.

It's very common in playoff games.
If a starter gets into jams past the 4th inning, especially in a must-win, he gets pulled. Dave Bush got pulled after 70-80 pitches in the 6th, and he had been lights out.
Rich had just given up an RBI double with 1 out. Manny had been I-walked. 1 out in inning.

Watching the Angels get demolished is very, very
satisfying.
I haven’t been this excited since the A’s last got to the playoffs a few years back.
The ultimate tomorrow would be a David Ortiz 3 run homer in the bottom of the 9th off Kry-Rod when down by 2 runs with 2 outs on an 0-2 pitch.
May the Angels have only bad luck in the playoffs and anything bad goes as long as they lose, short of DEATH that is.

who woulda thunk the Dodgers would have been...
the first team to clinch an LCS berth in 2008?

Joe Torre is, indeed, the greatest manager of all time...

with a decent roster.

yeah low payroll was torre's problem over the previous 7 years

I'm speaking about Joe Torre as manager
from 1977 to 1996. One first place finish. A lot of mediocre records, but probably because he didn’t have the players…i.e., “properly funded”. From 1996-2001 he had about the best assemblage of players any manager could hope to have. And 2002-2007 teams were very talented, too.

Yeow!
another sweep in the first round. Something like, if you win the first game on the road, history is on your side (23-5 to take the five game series).
I tell ya, fans, baseball is not made for “playoff rounds”. Basketball, yes, not baseball.
Runs Please. A lot of them. The rest of the season. Thank you.

Certainly not a best of five format.
The DS should be increased to a best of seven.

It should go:
Best of seven, then best of nine, then best of eleven. And the World Series ends on Christmas!!!

Better:
World Series is best of 27. Baseball never ends.

Sounds good to me.
We have domed ballparks now…right?
Seriously though, change the format from 2-2-1 and make it 3-2 and 3-4 format. You lose the travel days and could easily accommodate a seven game first round.

See Selig's comments today
He says no best of seven first round, unless regular season is shortened. MLBPA says no…

Brinksmanship.
No way does Selig want a shorter season as the teams would lose revenue. He wants something else from the players.

History is DEFINITELY on your side.
It hasn’t happened in 7 years, and neither team from that series is currently in the playoffs.

The Dodgers were better in every phase of every game...
They would have won any length series right now.

Except zero - I do think that would have been a tie
But Soriano would still have struck out three times somehow.

Yes they were, insofar as "no bad fielding"
and “clutch hitting”.
And the Cubs, they didn’t show anything like the regular-season club. That’s what bothers me about the playoffs. Suddenly, teams don’t play like “the product” that got them to the playoffs. That is why I favor a playoff tournament, all day games, neutral site (like Las Vegas) and all the NL teams playing each other, all the AL teams also playing each other. I think you would see better quality of play. Teams would play until they lost four games, so chances are they would play 5-6 games, instead of “three and out”.

Soriano really looked awful all series
Like a “bad Crosby” – which is a concept I can usually only fathom in regards to David’s liver.

Manny with the big "FUCK YOU" to Boston
Just relax and happy to be in a new place. Something like that, I forgot what he said but it was a fuck you to Boston.
May the Angels suffer one more agonizing defeat in Boston and may K-Rod accidentally get in the way of a 120 mph line drive off David Ortiz's bat

If my post-season predictions hold (and I'm doing fairly well so far)
Manny (having helped bounce the Phillies) will face the Red Sox in the World Series.

Although I really want Tampa to throttle Boston,
I would love to see Manny hit some crushing final blow to the Red Sox Nation. Please baby jesus.

The Dodgers are a great team when their offense shows up.
Their pitching has been good all season, hell of a time for their offense to be clicking on all cylinders.
