Barton, Smith fine after surgeries
The A's on Tuesday announced that rookie first baseman Daric Barton and rookie left-hander Greg Smith underwent successful surgeries on Friday.
Barton, who batted .226 with nine homers, 47 RBIs and a .327 on-base percentage over 140 games, had surgery on his right hip. Smith, who went 7-16 with a 4.16 ERA in 32 starts, had what the team called "loose bodies" removed from his pitching elbow.
Here's the link to the official release.

Barton, Smith had surgeries?
On parts of their bodies which were never mentioned in injury reports at any point in the season?

but at least Ellis is going to be at the fanfest!! so I have something to look forward to!!!
And I’m going to the dinner on the diamond thing too, so that should be fun, assuming Swooney’s still on the team, because if he’s not…. (Billy Beane, if you’re reading this, yes that was a threat. and if you even think of moving Ellis…)

are you going to be at the fanfest? If I see someone hanging on Greg Smith’s arm, that’ll probably be you! :) But seriously, if you go, we should meet up!! it would be awesome to meet you! and we have to drag zigfan along, of course!!!

I can’t go this year but next year I am planning 2 trips…1 to see a few games at the A’s stadium since I have never been and the other will have to be fanfest.
If you catch someone hanging on Greg…toss them a dirty look and maybe a rock from me ;) Ok, you don’t have to toss a rock..but atleast a dirty look!!!
This upcoming season I will again buy behind the visitors dugout tickets in Fenway to see the A’s a couple times..I’ll be sure to wear my Smith shirts/jerseys and hold up signs for him.. :) The last game I went to I got some aweeeeeeesome pictures of your boy Ellis! He was so NICE!!

Its like this every off season.
Every vet with surgery talks about it going perfectly, and feeling a hundred percent*. Players all report coming to camp “in the shape of thier lives”, or having “put on 15 pounds of muscle”. A weak into the season they are all bitching about how they were nursing injuries. Its just so worthless, it seems like we could just run a random glatitude generator and file the newspaper articles with that.
Sorry, pet peeve.

Assistant general manager David Forst said Barton’s injury started to surface late in the season, when he also dealt with minor groin issues, but Forst but said the hip was “not a factor at all” in Barton’s performance. …
Smith’s injury, Forst said, happened at home recently.
“Apparently, he was going to sit down and braced himself on a chair when he felt a pop,” Forst explained. "The doctors speculated that maybe he had a bone spur that became dislodged, so they went in and cleaned some things out.
“It was kind of a freak thing.”
Smith is expected to be out of action for six to eight weeks. Barton will be on crutches for six weeks, and the A’s are hopeful that he’ll be fully recovered in three months.

WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE HAVE SURGERY!!!
Barton, who batted .226 with nine homers, 47 RBIs and a .327 on-base percentage over 140 games, had surgery to repair a labral tear in his right hip.
I don’t know what “labral tear” means exactly, but that’s not surprising.
Why do you think it happened in KC? I don’t remember… did he take a few days off?
I wonder if Ryan is cast-free by now. He and Dale make quite the pair—cast, crutches, staples…
by whiteshoes40 on Oct 28, 2008 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
A labral tear is a tear of the labrum
which is a cartilage disc which surrounds the head of the ball bones in ball-and-socket joints (eg the shoulder and the hip).

I think the labrum is gooier than cartilage
which is what makes it difficult to repair — you can’t debride (sp?) it (shave off torn bits that are sticking out) or suture it like you can cartilage.

It was cold. He did the spits then could barely pull his ass off the ground. He limped back to the dugout, then limped back out to first. I had a pinched / irritated Ulnar nerve injury myself, similar to the one that affected Huston Street a couple of years ago. I must say, we read about some of the things these athletes go through day in and day out, with various ailments and we shrug it off as nothing many times. However, after experiencing my injury, I don’t know how some of these guys go out and do what they do for a living. I tip my hat off to these guys, and hope that BB hires a shaman / witch doctor for the coming season to rid the A’s of the injury curse:

As for Greg Smith’s injury, can we please come up with a term less hilarious-sounding than “loose bodies”? Is that the same thing as bone chips? What ARE these bodies? Does Smith have unborn twin fetuses growing on his elbow? Did aliens or gremlins invade his body? I want answers!

Smith told Bay Area News Group that a bone chip in his elbow occurred in high school but had never given him pain until this offseason. He first felt it, oddly, as he went to sit in a chair.
“A little scar tissue popped,” he said from Louisiana, where he makes his offseason home. “You know how you brace yourself, you put your hand on the arm of the chair. It just popped. Scar tissue happens like that. You can be doing anything and it will pop.”
