DLD 27 de Octubre del 2008
MORNING!!!!
It's Monday, October 27, 2008! While I SHOULD be celebrating the fact that my first class of the day was cancelled, I'm slightly annoyed because I'm locked out of my building and my room until my roommate gets out of class. So, that means you guys are stuck with me until then :]
October 27th is the 301st day of the year. There are 65 days remaining until the end of the year.
Today on this date... well, actually, today was a very violent day in the history of the world, so we'll disregard that tidbit.
Happy birthday to Erik Kloeker (American juggler), Brady Quinn (the next Aaron Rogers), Brad Radke (pitched clincher of ALDS 2006) and Kelly Osbourne ('nuff said).
Happy deathday to Joe Niekro, Princess Sophie von Hohenberg, and Rod Roddy.
Now that we've got all that out of the way...
How High School Musical Conquered the World
There may be someone on earth — a cloistered abbess, perhaps, or a Taliban soldier in a particularly remote post — who has yet to learn that High School Musical 3 opened last Friday. (It promptly leaped to the top of the box office, to the tune of a $42 million weekend take.) But it's a rare human who hasn't at least heard of the Disney tween hit, given the passion of its fans and the zeal of Disney's promotion. What began two years ago as a made-for-cable kids' movie about American teens playing basketball and putting on a show has mushroomed into a global phenomenon, with followers from Caracas to Cambodia and a breathtaking range of platforms: a stage show, a concert tour, reality shows, a book publishing series (50 million copies sold in 24 languages) and scores of tie-ins from breakfast cereals to Bible study guides.
I'm guilty of going to see High School Musical 3 this weekend... twice.
Rockies' Vizcaino arrested on suspicion of drunken driving
TAMPA (AP) — Colorado Rockies pitcher Luis Vizcaino is behind bars after police in Tampa say he was driving under the influence.
Vizcaino was arrested around 1:30 a.m. Monday. Officers said he was speeding in a 2009 Cadillac — 71 mph in a 45 mph zone — when they pulled him over.
Ovechkin to miss game to be with ill grandfather, report says
Alex Ovechkin's 203-game streak will end Tuesday as he misses at least one game to spend time with his ailing grandfather in Russia, the Washington Times reported Monday.
Ovechkin, who has missed only one game in his four-year career with theCapitals, will be replaced on the top line by Brooks Laich.
Men nabbed after playing 'chicken' with police car
Three Oklahoma City men were arrested after playing "chicken" with a police car. Police said a 23-year-old man drove his car at the oncoming patrol car driven by Capt. J.D. Reid and didn't move until Reid swerved out of the way. Reid then chased the car until it crashed. The driver was found inside the car, another 22-year-old man was found lying outside the vehicle and a third man was found hiding behind a traffic sign.
British pub-goers may buy their beer a new way
Britain's beloved pint may be facing a downsizing.
The office that sets measurement standards said Friday that its proposed two-thirds pint measure for draft beer and cider could be on tap as soon as April.
Proponents of the new glass size say they like it because it would give consumers more options at the bar.
The pint is so much a part of British life that it survived the European Union switch to half-liters. And there already is a half-pint glass for those who want a lighter lunch or a clearer head.
Supporters of the new-size glass hope it will appeal to female drinkers, who traditionally eschew a full pint.
"It's hard ordering a drink on a date," said Emma Ross, 28, a postgraduate student having a beer with lunch in a London pub. "If I order a half-pint, it's ladylike, but where's my sense of adventure? If I order a pint, I know how to have a good time, but I don't want to advertise it to every guy standing at the bar."
700-Pound Man Marries in Mexico
MONTERREY, Mexico (Oct. 27) - The world's heaviest man has tied the knot. Manuel Uribe, who hasn't left his bed in six years, married his longtime girlfriend Claudia Solis Sunday in northern Mexico. Wearing a white silk shirt with a sheet wrapped around his legs, Uribe smiled as Solis, 38, walked down a flight of stairs wearing a strapless ivory dress, a tiara and hot-pink lipstick. He later broke into tears as a notary declared the couple husband and wife in a civil ceremony attended by more than 400 guests. For the traditional first dance as newlyweds, Uribe and Solis held hands and swayed to a romantic ballad.
OH! And congratulations to Cupcakes :] He deserves a round of applause!

I really like musicals,
but I don’t want to pay $10 to see HSM3. And it’s one of those movies I don’t want to be seen seeing. So there’s my dilemma.
And yay for Joe!

ok, the 700lb dude is
the funniest, saddest, sickest, most inspiring story I have seen in a while. I simply don’t know how to react. I want to laugh at him, but don’t think it’s right. I want to feel bad for him, but can’t. I like that he is trying to lose weight, but I remember that he had to gain it in the first place. I want to be happy that he has found someone, but now I really wonder about my firends who say there isn’t anyone out there for them.
I think this one story may set my productivity back 5-10 hours this week. I’m scared to click on anything else.

Defensive projections from Chone:
These are based on 5 years of data from 2004-2008, weighted 1, .8, .6, .4, .2. The numbers are a combination of Stats ZR, Revised Zone rating, and Totalzone (which is not available for 2008). Instead of regressing these to a league average, the regression is to a run value derived from the Fan’s scouting report. The more a player has played, the more his rating is based on his stats. The less he has played, the more it is based on his scouting report.
http://lanaheimangelfan.blogspot.com/2008/10/defensive-projections.html
Barton: 1B: +4, 3B: -2
Ellis: +15
Pennington: 2B: -5, 3B: -5, SS: -12
Petit: 2B: +2, SS: -7
Patterson: -3
Crosby: +3
Hannahan: +5
Baisley: -7
OF (corner/center)
Buck: 5/-3
Cust: -11/-25
Cunningham: 4/-5
Davis: 12/7
Denorfia: 3/-5
PC: 14/9
Sweeney: 9/2
I think the projections for the newest guys are probably pretty worthless…

I would
like to see the A’s try Barton at 3B next season and focus on adding a 1B power bat if adding a legit bat is indeed the plan. The market for 3B is pretty thin, and Barton’s bat would play better at 3B. He handled first above our expectations this past season, and may excel at 3B as well. We are lacking depth at the hot corner, and by filling that position internally it would enable the A’s to add a bat at 1B without pushing Cust to the OF and taking a spot away from one of the youngsters.

Somebody wants to open a strip club just down the street from Safeco Field.
Take me out to the ballgame. Take me out with the crowd. And buy me a lap dance?
That’s what a proposed strip club could offer just south of Safeco Field.

It would be in the building at the right in this picture:

Saw this linked on Brew Crew Ball:
It seems that one of the candidates new general manager Jack Zduriencik had interest in, Ken Macha, may soon be off the market.
Zduriencik’s old team, the Milwaukee Brewers, appear to be closing in on hiring former Oakland manager Ken Macha. Doug Melvin, the Brewers’ GM, wanted to hire Macha back in 2002 before the A’s elevated him from bench coach to manager.
Macha and Zduriencik both are from the Pittsburgh area and go back a long way. If Macha was on the market, he would have had to have been considered one of the favorites in the managerial derby in Seattle.

Urban's mailbag: Mulder, Holliday, Cupcakes.
Sounds like AN.
Mulder, who remains close with several members of the organization, loved his time in the Bay Area, so he’d certainly be open to the idea under the right circumstances. But first things first. I got close to 100 e-mails about the possibility of Mulder returning, so I asked him last week, via text message, if I could chat about it with him.
He politely declined an interview, and in doing so, texted back that he won’t even consider signing anywhere until he’s physically able to pitch the way he’s capable of pitching.

text messaging is good for talking during church ; - ) and other such quiet events
as long as your phone is on silent. Like Sunday my wife stayed home sick so i sent her a text during church to see how she was feeling and if she needed anything brought home afterwards.
it lets the recepient respond when they have time instead of interrupting whatever they are doing.
its faster to read a text than to call your voicemail and wait for the lady to stop talking and just get to the message.
it helps you avoid calling those people that just talk and talk when you just want one answer.
it’s also a chance to send people smiley and frowny faces : – )
come to think of it, maybe all those reasons are why sports people do it.

I text at Church too.
God never answers.
But seriously, texting your wife to see how she is feeling? That’s worthy of an “awwww”.

I think I'm going to channel all my heated arguments through text messaging
That way I won’t raise my voice, and I’ll be too frustrated with not understanding how to text to be able to actually say anything damaging

Why?
It’s quick, eliminates the need for time consuming formalities and is less intrusive than a phone call …

Ah, those pesky time-consuming formalities
Less intrusive, sure. Less scary, too.
A less obvious attraction of texting is that it uses a telephone to avoid what many people dread about face-to-face exchanges, and even about telephones — having to have a real, unscripted conversation. People don’t like to have to perform the amount of self-presentation that is required in a personal encounter.
Hard to overstate the impact of physicality (and physical confidence) on communication.
It’s a lot easier to affect stridence or bravery or antipathy (or even generosity of spirit) at an electronic remove that feels immediate but isn’t. Text and email erode inhibition, whereas there is something about being in a room with a person that mandates a certain caution. The stakes are higher, and the intoxication of insulation is gone. This is why shrill co-workers WHO USES ALL CAPS IN EMAILS TO LET YOU KNOW HOW STUPID YOU ARE!!! invariably turn out to be surprisingly reasonable in person.
Anyway.
Specific advantages (e.g. talking during church) aside, it seems to me that texting is symptomatic of a harried brevity that has come to infect nearly all aspects of socialization, and demands obeisance from language.
Text-speak isn’t relegated to texting, is what I’m trying to say. Blog comment threads and email interactions (even in professional environments) reflect the vernacular of texting. And if you’ve ever worked for a large corporation, you know that people talk this way as well – everything is an acronym, shorthand, jargonistic (and often accompanied by the facial expression equivalent of “:)”).
I find this inexorable march towards the full spectrum takeover of partially encoded half-thoughts to be quite alienating, actually. But I gather I am in the minority on that.

1. I think you are probably the exception, not the rule. But I could be wrong.
2. You just called a lot of people stupid.
3. The pervasiveness of impatience, and its impact on language/interaction generally, is what I’m trying (perhaps not so lucidly) to get at. Text is but one manifestation of that.

1. Not really a shocking development that you and your friends are similar.
2. You’re missing the point I’m trying to make in #3. But I’m prepared to take the blame for that. If I was a different person reading what I wrote, I might not know what the hell I was trying to say either.

I will be glued to the screen in like 5 weeks, when I finally catch up.
I had a friend finally use enough peer pressure to get me to start watching recently. I am now about halfway through season 4 and have all of this season saved up on DVR (every fan I know has told me I must watch all the way through and not skip ahead).
