Gallego named Third Base/Infield Coach
"The Oakland Athletics today named Mike Gallego as their third base coach, which completes Manager Bob Geren's coaching staff for the upcoming 2009 season.
Gallego, a member of the A's 1989 World Series championship team who played eight seasons in Oakland, will join Ty Van Burkleo (hitting), Ron Romanick (bullpen), Don Wakamatsu (bench), Tye Waller (first base) and Curt Young (pitching) on Geren's staff."
Seems like a good choice since we lacked a true infield coach last year and the article says that he improved Colorado's infield D a lot during his tenure there. He could serve as a good instructor for our young infielders like Patterson, Pennington, and Staple-Dome. If anything it's news in a newsless day and since there's no DLD here ya go.
This one has quotes directly from Gallego and updates on TV and radio coverage. KICU (Channel 6) has been dropped and there's no word yet if they have to change radio stations.

I love this move!
Total nostalgia setting in. Everybody loved Gallego.
More than just ANtics: http://www.louisgray.com/live/
Not me.
And I can’t really explain why, but I never liked the guy.
I’ll get over it if he’s a good coach, though.

I'm the opposite,
I never really knew why, but he was always one of my favorite players.
Ellis for President
Gags was my sister's favorite player
I still remember the clubhouse tour we took one year, where they showed Gag Man’s Ladder, the step stool that Gallego needed to use in order to reach the top shelf of his locker.

My mom's too ...
she liked him because they’re both short …

now get Carney back so I don’t have to see him in the black and orange.
I love this move. Now we just need a radio station, a TV deal, a new stadium…

And while we're at it, can we have the A's bring back this promotion?

Just thought it would be nice, for nostalgia’s sake.
I'm here to talk about the past.
They always employ promotions like these...

what's going on out on the field??
Was it time to “run the bases”??
Maybe they shot a blast of hundreds of wadded-up five dollar bills onto the field? Well, maybe not, or the rest of grandstands would’ve emptied.
Officially awaiting the 2009 season.

Loved Gallego. . . . .
Great move, Billy. Just need Rickey on the team as a special instructor for running the bags, whipping your glove after a routine catch, pullin’ shirt sleeve after HR, and talking in 3rd person.
"RIP: UserID: 553"
Mike Urban called it...
he said in a mailbag that the probable reason Tony De Francesco was reassigned was more because they needed an infield coach, especially with all the new guys. He said that he guessed the next hire was for and infield minded coach, and he was right.

This is good
1. I like Gallego.
2. Why do we need an IF coach? To teach Barton 3B, and to train our new non-Crosby SS!
The A's colors are green and gold.
all aboard the Barton-to-third bandwagon!

I wonder what Crosby's Halloween costume will be?
I bet in a new fan-post we could get some interesting answers???
I will go first and say he will go as an actual “baseball player” because it sure doesn’t seem like he is one currently….
Maybe the cowardly lion?

this is why I love Gallego
“I’m very happy to be back,” Gallego said Wednesday. “I always thought I looked a little taller in those white shoes.”
"The Athletics at Fremont" is soooooooo bad
I really hope Beane isn't bringing back these former A's just for the sake of doing it
I want the A’s to have the best possible coaches, not the best possible coaches who happened to play for Oakland once upon a time. I have no idea if Gallego is any good at what he does, but I really couldn’t care less what teams he played for. I never really understood that logic. Here in Chicago everybody wants the Bears coaches to be the ’85 Bears players, and it makes no sense to hire them based on that.

Beane hires one ex-A
and you think he’s starting a trend? I’m sure Gallego is perfectly qualified for the job, Beane’s not an idiot (begin argument here).

obviously, re-hiring Canseco as a driving coach didn't work out so well with Loaiza

It's not so much him starting a trend
As people here getting excited about it because he used to be on the A’s. I guess it’s cool to have an old player back in uniform, but I think the focus should be on whether he can replace Ron Washington.
by thejd44 on Oct 24, 2008 12:31 AM PDT up reply actions
True
But I think the focus should initially be on whether he can replace Defrancesco, then if he passes that test move on to Wash. Although I truly doubt we’ll ever find someone as good as Wash.

Beane doing something for the sake of doing it?
I’m no expert but it doesn’t sound like something he would do.
I'm here to talk about the past.
no one cares about the TV and radio stuff mentioned in SuSlu's article?
I really hope the A’s and Giants don’t have to split all their televised games on Comcast Sports Net. turning to channel 410 is annoying.

He's no Wash but short of that I love this move
Let’s see what he can do with all the young middle infielders. Barton to 3B is a great idea as long as you get some one of impact, (A. Huff, A. Gonzalez) for 1B.
He might be Wash if he mentored Tulowitzki

It’s almost enough to make me wish Giambi would come back so he kick that elf’s ass for the stuff he pulled on Jason back in ’95.
