Gallego named Third Base/Infield Coach
"The Oakland Athletics today named Mike Gallego as their third base coach, which completes Manager Bob Geren's coaching staff for the upcoming 2009 season.
Gallego, a member of the A's 1989 World Series championship team who played eight seasons in Oakland, will join Ty Van Burkleo (hitting), Ron Romanick (bullpen), Don Wakamatsu (bench), Tye Waller (first base) and Curt Young (pitching) on Geren's staff."
Seems like a good choice since we lacked a true infield coach last year and the article says that he improved Colorado's infield D a lot during his tenure there. He could serve as a good instructor for our young infielders like Patterson, Pennington, and Staple-Dome. If anything it's news in a newsless day and since there's no DLD here ya go.
This one has quotes directly from Gallego and updates on TV and radio coverage. KICU (Channel 6) has been dropped and there's no word yet if they have to change radio stations.

Not me.
And I can’t really explain why, but I never liked the guy.
I’ll get over it if he’s a good coach, though.

Gags was my sister's favorite player
I still remember the clubhouse tour we took one year, where they showed Gag Man’s Ladder, the step stool that Gallego needed to use in order to reach the top shelf of his locker.

Mike Urban called it...
he said in a mailbag that the probable reason Tony De Francesco was reassigned was more because they needed an infield coach, especially with all the new guys. He said that he guessed the next hire was for and infield minded coach, and he was right.

I really hope Beane isn't bringing back these former A's just for the sake of doing it
I want the A’s to have the best possible coaches, not the best possible coaches who happened to play for Oakland once upon a time. I have no idea if Gallego is any good at what he does, but I really couldn’t care less what teams he played for. I never really understood that logic. Here in Chicago everybody wants the Bears coaches to be the ’85 Bears players, and it makes no sense to hire them based on that.

Beane hires one ex-A
and you think he’s starting a trend? I’m sure Gallego is perfectly qualified for the job, Beane’s not an idiot (begin argument here).

It's not so much him starting a trend
As people here getting excited about it because he used to be on the A’s. I guess it’s cool to have an old player back in uniform, but I think the focus should be on whether he can replace Ron Washington.

True
But I think the focus should initially be on whether he can replace Defrancesco, then if he passes that test move on to Wash. Although I truly doubt we’ll ever find someone as good as Wash.
