OT Question for Gamers: XBox 360 or PS3?

So I've been an owner of the PS and PS2.  When the PS3 came out I refused to spend so much $$ for a gaming system and have been sucking it up and using my PS2.  Problem is I'm ready for a next gen console and it appears that the PS3, while getting a bit cheaper, probably won't drop in price anytime soon.  In the meantime, Microsoft has come out with an XBox 360 arcade version that sells for only $200.  So I have a few questions for those of you in the know, so that you may help me decide which system to get: in other words, spend the $200 on the XBox, splurge on the PS3, or wait it out some more.

My gaming interests are as follows: I like the multiplatform sports games (Baseball, College Football, Soccer, Hockey) and like role playing stuff, most notably the Grand Theft Auto series (GTA IV did not come out for the PS2).  All I will use the system for is gaming.  So even though I know the PS3 has won the DVD battle with XBox by virtue of Blu Ray, I'm not going to switch to buying Blu Ray discs and wouldn't want to burn out my PS3 with Blu Ray playing anyway.  I also am not a big fan of an online gaming and do not plan on using this feature for either system.  I've heard that most multiplatform games play better on XBox than on the PS3 b/c developers develop for the XBox first and make adjustments for the PS3.  I've also heard that as of now XBox graphics are better but that eventually some game developer will exploit all the PS3 potential. Are either of these claims true?

So I would greatly appreciate any feedback from those of you who know. Thanks in advance.

P.S. Not a big fan of the Wii so that's not an option for me.

Get the 360, but don't get the $200 version.

It’s very, VERY scaled down. No hard drive, only 256mb of internal memory.

Translation: You’re not going to be able to save very much stuff onto it, or download game demos, or update games to play on Xbox live, etc etc.

I have both the 360 and the Wii, and I’ll probably add a PS3 in the next year or so once I’ve gotten around to the “TV Room” area of the home remodel. The PS3 will serve as the bluray player as well as game machine.

Don’t discount the Wii, either. For games that you can just pick up, play, and not worry about spending tons of time on, it’s absolutely awesome.

Thanks . .

But what is Xbox Live? (I know, dumb question)

And if I pay extra for the hard drive, how much more is that and does that favor spending more to get the PS3? In other words, is there a certain price that the Xbox is a better valueat, or is it your opinion that (as an example) what you get for $350 on an Xbox is better that what you get for $350 on a PS3?

Xbox Live = the online xbox network.

it lets you play, say, Madden Football 2009 against somebody else over the internet. You can also download game demos (pretty slick, actually, because you can try games out before you buy them), etc

As far as “better” I guess it depends on your definition of the word. Hardware wise, they’re pretty much both really, really good systems. I don’t know off the top of my head, but I think that the 360 has the edge as far as number of games and number of gamers online, but the PS3 is catching up.

Really, you can’t go wrong with either.

Playing sports games on line is actually pretty cool and a good guage

as to how skilled you are relative to others. There is no trash talking and it is fun playing against another human. Don’t knock it till you try it.

BTW, I am a 30 year old.

Hey Swish,

Not sure you got to see my response to your comments on the Longshore v. Riley discussion on CGB. I wasn’t mocking you, so hopefully you saw my follow up to that. Check it out if you haven’t.

Oaktown...it's cool. I didn't go back and read any comments.

I’ve been put off by the CGB community and have made it a new policy to peruse the site quickly and look for interesting articles and try to ignore any of the comments or attempt to engage in “conversation.” It’s really been a frustrating experience over there and a “waste” of time for lack of a better word. Nothing personal, but I think my time can be better used elsewhere – ie, work. That being said, go bears.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no

Every now and then, you have little kids who talk way to much just to annoy you on purpose, but just the same there are times where you play some really cool gamers who make the experience a lot better because of the sportsmanship and friendly competition they bring. It’s all over the spectrum, really, and the spread varies over the time of day (i.e. school nights you get less kids, early morning you have a lot of Europeans/Asians and some East Coast gamers).

And yeah, like mikev points out below, you can cut out on all the good and bad parts of the online community by just not using the headset or muting chat functions.

I’ll just leave it at that until you experience the gaming online.

What if, like me, somebody absolutely hates playing any video game against another person?

I like competing in real things, but I really, really don’t get any satisfaction about playing against (or, really, with) others. I’ve never liked playing people in Madden or any other game.

For me a video game is a way to lose myself in something outside of reality for a while. It’s a way to take some time for myself. I really just don’t want other people involved in that.

Online stuff is great for updates and the like, but as far as the “online community” of people I really could not care less.

Well, for starters, most of the games I play are 1 player anyway

But it really has nothing to do with winning. I play real sports to try to beat people. Taking a video game too seriously completely defeats the purpose for me.

I can understand that

Just don’t ever cross the line. Once you start playing against other people, off-line games seem to lose a large part of the point.

I disagree.

There’s room for both.

I like tossing in COD4 or Halo3 or something and mindlessly blasting people online, but I ALSO like playing Forza2 or NCAA Football or Tiger Woods 09 offline and trying to actually complete the game or build a dynasty or whatever.

by mikev on Oct 23, 2008 9:05 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps

I just find myself doing really well on a single player game and having a “who cares” feeling. Doing really well in a multiplayer game ensures that someone out there cares at least a little.

The thing is though,

usually with a multiplayer game, it is very different than the game that you played by yourself. It can be very fun, I guess if that is what you don’t like, but you should try it.

by mattman on Oct 24, 2008 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Then you shouldn't play online,

if you have tried it and don’t like it, I guess you know what is best for you. I’m still really surprised you don’t enjoy it, there are games though that you are not really competing solely against one other player.

Question about that Arcade model

My 360 just crapped the bed (red light, and all that), and I was thinking about picking up another one (the one I have now I bought used and thus do not have the warranty from Microsoft). Will the memory kajigger I have now plug in to the Arcade ’Box?

Ryan Sweeney: I probably irrationally embraced him before you did.

by Joey C. on Oct 25, 2008 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes it will

“Arcade” is just a 360 without a HD packaged with it. It’ll work fine, although your previously downloaded files will only work when the Gamertag that d/led it originally is signed in. The DRM (digital rights media) rules suck.

If you’re the only user of the 360, though, with only 1 Gamertag, then it’s no issue.

Definitely get an XBOX

You can’t go wrong with getting the XBOX. The New Xbox Experience comes out on Nov. 19th and it’s going to completely take the current system over the top. Also, it is going to require a storage device. If you do purchase the Arcade model, Xbox will sell you a refubished 20 GB hard drive or a 256MB storage unit for $20. If I were buying one now, I would just get the 60 GB Pro model for $249.

I’ve had mine since lauch and despite suffering 2 Red Ring of Death meltdowns I am still very happy. The replacement by Microsoft was very smooth. I haven’t heard much about recent problems so they may have there hardware problems under control.

XBOX LIVE is a must. There are 2 subscription options available. The Gold membership ($49/year I think) gives you complete access to all downloadable material and Multiplayer gameplay over Live. The Silver membership does not allow you play multiplayer games and some of the downloadables are not available as soon as they are for the Gold members. Silver does give you voice chat with other members and all the other bells and whistles.

I hope this helps.

It's a toss-up

I personally have a PS3, but I think it’s a toss-up. As previously mentioned, the 360 has a bigger lineup of games, but the PS3 has the (as-yet unrealized) “potential” for better graphics.
If you don’t ever plan on moving up to blu-ray, then you can safely ignore that aspect that the PS3 brings to the table. But if you are planning on it someday, most people do regard it as the best BR player on the market.
I think you’ve got to evaluate which games you love playing the most. While you can access most cross-platform (i.e. Madden), some will be platform specific (i.e. Gran Turismo). I think the best baseball game last year was MLB 08: The Show – by leaps and bounds. This game happened to be a sony product, and so it was PS3 only. Sure I could have played some of the other baseball games, but I was happy I had the PS3 so I could play MLB 08.

Both good choices

I am not an expert but I was in a pretty similar situation when I bought a 360 almost a year ago. I had PS1 and PS2 and wanted to go next gen but wasn’t willing splash the cash for a PS3. I have to say I am happy with my purchase even before the recent XBox price drop.

If you really are not concerned with Blu-Ray or online play than I think the 360 is probably the way to go, save some money and put it towards games of which xbox has the wider selection. I would just say you might want to think twice before writing of those features, especially the online play. A friend recently purchased a PS3 on the strength of the blu-ray and he has got really caught up in the online feature which is free from sony. You might be surprised at the extra dimension it adds to your games. Xbox will give you a more active online community but you have to pay for it, PS3 lets you get right into it.

by DiegoAsFan on Oct 22, 2008 12:49 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Xbox for sure

For the simple fact that PS3 games cannot even compete against Xbox games. Also, Xbox Live is a must for any gamer even if you say you don’t intend on using the online feature. Try it and you’ll love it, I guarantee it. I have friends who have both consoles and they barely even use the PS3, favoring the 360 instead. I don’t foresee any reason to own the PS3 other than the Blu-Ray player and the “promise” of better graphics. The whole graphics argument is sort of mute since supposedly the Xbox still has untapped potential as well.

For what it's worth

the PS3 hardware is most definitely superior. The problem is that as of now, it’s not being utilized. Game companies aren’t even using most of the disc space. If they ever do, the comps between the PS3 and XBox 360 would be like comparing the PS2 to the SNES. It’s not just a graphics issue, either. It’s size of games, overall performance, etc.

All the arguments here center around XBox Live, but if you’re like me and prefer video games to be a solo experience, I don’t really see what the XBox has to offer over the PS3. When I can afford a next gen system, I’ll absolutely go with the PS3.

by thejd44 on Oct 22, 2008 1:45 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It all depends on your gaming preference

I love RPGs, and for now, 360’s the system to beat. It just seems like there’s so much more good software for the Xbox.

As for the PS2-NES comparison, I’d have to disagree. We’re getting to a point where everything’s so close to reality that we’ll likely never see a NES-PS2 type jump.

I have all three:

Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii, and not to mention a PC capable of playing video games.

If you’re looking for sheer firepower, the PS3 dominates over the Xbox360. Sure, video games don’t utilize the potential of ps3’s hardware, but you better believe that once developers start to tap into the ps3’s potential, the video games will be far superior on the ps3. Just for comparison sake, if I remember correctly, the PS3 uses Blu-ray discs, and the X360 uses DVDs for their games. In terms of space available per disc, PS3 > X360

You mentioned that online gaming is not something you’re worried about right now. I would honestly consider online gaming an option, especially if you plan to play sports games. X360 has Xbox Live, a service that costs as little as 40$ a year, which provides you with not only an ORGANIZED medium to connect w/ other users to play games, but gives you exclusive content for updates to certain video games. PS3 has a friend/buddy system, but you must utilize the in-game multiplayer system to set-up a multi-player game. On Xbox360 Live, setting up a multiplayer game is as easy as opening up your “buddy list” and inviting your friend to play a game.

pardon me if my sentences start running together at this point.

Both the X360 and the PS3 pretty much have the same games out at the same time. Some people actually argue that when comparing screen shots between the Xbox360 and the PS3, the Xbox 360 has slightly brighter and sharper pictures, while the PS3 looks a little blurrier. See comparisons of GTA4 on 360 and PS3 here

While there are many games that come out for both platforms, the deciding factor would have to be exclusive content. Check out games for the PS3: Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4, and games for the X360: Gears of War 2, Viva Pinata

Now, after boring you with words words words, let me bold what I think:

My PS3 right now only plays Blu-Ray/DVD movies. I don’t play video games that often on the PS3, and if I had a choice, I would rather buy a game and play it for the X360. I was never a big Multiplayer game fan, and X360 made me turn a corner. PS3 has nice graphics and all, but I’m still partial to the 360

PS3 development is a lot harder (blu-ray being new tech)

So it’ll be a few years before they’ll finally get the hang of it and REALLY utiliize all that potential…for now, games are going to be on-par with the 360. That, and being able to throw a whole lot more movies/CGI cutscenes to fill in the blu-ray (I’ve heard Metal Gear Solid 4’s ending cut scene is a good 25+ minutes worth).

I see the PS3 as a late bloomer, personally. Nowadays, money talks, so those “exclusives” aren’t really such, which is why you see games like GTA and Devil May Cry on the 360. There is talk that MGS 4 will eventually make it’s way on the 360 as well (or as the rumor mill goes). The only exclusives are anything produced in-house (i.e. as mentioned, MLB the Show and Gran Turismo are Sony, while Halo is Microsoft). Once the PS3 is finally tapped to it’s full potential, however, that’s when it’ll really shine since the 360 doesn’t have as much “space” to work with on it’s games (unless they start doing firmware and HD-installation support to match up). Of course, by that time you’ll be hearing about the PS4, Xbox Sphere, and Wii HD (curse these 5-6 year cycles)

Personal experience, I wasn’t a “online player” either until I got a 360. Unlike some, however, I mainly do so to play with my friends, so it generally means FPS like Call of Duty and Halo 3 or some RPGs since we can do so on the same side. Others do it to have a different experience each time when they play Madden, since they get matched up with someone new. While you may choose to remain un-connected in the end, I would say you’re missing in on the fun.

Overall gaming, I’d say the 360 has more to offer right now and while there’s a yearly fee, the XBox Live system is definitely a lot easier to use than the PS3’s online community. I also chose the 360 because more of my friends have it, meaning there’s more people I can play with. As of this moment, a combination of $$$, few friends having one, and no exclusive that I deem a “must have” is the reason why I don’t have a PS3.

And for the record, I have a Wii as well.

It is a tribute to this community...

… that this didn’t end up in a nasty, over-the-top flame war right away.

I’d go xBox too – at this point there are very few games that would be of interest on the PS3 that aren’t also available for the xBox, but there are several games for xBox that aren’t available for the PS3 (Halo being a primary example).

On the other hand, one thing to consider is that the PS3 should be able to play your old PS2 games, so if you have a heavy investment in those games, and you want to continue playing them, you might want to stick with the PlayStation line. I had the opposite issue (plenty of older xBox games that I wanted to continue having the option to play).

Backwards compatibility is always a mental factor,

but really how many of us have gone back to play an older gen game on a new gen console (pacman and galaga aside)? I always think it’s a cool feature but not once have I played a PS game on my PS2.

And I’d like to repeat my thanks to all of you. This discussion has been and continues to be very helpful. I’m 95% sure I’m going for the Xbox.

Sadly, it depends on what model of PS3

The newer models they’ve released are NOT backwards compatible at all. The original 60 GB at launch had a PS2 chip inside, then they deemed that too expensive so the 80 GB (chrome trim finish) that replaced it uses software emulation (meaning some PS and PS2 games have issues playing, or can’t play at all).

Now the new 80 GB (grey trim) and 120 GB models do NOT play PS2 games at all. All the models that have backwards compatiblity are all out of production.

So in closing, keep that PS2 if you still want to play your PS2

Yeah Sony in all its wisdom

Removed the engine from the PS3 that ran PS2 games. That’s why I bought a 60GB PS3 before they stopped selling them. I wanted to be able to play God of War and God of War 2 on my PS3.

BTW you might want to consider the next batch of games

that are going to be coming out for the Xbox, especially the ones with paltry storage capacity. Just FYI I have a Wii, PS3 myself but mosty play online gaming with my PC.

Rockstar: GTA V Could Be Too Large for Xbox 360 Rockstar co-founder Sam (no, not Dan) Houser doesn’t know if the next Grand Theft Auto title after IV will properly fit onto the 360’s standard-sized discs. “One of the problems with the 360, and it affects games like Grand Theft Auto if you think about how much content we put in the actual machine, is the fact that they don’t have a significantly larger storage medium than the previous systems. It’s a slightly bigger DVD disc,” Houser told 1up. Then take into account that not all Xbox 360s come with a hard drive. It’s here that things get super sticky. “The 360 is going to have to get ‘round this issue we’re talking about…hopefully, they’re going to adopt one of those in the next year or so, because it’s going to become more of an issue. If we’re filling up the disc right now, where are we going? It’s not like our games are going to get any smaller.” The delay heard round the world was mostly credited to technical issues during IV’s development. Some said the 360 didn’t have enough space to hold the game; others heard that the PS3 version was having big problems of its own. Whatever the case, Houser isn’t telling. “Both machines are absolutely fantastic, but they both come with strengths and weaknesses. The strength of the 360 is a very, very accessible, familiar, effective environment to work in. You’re making the game from the get-go, everyone understands its PC environment — boom, off we go. It’s pretty good.” Development on the PS3 version wasn’t too smooth early on, however. “I think it was challenging for a lot of companies, but it’s also a machine where, now that we’ve got comfortable with it — I don’t want to say we’ve cracked it, but we’ve got comfortable with it — we know we can make our games.” Many have posed a big question that’s on my mind, for sure: Does either version look better than the other? “There’s a slight difference in the way they look,” Houser admitted. “I think that’s to do with really low-level technical stuff that I’m not the guy to explain. The 360 games have a certain look to them; PS3 games have a certain look to them. I like the way [the PS3] renders.” He concluded, “There’s a certain kind of softness without being blurry — some warmth to it — and then there’s a certain more clinical element to how the 360 looks.”

Oh wow - you just made me uncertain all over again . . .

Does the Xbox360 “solve” this problem by the use of a hard drive (which I’m convinced I have to get)? Or is he saying that even with a hard drive, the game won’t fit right on Xbox?

From what I've heard

In November, there will be a system upgrade to the Xbox 360 which will supposedly “download” portions of the game into the hard drive to cut lag times. Thats part of the reason why the Xbox Arcade and Core owners are being offered HDD and why the Xbox360s are getting 60gb hard drives, and the elites have 120gb hard drives.

i don’t see it being impossble that Rockstar downloads portions of the game into the hard drive and still runs off the DVD.

To tell you the truth, my concern at this point is, while you’re deciding between the PS3 and the Xbox 360, the Xbox 720 and the PS4 are being developed as we speak haha

You won't have to worry about this for a while

Don’t assume GTA V will be coming any time before 2011. Open world games take forever in development. And if GTA is to your liking, the 360 has paid for exclusive content they will be receiving that will never come to PS3. So you will improve your GTA IV experience on 360 and 360 alone, if you want more GTA IV. Myself, I’m kind of done with the GTA games at this point. The high point in that series was GTA Vice City because of the vibe it had.

Rings of death

I also want to buy a console, I have an old XBox and I was conviced about the 360 but I heard about the “rings of death” and that thing scares me….

I thought they dealt with that issue. Is it still happening?

it still happens

but i believe that the frequency has decreased since they made the processors thinner.

The RRoD is widely publicized, especially because lets face it, people hate microsoft.

If you search though, you’ll see a lot of overheating issues with the PS3, especially hard drive malfunctions.

Whichever way you go, though, Microsoft and Sony have you covered (should) in the Warranty side of things

the Red Rings of Death (RRoD)

it was a malfunction within the Xbox 360 that affected almost every system at one point or another. People believed it was a design flaw based on the overheating of the xbox. The heat could has possibly caused certain parts to expand and warp (this is just one theory) and because there wasn’t an adequate “cooling measure” the system would fail. Microsoft has been releasing new versions with thinner processors, more advanced heatsinks etc, and has upgraded the warranty on their system to help those who purchased the system earlier by increasing the window you have to return (from like…1 year to 3 years)

Rings of death don't sound like much fun.

I have a PS2 and an Xbox, and those are just fine by me. They’re really sturdy, and have survived the onslaught of killer cousins. I was thinking about buying the PS3, but I never thought about the Xbox360, because of all the stories about how fragile they are. anything even slightly “fragile” would not survive a week at my house. I still might get the PS3, but the 360 is out of the question.

The PS3

is on the up and up. Its a heavy piece of machinery, so i’m never worried about it falling or budging. the DVD/Blu-ray drive isn’t one of those DVD-Tray things, so the less moving parts the better. But you know that sinces a beast in terms of size, its gonna be pretty warm too. I haven’t had a problem with overheating (and i watch movies on it all day).

I guarantee that no matter what you buy you won’t be disappointed, and you really wont’ be disappointed w/ the PS3

Oh, and if you pick up a PS3

make sure you get the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle. Its the 80gb hard drive w/ backwards compatibility, and it comes with the Dual Shock 3 controller + Metal Gear Solid 4. you won’t be disappointed

The RRoD has been over-exaggerated to an extent

It was bad at first, but after a couple lawsuits and investigations, Microsoft has really ramped up quality control and service early this year. Now all systems, like any kind of electronics, is doomed to death eventually, but the newer batches that MS is putting out is sounder than before. Under normal usage, you should be fine, but if you’re one of those gamers who play 10 hours nonstop each day, you’re going to be more prone to a RRoD.

Small sample size, I have a friend who’s gone thru 3 RRoD’s (but he’s one of those who plays 10+ hours a day), and another friend who’s still got his launch system working great, so take that as you will.

Also, that first friend is also on his 2nd PS3, because it crapped out too. It’s like Dusty Baker with a pitcher, essentially. Even Tim Wakefield would lose his arm in that situation. Moderation, people!

I've got a PS3 and love it. For me it wasn't even a close decision.

I tried out both consoles, thanks to friends of mine, and did a lot of reading about both and one of the things that sold me was the room for growth the PS3. A lot of untapped potential there and you’ve got to love that as someone that’s about to put down some serious money on a gaming system that you will own for years and years. And honestly, I trust Sony more than I do Microsoft. Microsoft is notorious for putting ‘unfinished’ products out on to the market and I rarely if ever have a problem with Sony products.
Both systems are very close as to what they can do, so I’d rather spend more for the one that will continue to improve. But that’s just me.

the nice thing about the PS3

is a friend of mine can some how play PC games on his PS3. He’s been playing Gears of War PC on his wide screen through his PC and PS3. pretty neat if you ask me, and barring sony crippling some features, that puts A LOT of potential for the average user

This is called "hacking" or "modding" the system

Doable for the 360 as well, just that Microsoft is more “on top of things” when it comes to messing with the system, so if you have a modded system connect online to XBox Live, it’ll essentially do what the A’s training staff has done to the players the past couple years – with the exception that no amount of rehab will fix it.

But hey, if you play single player and local multiplayer and never go online, that’s not an issue for you.

I prefer PS3 By far

Well for me, I don’t like microsoft’s business practices. But also I love my PS2 and enjoy being able to play backwards compatable games on the PS3 too. Also I’m enjoying Disgaea 3 and preparing to enjoy Eternal Sonata and Valkryia Chronicles. Plus I like having FREE online access instead of Microsoft’s pay service. I think PS3 is definitely catching up and by next year, it’ll be a dead heat in terms of games.

If you get a PS3 Get a copy of MLB: The Show

You get to create a player and the game just fast forwards to your next at bat, or when the ball is going to get hit to you, so the focus can be just on your player. It’s so addicting building up your player through Midland, then Sac, and finally into Oakland.

Oh and one more thing, make sure to turn the commentary off. Unfortunately, they have Rex Hudler doing the “color commentary” …ugh!

Xbox 360 all the way

The library of games is 1,000 times better than the PS3 right now especially if you like RPG and shooters, you’ve got games like Mass Effect, Fable 2, Gears of War/Gears of War 2 and Halo 3. And Call of Duty 4 (one of the best shooters ever) is a lot better on 360 than PS3. I own both consoles and I would say that I play the 360 90 percent more frequently than the PS3 (I had Call of Duty 4 on both so that’s why I know that). The online community is great and the concept of achievements is really cool on 360. Someone said earlier to not get the $200 one and they’re right. Definitely get the $300 version. You’ll be very happy you did.

The main reason I use my PS3 is to watch movies.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Oct 24, 2008 8:26 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The other thing

and this may not be the same for you, but I love the 360 controller SOOOO much more than the PS3 one. I can’t stand playing shooters on the PS3 controller. It just doesn’t feel right with their mushy triggers, so they often map the shooting to the shoulder buttons which feels weird within itself.

We should totally set up a AN gaming day

or a shoot-out, rather, since most of us probably have a popular FPS like CoD, Halo, or Gears. That might be fun…

Mass Effect rules...

if you like RPGs, it is an amazing option – I blew way to many hours of my life on that game, and I’ll probably do it again when the sequel hits. Plus, the story was really impressive…

Bluray player, free online play, and it has the best MLB game out there. Being you’re on this blog, i’m sure that’ll be important to you. Sony’s MLB series is by far the superior baseball game on the market….

XBOX 360 for sure

One thing I haven’t seen anyone mention about the 360 is it’s ability to work as a media extender.

With my windows vista PC (also works with XP after a free software download), I can play all of my PC music through my stereo through my PC. I can even have it playing during games. Perfect for playing Tiger with a group of friends. You get all the sound effects and background music of your choice.

This also allows you to see pictures, videos on your TV through the 360.

It is a great feature and one of the main reasons that I went XBOX 360 over PS3. It just works so great in conjunction with you home computer!!

What genres do you like?

RPGs, action, adventure, fighting, etc? Knowing what you like makes it easier to make suggestions.

Also, there is always XBL Arcade, where you can download (for a cost) other games as well. They won’t be as indepth or “next gen” as the games you’d typically buy off the self, but there’s a wide range of games to choose from there. Like Castle Crashers, a very fun side-scrolling game where you and up to 3 other friends run thru a castle and hack at everything you see (and solve puzzles).

You'll want to turn off the music for most XBLA games, including Castle Crashers

They can make the games look so good, but can’t find someone to write a decent soundtrack. What’s up with that?

Procrastinators unite....tomorrow

by muffinpryde on Oct 28, 2008 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hear Assault Heroes is good

Haven’t tried it myself. So far on XBLA I’ve only got a couple RPGs and some remakes of classic games (like Battlefield 1942 and Bionic Commando).

As to regular 360 games, I’d recommend any of the LEGO games (Star Wars, Batman, or Indiana Jones). I also suggest having a friend along for the adventure, though. The new Spidey is a good action game, as is the Tomb Raider: Legend game.

Sports-wise I’ll have to defer to others, since the only one I have is baseball (not much of a fan of the other sports, video-game wise).

they all have free trial versions so you might as well try them.

Netflix subscribers / movie lovers

link

It’s something you can’t get on the Roku. Nor on LG’s BD300. Nor on Samsung’s P2500 / P2550 Blu-ray players. Nor through Netflix’s own “Watch Instantly” portal. It’s high-def Netflix streaming, and it’s coming first to Microsoft’s Xbox 360. Yes friends, when the all new dashboard hits on November 19th, with it will come HD Netflix streaming for Xbox Live Gold members. You should know that this is only a “soft launch” with about 300 titles available for now, and the litany of details you’re surely craving simply aren’t available at present time. At any rate, we’d say things just got a lot more interesting in the world of digital downloads, but there’s really no need. The real question is: when will everyone else follow suit, and how quickly can we expect current Netflix streamers to get the HD upgrade?
