Ellis to sign multi-year deal
According to ESPN, Mark Ellis has agreed to a multi year deal to re-sign with Oakland!
Mark Ellis, back in green and gold... I was personally worried about losing his defense, he is STILL underrated in my opinion.
How do YOU feel about retaining Mark Ellis to a multi year deal? Happy about this? Sad about this? What is the alternative? (I'm adding words here to make it 75! Ha)

This makes me soooo happy!
I was terrified the A’s would let Ellis slip away.

at this point I am very happy we re-signed but I think we could have traded him to colorado in the beginning of the year for ian stewart… but that ship has sailed

Awesome News
Mark’s classy on and off the field. I hope it has some sort of no-trade so BB can’t peddle him to some contender for more prospects in 2009 or 2010.

so if a deal makes sense for the team
we should keep ellis anyway? no thanks

Only as a legal term and only in the context of proving negligence.
But yeah, I’m not saying that “nuff said” is a poor logical argument, only that every time I’ve ever seen it used, I’ve always disagreed with the argument. For me, it’s like seeing someone using Wins or a small sample size as an indicator of player performance. I’ve never seen those things mentioned in an argument that I agreed with.

from the professionals that use it, a simple “Res” (pronounced rezz) indicates the entire phrase, especially when one is struck by a barrel.

but this quote from Slusser’s article is a bit sobering:
Instead, he will be just the third player in the Billy Beane era that the A’s have signed beyond his first free-agent season, joining outfielder Jermaine Dye, who got a three-year deal with an option year in 2002, and third baseman Eric Chavez, who signed a six-year, $66-million extension in 2004.
Let’s hope Ellis’ multiyear deal works out better than the other two.

great news
The one and only player the A;‘s needed to bring back of the free agents. This does mean that Crosby days are most likely to be his last. I read the commisioner asked that no big trades will be made until after the world series. They are trying to keep it all world series news. After watching during the playoffs how valuable a bullpen is I can say the A’s phone will be ringing alot for Street. Of the playoff teams cubs, brewers, rays, dodgers, and whitesox need help there.

I wouldn't say the Rays had bullpen problems.
The Rays pen of 2008 was one of the best in the game. As was the Dodgers. Both top 5 in all MLB.
One bad implosion does not a bad pen make.
The best use of that money and trade chips for the Rays would be attempting to lock up Upton long-term and/or bring in more power. The best uses of that money and trade chips for the Dodgers would be to bring in another SP and/or resign Manny.
Carlos and Victor Zambrano have exactly the same number of career postseason wins. Who would have thought?

I'm not sure the Rays can expect a repeat of their 2008 bullpen performance, though
Balfour, Wheeler, and Howell are not as good as they pitched this year. I would expect some major regression from them in 2009.

Howell
I think Howell is going to be a solid left-handed reliever for a long while. Previously he was used as a starter, and that was a bad, bad thing. I don’t think it’s right to say he’s not this good since he’s in a role he hasn’t been in before. His minor league numbers are very good and he strikes out a bunch, doesn’t walk too many, and doesn’t give up a bunch of homers. I think he’ll be fine.

Jackson sucks
I have no idea where his decent performance numbers this season came from, but the guy can’t pitch. His FIP has been remarkably consistent at about 4.90 throughout his career, which is barely acceptable for a 5th starter or long reliever.

Ya but he supposedly throws in the high nineties as a reliever.
I think that 4.90 is mostly as a starter. In any case they’ve got lots of guys in case Wheeler – Howell – Balfour aren’t the answer.

by WaddellCanseco on Oct 20, 2008 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He throws in the high 90s, yes.
Throwing in the high 90s does not equate to pitching ability. Straight high-90s heat with minus offspeed stuff will not cut it at the MLB level even in the bullpen. (Imagine Santiago Casilla without the slider, and you’ve basically got Jackson in the bullpen.)
His strikeout rates are fairly pathetic— 5.30 K/9 this year is well into Joe Blanton territory— and he doesn’t have anything like the kind of control you need to succeed with that kind of K rate.

Faboo
Even if Ellis is in decline, he’s going to be worth the money… and if he gets back to full health, he’ll REALLY be worth the money.
I also like the decision to go with a 2-3 year contract because it’s more likely to bring draft picks at the back end. A one-year deal, as some were suggesting, would have made it hard for Ellis to be Type A or even Type B because his numbers would have been weighed down with the wretched season this year.

What sal said
Basically, we (meaning Neyer / Sheehan) can’t assess D, so let’s ignore it; also, D very likely doesn’t matter much anyways, even if we (Neyer / Sheehan) could measure it.
Whenever they would write about a player like Ellis, they would first say that he “hit” some lousy / mediocre OPS. They would then acknowledge his defensive reputation, then blithely brush it aside by saying that it very likely doesn’t matter much anyways, and then conclude that he should be replaced by someone with a better OPS / VORP, but (much) worse D.

you missed the additional part?
where they blithely brush aside any possibility that it would like matter much anyways? Go look up some old Neyer or Sheehan columns.
Hell, even today, Sheehan still has a tendency of falling into the walks + homers, minimise everything else including D trap. Even Neyer does this though occasionally. A couple years back he called Adam Everett the worst player in MLB. The flame where MGL excoriated Neyer, and ripped his argument to shreds is still worth reading. It’s on BBTF.

There's good reason to "blithely brush aside" defensive reputation
Good reason being, that reputation is frequently rubbish. Torii Hunter: not good defensively. Yet he keeps winning Gold Gloves.
In evidence law, they talk about “probative value” versus prejudice. That’s fancy terminology for “is this piece of evidence going to help the decisionmaker reach the right decision, or obscure the issue?” If I think “defensive reputation” obscures the issue rather than helping, it’s totally valid to decline to take it into account.

blithely brush aside any possibility that it would like matter much anyways
as in blithely brush aside any possibility that defense, not “defensive reputation” would matter much.
Also, ignoring something just because you, ie Sheehan / Neyer drawing conclusions, and then making outrageous claims lack the ability to assess it is stupid.

In which case he’d be worth the under 7 million a year for 3 years which Ellis at his norm both offensively and defensively is worth a lot more. If he’s not worth it, then no 3rd year and you’re looking at a 10/12 million risk during a time where we have a lot more money than that to play with. Good deal, good risk.

Hehehe
First of all, minor factual problem. What I’ve read says it’s 5-6-6 with 2 total in incentives. That equals $19 million, max. Even if Ellis has the exact same year as 2008 in terms of performance, he’s worth much, much more than that. Like $5 mil per year more than that.
Tango ballparked the numbers and said Ellis was probably worth 4/50 on the open market. The A’s have him for 2/11ish with the option for a third year if he’s healthy and productive. This is the epitome of a great deal.

I’m not giving you a real example. I just don’t remember the real example. But something like
He’d tape a string to a ten dollar bill, then put it in a prominent place while hiding the string from view. Someone would walk by, reach for the bill, and he’d pull the string, then laugh maniacally at the “miss”. Repeat over and over, and if someone said, “Ah, Glen, I think you’re going to pull a string taped to that bill, just like last week..” he’d still laugh maniacally.
Ask BBeane. He was on that team.

The only thing I could find, the joke was on him.
As told by Big Mac:
“I remember when I was still with the Oakland A’s, our third-base coach, Rene Lachemann, and Glenn Hubbard, our second baseman, were in a merciless practical joke battle. Hubbard just would not stop lighting the guy’s shoelaces on fire. So one day Lachemann gets to the ballpark early to take his morning crap. And as soon as he’s done, he grabs a tongue depressor from the trainer’s table, reaches into the toilet, and scoops up a huge piece of crap. I couldn’t believe it. I watched Lachemann shove the entire thing inside Hubbard’s game cleats, and I made sure to get a good spot to watch him put on his shoes. I saw every facial expression as his toes and toenails were getting covered in crap. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed harder in my life.”

ellis took quite a hometown discount, considering he’s getting between $5 and $6 mil a year to come back. he could have gotten close to $10 mil on the open market, especially seeing as how important defense has been in these playoffs…

maybe not right away, because of the surgery
he might have had to sign a one year deal. Then again, perhaps a team like the Diamondbacks (if they lose Hudson) or even one of the Chicago teams might have given Ellis a two year deal. But that bit of uncertainty tipped the scales in Oakland’s favor — not that I’m complaining.

At the most I would say 8 million a year for Ellis but more like around the 6 -7 million range and 3 years. Not many teams needs a 2b coming off a injury. The yanks, angels and redsox are in no need. The indians, tigers, marlins, giants, mariners, rangers, orioles, pirates, phillies, brewers, and reds are not in the market so it comes down to mainly whitesox, jays, and d-backs with hudson being the #1 free agent.

A little devil's advocate
Our team’s history with the health of their long term contracts has not been good. Remember when we re-signed Kotsay? We were all happy then too. Signing guys who have never been awesome hitters (save 2005) and who rely on defense hasn’t worked out for the A’s before…
Ah, screw it. Yay MaEl! You were the first step in any offseason plan to compete next year (unless you wanted to trade for Uggla).

Devine for Kotsay was a fluke
Just because Beane somehow someway managed to flip a terrible contract for a very good prospect does not mean that it is good procedure for the A’s to sign terrible contracts. And Kotsay’s main attribute is great CF defense (when healthy) combined with slightly above average offense (when healthy). Playing him at 1b means taking away his defensive edge and playing him at a position where his O is well, well below average.

The A’s got burned on two long term contracts, and therefore shouldn’t sign anyone ever.

This is a good contract. If Ellis never comes back, it won’t kill us. If he comes back, it’ll be great value. Long term contracts always involve risk – that’s part of the game. This looks like a good risk.

so a (hopefully healthy) Ellis anchors the infield
for 2009-2010, thus allowing some of the A’s 2b prospects to develop at their own pace, move others to SS or 3B, and/or make some available in package deal trades. It also makes it likely that the A’s will try to deal Crosby, probably in a package deal that includes a more desirable player such as Street.

Time will tell
It’s hard for me to have much confidence in the A’s ability to determine when a player with known injuries is worth resigning given their track record with guys like Chavez, Kotsay, Dye, and Calero.
However, Ellis would need to lose quite a bit of effectiveness or miss significant time not to be worth the reported 10-11 million dollars in guarantees.
Overall, there are risks here, but I think the reward outweighs the risk. The A’s have money to spend, and this contract should not end up precluding other moves. We’ll just have to see how healthy Ellis is in the next two years.
by BlameChannel53 on Oct 19, 2008 12:48 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
To me the biggest reason it's a good risk
is that the A’s have too many holes to fill elsewhere – needing to fill 2B would just make it less likely they could take care of SS, 3B, power, etc. they way they need to.

I know I shouldn't be reading ESPN, let alone the comments on the ESPN board...
…but I’m a bit of a masochist and I did. The comments there are very unappreciative of Ellis and the value of this contract. It’s weird to realize that AN makes up such a small contingent of A’s fans, and that the average fan thinks that the A’s are a “farm team for the rest of the MLB,” that “Ellis isn’t even a top 20 second baseman,” and that the A’s are generally a poorly run organization. I am just SO thankful that we have a place like AN.

But where can he play?
And, again, why do people assume he’s going to hit? Yeah, great minor league numbers. But he’s going to be 26 next year and he’s shown ZERO ability to hit in the majors. At some point that talent just isn’t going to translate.

(I have his email addy but not yours.)
Thanks! And great, great pic’!

Surprisingly I'm happy.
I said during the season that I would not mind seeing Ellie’s pop-up inducing swing leave Oakland next season, but of course that was a heat of the moment thought. I know how valuable he is both on and off the field to this team, especially a young team, and having him back at a bargain price is a great business decision. Here’s to hoping he cuts down on the pop-ups just a bit next year so I don’t start pulling my hair out.

I really expected him to be gone!
I’m really glad he’s staying. Having some solid defense behind our young pitchers is great for the mental side of their game. Sweet!

Great news
Excellent player at a very reasonable price. I don’t think its unreasonable to expect him to rebound slightly offensively either.

Actually I believe he is a good hitter every other year, and that will be 2009. He only struggles in the even years.

A second cousin, perhaps?
Is EYS relate to the odd-even rule of Star Trek films (which, admittedly, was broken with the last one and will hopefully not apply to the next one, either)?

compared to other 2b.
interesting that hudson/ellis same age, same career OPS + 99, obviously one has the edge of hitting in a better park

I thought Ellis was a Unicorn.
Beane can be a horse all he wants. but he will NEVER be a unicorn!
so in answer to that, I don’t know who the best looking horse is, but I hope there are other options, because I DON"T like beane.

Incidentally, for those of you wondering about that situation for real
They have apparently hired the farm director (?) of the Brewers. He’s not known as being a particularly “stat-happy” guy, but as is always the case for GMs, it’s as much about his ability to surround himself with useful assistants as it is about the man himself.

Sigh
You don’t have to be an expert to understand that promoting a raw talent fresh out of college straight to MLB is a dumb idea. Point to where PT said anything about being god’s gift to talent development anywhere in his above point, and I’ll give you a cookie.
