2008 A's All-Star
A's 2007 ASG rep was Dan Haren (traded).
2006 was Barry Zito (FA)
2005 was Duchscherer (injured).
Assuming there will be at least one in 2008, vote for your #1 guess. New guys with a hot 1st half, even if it is Daric Barton, probably should not get in, particularly at such an easy-to-fill position (admit it, were you hoping for Gaudin in 2007?), but if he is at .344/18/58 at the break and nobody else stands out, maybe he gets the nod.
So who do you think? Chavez with good health? Harden with a miracle cure? Mark Ellis because there are fewer superstars at the position with name recognition?
I'm sure you don't care about my opinion, so I will leave that for later...OK, Huston Street. Nah, not enough save opportunities; we'll say Jack Cust. Or....(doom doom doom ta-dah!) from the Oakland Athletics: #25, Barry Bonds!

Chavez...
People around MLB will feel sorry for him "having to go through a rebuilding mode". Of course it will be silly but I bet he will get sympathy from the media and many around the league.
I'd also just like to see him make his first All-Star game, it would mean hes healthy and producing like capable.

I hope so
It would UP his trade value.

If Daric has that line at the break
(assuming its avg and not obp) then not only is he automatic choice we can start talking about the huge number of ASG's he'll be in in the future.

I would say Travis Buck
but I don't think he's going to get the national attention required to be voted into the popularity contest that is the all star game.

Hell, can we . . .
. . . pick someone who is not on the team yet? Trades pending.
How about Mark Kotsay? Reports are he is feeling great and already hitting.

If he's still around
I'm guessing Street. It's always easy to hide a relief pitcher on an ASG roster, especially when it's a lone representative from a team (Duchscherer).

I'm going with Street
I think that OF and 1b are going to be too crowded to get Buck or Barton in considering that I think they won't have the eye-popping power numbers for those positions.
Street is a risky pick because there is a good chance he could be traded, but I am betting that we hold on to him, hoping someone will get desperate and overpay for him at the trading deadline.

Duke was not injured in 2005
He just did not play in the game. He was the "in case of extras guy," similar to how Zito got screwed the year that Roger Clemmens was "retiring" and got added by the commish.

Cust, if he continues his HR tear.
He's a feel good story after all.

PTBNL
jarforcefatherofforce astutely said it may be a player not on the roster (as the Bonds idea indicated should be an option); I had originally put in 2 more lines after "Cust" which were "other position player" and "player not currently on the roster" but even though I saw it on the preview, it didn't show on the final post. Maybe the "new" AN fixed that bug (got your beta testers on it Blez?)
By putting "injured" next to Duke I meant I thought he was currently going to miss part of the year and not be someone to put on the poll list, not that he was injured in 2005. But if he is on the opening day roster that's good news.

344/18/58
Also, it would probably take a line like this to get in at 1B. Wouldn't want to jinx the boy but if he had a hot start we shouldn't say the Cards should have dumped Pujols instead. This is my mental image of what Wally Joyner looked like when he got voted in as a rookie ahead of Mattingly in his prime, then never made another ASG. Looking at Retrosheet, Joyner was at .313 and had 20 HR at the break (he finished at .290 and 22). And we laughed and laughed as he faded, and at all the Halo fans who still wanted Wally World to be the Rookie of the Year instead of the Mighty Canseco!

I hope
that its Chavez. Not so he can up his trade value but so he can start hitting like he used too and help out the utes! If not Harden so we can trade his injured but talented arm for a couple of good prospects at the trading deadline. I know the Mets will take him and hopefully they get Blanton first though!

Help out the Utes?
I know Chavvy was drafted out of high school, but is now really the time to be focusing on getting a higher education?

Street
As already said earlier, I think it will be Street, only because Francona knows he will need good arms in the pen. I dont think saves will matter, unlike fantasy BB ;).
