Byrnes hosted on KNBR last night and discussed the Swisher Trade
and although he tried hard to find that middle ground on the Swisher trade and the A's rebuilding strategy...at one point saying, " if I'm a fan I'm asking Billy where does it stop and when do you dig in and build around your best players instead of trading them or letting them walk (Hudson, Mulder, Dye, Haren, Giambi, Swisher, Miggy - all mentioned), then if I'm Billy Beane I ask the fan why don't more of you show up at the Ballpark, and then again the fan should ask why haven't you built a real ballpark?"
But he was clearly anti-Billy's strategy. Said that around baseball people wonder how the A's let so many top tier players go. Byrnes is thoughtful and well spoken. There was a lot of angry callers to the show and he handled them well and in some cases threw gas on the fire. He seems to have a chip on his shoulder about his trade - we have zip to show for letting him go - but he has cashed in on going to a hitters ballpark so he may just be playing the crowd.

What's the Hawk going to call him?
Nicky? Swisheroo?
"C'mon, Swisheroo, we need a hit here!"
(on a drive to the gap)
"C'mon, Nicky, get it!"

Byrnes disses Beane trading strategy - shocker.
Next thing you know, Milton Bradley will have something to say.
No grudges there. Nope. No sirree.

i think Byrnes' hair is more thoughtful
than Byrnes.

Considering the team he is on, Winning the WS,
trading RJ, and Curt Schilling, they did the EXACT same thing the A's did, but they spent a lot more money for one year before they blew it up.

Byrnes is ignorant...
...adolescent, and overrated, but colorful. He will be a Giant soon enough. So much hooey is being kicked around, especially from the SF media; Scott Ostler's transparently provocative piece, and Ratto's unusual column are two of the most egregious examples. I was shocked to see Slusser throw in with the Merc columnists and declare that we'll be awful for the near future. Why wouldn't this be premature until we get to Papago, let alone the All Star break, and how can Beane's method be such a surprise? Jesus, Mulder and Hudson gone was a much bigger blow at the time than any of this. Eight straight years of winning baseball, and one horribly unlucky one, doesn't give the management enough credit to get through this?
Only one player from that list was the type to build around, for so many reasons, and that was Huddy.

Byrnes lost all credibility with me
...when he failed to touch home plate.
You're dead to me, Byrnsie!!!!

When Byrnes failed to touch home plate...
I turned the TV off immediately. In my soul I knew that 1)we would end up losing that game by ONE run (and we did, in extras, no less), and 2)that we would not win another game after that (that came true as well, in particularly brutal fashion, with our big $12m/yr "RBI GUY" being pinch hit for with the tying run in scoring position in the 9th, and two backwards K's in a row to end the game).
I never want to see, hear from, or think of Eric Byrnes in my lifetime. He is the poster child for ritalin. He is someone to make three spectacular plays and botch four routine ones. I think the #22 jersey should be retired, because every time I see it for the next 20 years, I'll think of him kneeling down behind home plate in Boston feeling sorry for himself while Fate turns Her back on us again...

i love byrnes
obviously there was no way byrnes would steal 50 bases on the a's, but still, chip on his shoulder or not, i can't disagree. i like the haul for swisher but i still don't see any reason why wolff will spend any more money when fremont rolls around. i just don't want it to be the same old.

I don't understand Byrnes/Beane issue.
Byrnes had issues with Ken Macha, not necessarily Beane. Byrnes was traded because he and Macha wouldn't stop taking jabs at each other in the media and it became a distraction. I wish he was still an A, Byrnes is a catalyst type player who helps a team win a la David Eckstein. I used the picture of Byrnes tearing the drunk guy off the fence as my screen saver for a long time.

I always liked Brynes while he played for the A's
But the more I see him in the media the more I don't like him. He seems kind of rude on The Best Damn Sports Show Period. Plus his commments during the playoffs last year weren't enduring. Oh well, he ain't an Oakland A anymore so whatever.

I listened
I think Byrnes feelings about Beane have been expressed on the radio before. I once heard him say that he would argue with Beane about getting on the field and Beane would tell him his OPS sucked, etc. I think he is no fan of Beane because Byrnes didn't fit into the plan as far as the type of player the A's valued.
That said, all the crap I heard o the radio by Byrnes was about as insightful as what I have heard the few times I have listened to Jim Rome. That is to say, not very insightful and more meant to be imflammatory. I found it odd that Byrnes speaks in the same clipped tones that Rome speaks in.
Who am I to judge if Byrnes wants to play Jim Rome for a few hours. Rome is obviously pretty good at attracting listeners and Byrnes appears to want to one day be a sports show jock.
I wanted to call in and ask, "why the hell didn't Art Howe pinch run for Jeremy Giambi before the flip? Why the hell weren't you already around the bases and sitting in the dugout after tying the game?"
Instead I listened to him bag on Miami, "praise" Oakland and stay pretty neutral about what he thought. Saying several times he could see all perspectives. One time saying he took Billy's side and then changing his mind... meanwhile uniformed sports fan blow hards called into the show attributing the move to everything from pay roll cutting (which it decidedly isn't) to whatever other wild theory they had.
Just like on the Jim Rome show. I don't think it was a coincidence.

Even when they go to commercials, Byrnes does
than Jim Rome cut-out, KNBR THE sports leader.

I was grinding my teeth listening on the way home
from work last night...
When Byrnes kept trashing Florida, I was screaming at the Radio...TWO WS in the last ten years! And they just hauled in a boatload of prospects in a division of aging teams....
by plrraz on Jan 4, 2008 9:59 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
The 1st Ws
they won was won by SPENDING MONEY. By throwing money at big name players like Gary Sheffield, Moises Alou, Kevin Brown, Bobby Bonilla, Devon White, Robb Nenn, Al Leiter. By hiring a big name manager in Jim Leyland.
So, their cheapskate model has brought 1 WS and a pissed off, disillusioned fanbase that has shrunk to almost nonexistence.
Also, they may have a boatload of prospects. So? They had Miguel Cabrera and Hanley Ramirez. Didn't win nothing. Cabrera is already gone. In a couple years time, Hanley, will probably be gone too.
OTOH, those ageing teams, ALL have much more resources to spend. It's not even inconceivable that one of Cabrera and Hanley ends up playing for one of those ageing teams against Florida.
Furthermore, the future matters. So does the present.

Byrnes might have worked his way off of my MVP05
Byrnes might have worked his way off of my MVP05 roster. I had been using him as a pinch runner and sometimes RFer against lefties.
He may have to go to Arizona now.
