Video Game Rosterbation *Updated* with Poll!

Thanks to everyone that helped!

Now that February is upon us (at least in a few hours) it's time for me to break out the Baseball video games to get ready for the season.

Star-divide

The last baseball video game I bought is a few years old (MVP 2005 for Nintendo Gamecube)but every season (and during if I'm playing it) I update my roster. Considering the A's roster last year changed almost everyday it was a challenge keeping it current.

The bigger challenge is putting a roster together when half the players weren't in the big leagues or even on the radar back when they made it.  The game has the minor league teams but their rosters are mostly filled with "fake" players *update*. They changed the names of some of the minor leaguers but used their stats/abilities

Luckily there is an exstensive create a player system and you can edit the abilities of exsiting players as well.

So on Monday I set out to make the 2008 A's.  A few of the players where in game but at their old postions (if any) and their abilities were weak.  I tried creating a bunch of guys like, Ryen Sweeney, Andrew Brown, Jack Hannahan, Donnie Murphy, Daric Barton, Travis Buck, etc but I realized I don't know much about them.

Besides the the A's offical website, where is the best place to get info on these players.  I need to know stuff like;

Their righty/lefty splits

speed, baserunning ability

what pitches they have and how fast they throw them

defensive range, throwing strength

strike zone hot/cold spots

Anyone know if someone goes this in depth?  it would help a lot.

That's a lot of specificity.

For minor leaguers, minorleaguesplits.com has info on lefty/righty stats and batted ball patterns (i.e. whether guys are pull hitters, opposite field hitters, etc.).

BR ability-- just use steals and triples, it's close enough.

Pitches-- if they're major leaguers, use Pitch F/X (search for Josh Kalk's pitch tool). If they're minor leaguers, good luck-- BA might have scouting reports.

Defense-- Look up UZR and RZR for major leaguers; BA might have comments about minor leaguers. Probably a lot of guesswork here.

Hot/cold: ESPN's "Scouting" tab has these for major leaguers, but it requires Insider access.

Well

The new games come out in a little over a month, so maybe wait for them?  2K8 and The Show come out early March.

good idea

but I was itching to play now.  I have MVP 2005 for Nintendo Gamecube.  EA Sports lost the rights with MLB so they could make anymore games.  I didn't have any other system that had new baseball games (at least games with actual players in it).  I have the Nintendo Wii now so hopefully they come up with a new game for that system. They have a few Wii baseball games but I heard they weren't that great.

I try to

stick to current Rosters.  Anytime I unlocked a "classic" A's player I stuck them on the AAA team.

The newer "next gen" games
also will have update support, like the way the PC brethen have had, "official" ones from the publisher that gives updated rosters and what have you as the season goes.

How often these updates, however, are anyone's guess. Consoles will have to depend on the official ones, while those on the PC have the benefit of unofficial roster mods from the gamer community.

http://forums.operationsports.com/vBulletin/index.php

Here's a forum (registration required) where the gaming community (and sports fanatics) work together to make "Create-A-Player" stats for a multitude of sports games. Just remember that some of these people look at players thru their own team's lens, so sometimes those stats might be bias (especially on prospects).

I usually am biased as well

It's no fun playing with a sucky team.  I try to be optimistic with create a player.

If you have MVP 05

this link has player attribute info.   A lot of the fake players are actually real players that just need their names changed.  MVP 05 could not name the players because they were low level minor leaguers or replacement players from 94 and thus are not part of the players union.

THANKS!

That really helped.  I found a bunch of players.  It's amazing how many players have retired since 2005.

EA top 100 prospects in 2005

Interesting list from 2005

  1. Dan Meyer, SP Oakland A's
  1. Jairo Garcia, RP Oakland A's
  1. Nick Swisher, RF Oakland A's
  1. (Huston Street), RP Oakland A's
  1. (Javier Herrera), CF Oakland A's
  1. (Ryan Sweeney), RF Chicago White Sox
  1. (Daric Barton), C Oakland A's

these were the only A's prospects on the EA radar in 2005.  As of today i would rank the players

  1. Swish
  1. Street
  1. Barton
  1. Garcia
  1. Sweeney
  1. Meyer
  1. Herrera

(thanks for the link that showed this athleticsBB4 life, I love AN)

I love MVP05

I wish EA didn't lose the rights to make baseball games, they are the best! I also have The Bigs on wii, but I am terrible at having quick enough reflexes for defense, and I get so pissed off when the computer robs every home run and makes spectacular dives and leaps so I never get hits. Blah. Of course, the cool thing was when playing against my friend Kendall hit a towering HR over the green monster so that was kinda fun lol.

Anyway, I don't have any suggestions where to go for stats on guys. I usually download updated rosters and games from mvpmods.com. They do a really great job.

I haven't tried "The Bigs" yet

It's on my gamefly Q though.  MVPmods looks interesting.  I'll have to find time to register and check it out.

clarification - I don't play baseball video games

because I'm sure they'd quickly become addictive, and take up even more time than I already waste!
