DLD 1.11.8 Plenty More
They may walk hand in hand
Like lovers through the market square
Selecting leather goods,
Pretending that they just don't care
They say all the boys are monsters
All the girls are whores
So when you lose the one you love
There's always plenty more
They may be in a club
All dressed up waiting to meet you
Or in some garret bleak
Despairing over what to do
All the girls are monsters
All the boys are whores
So when you lose the one you love
There's always plenty more

Plenty crappy FA OF?
Rotoworld is currently splattered with A's news/rumors.
http://www.rotoworld.com/content/hom...
There's talk of a Street for Crisp trade (reported to be fiction)
And talk of the A's being interested in Mike Cameron, Rondell White and Reggie Sanders.
Also mentions Duke get $1.2M and the Dan Johnson is finally healthy from viral meningitis (YIPEE!).
What's next for Dan Johnson...
and his propensity for strange maladies? I say dengue fever.

Cytomegalovirus is a future possibility

if he does get Gigantism ...
... he's sure to subsequently develop Progeria.
Oh, man.
While I was living in Guatemala, I got hit by the truck that is dengue fever. Worst. Week. Ever. They say that you should just lay down until it's gone (while taking meds), but I just had to get out of the house (which is where the mosquitos that gave me dengue lived). I remember stumbling around the streets of Guatemala, cursing the names of all mosquitos ever to live.
just lay down until it's gone
No, that's for bank robbers.
Good thing it was viral
If it was bacterial, they might have had to amputate some limbs. That's the only thing I could think of that might make Dan Johnson even slower than he is now.
Oh! Sweet nothing!
The Squirrel Nut Zippers were named after Squirrel Brand's popular Nut Zippers candy, an early 20th century blend of chewy caramel and peanuts. Yum!
Indeed, known ArakSOT haunt Cambridge MA was once a candy-making center for the New England. As detailed in Steve Almond's, Candy Freak, Main Street in Cambridge was once home to many candy-making facilities (and at least one that is still in operation today - smell those Junior Mints as you walk by!). To this day, you can see the words "Squirrel Brand Company" on the outside of the former building.
I'm Waiting For the Man
I fear that if we're gonna start invoking VU lyrics, Nico won't be too far behind.
I saw a predecessor band of the Squirrel Nut Zippers--Johnny Vomit and the Dry Heaves--play a frat party in Chapel Hill back in my youth.

Nico was a goddess
She gets into heaven just on the basis of her song "The Falconer" (from Desert Shore). But add in "All Tomorrow's Parties," her cover of "I'll Keep it With Mine," etc., and I'll defend her to the death. Well, not to the death, but to the extent of dull, manageable pain.
Lovely weather we're having here today,
Right?

sweet streets of New England
I always thought this would be a good band name.
New England sweets
- Necco wafers are the. lamest. candy. ever.
- Moxie, on the other hand, kicks ass. Still my favorite soft drink, though most people seem to find the gentian root flavor to be disturbing.
I also used to like Vernors, too, but they softened the flavor a while back (and even I admit that it used to be pretty harsh back when I liked it).
they also switched to corn syrup
Yeah, I used to love Vernor's, too. Have you tried Stewart's? Their ginger ale is plenty spicy. Their orange soda is excellent, too (add a shot of vodka for a "Stewdriver").
Boston Cooler
Vernors and Vanilla Ice Cream. Also Vernors is a must for tummy aches, and is not a bad hang-over cure.
I don't think I've tried Stewart's

Happy Friday!
I only have to work a half day today. Woo!
And a link:
Malcolm Gladwell posted a good argument about PEDs.
The funniest bit:
I realize that the people running major league baseball and the NFL are not philosophers.
Et tu, Prospectus?
In today's "Top 11 Diamondbacks Prospects," Baseball Prospectus mentions 'Greg Smith, LHP'.
Well according to the link....
it might be a differnt Greg Smith... though not the one its intended to be.
Another take on our minor league system, this
time by Deric McKamey, it is posted on Scout.

PLAYER POTENTIAL RATING
Scale of (1-10) representing a player’s upside potential
10 – Hall of Fame-type player
9 – Elite player
8 – Solid regular
7 – Average regular
6 – Platoon player
5 – Major league reserve player
4 – Top minor league player
3 – Average minor league player
2 – Minor league reserve player
1 – Minor league roster filler
PROBABILITY RATING
Scale of (A-E) representing the player’s realistic chances of achieving their potential
A – 90% probability of reaching potential
B – 70% probability of reaching potential
C – 50% probability of reaching potential
D – 30% probability of reaching potential
E – 10% probability of reaching potential
If he's right
then the Haren and Swisher trades were definitely correct moves.
I'd characterize Haren as "elite" and Swisher as "solid" before the trades.
DLS + CarGon = 100% elite player
Cunningham+Carter+Gio+Anderson+Sweeney= 250% solid player
I'd peg Smith at something like 7C. I don't know what to do with Eveland; is he a 9? But even if we stipulate that the two of them are utter flameouts, the trades should give Oakland at least one additional "solid" (i.e. substantially above average) player over what the team had previously.

I'm no bike rider
but these folks are in the same building, and I just had to get one of these
Cameron agrees to terms with Brewers
According to Ken Rosenthal. Mike Cameron, we hardly knew ye!
According to MLB Traderumors...
Buster Onley says that the Kotsay to the Braves talks may become serious today (yay!)
Eddie Guardado signed with the Rangers.
Mets will do everything it takes to get Johan Santnaa (If that means Santa is out of the AL, and not a RedSock or Yankee, then I am extatic!).
And Walt Jocketty is now with the Reds.
that would be a major coup for Beane
Even if he has to eat most of Kotsay's salary, getting any sort of value there is a huge win.

OK, so if Cleveland ...
... is going to start calling their stadium "The Prog," then they really should acquire Anderson, Wakefield, Buford, and Howe.
They need to hire this girl as the organist
Adam Melhuse
Resigned with the Rangers to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training.
Do the A's still have Rob Bowen under contract?
wha?
They DFA'ed Putnam to make room for ... Terrence Long II?
Not that Putnam was turning into much of anything, but ...
I would have said Putnam
was himself Terrence Long II.
I give him at least a 50-50 shot at clearing outright waivers if it comes to that.
fair 'nuff, but ...
... would you rather have TL II at age 33 with (I'm hoping this isn't the case) a $1M+ guaranteed ML contract, or TL II at age 25 with <1y service time and a minor-league/ML-minimum salary?</p>
Trepidation

Those elements, will be part of the new RR (although diaries will be changing big time...) as well as other new stuff.
More than anything else, the site will look very different... everyone will hate it at first, then in three days be used to it. It will look less like a blog (you know, stories just piled on top of one another one by one) and more like... well, yea. Farewell to walls of text, for better or worse. (You can probably guess where my loyalties lie.) As I said, the diaries will be changing dramatically, and, hopefully, for the better. Honestly, I haven't even had much of a chance to play around with the new site yet, but there will be alot of new things, and it should be easier to find basic Royals info on this site, without having to goto some other site to look up stats, etc.
Phil Spector's Wall of Text
I assume from the above the RR fella is suggesting that front page stories will now be a couple sentences and then "click here for more." That seems to be the web standard these days, in that it forces click-throughs and hence page views.
I'm most curious about the diaries changing dramatically, particularly w/r/t what folks can or can't do with HTML.

Well, this is cheery
And you thought Tonya Harding was a bad skating story.
a more positive skating story
Was anyone else at the Shark Tank last night? I attended my first-ever Sharks game, and had a blast.
You'll have even more fun
if you go watch them when they're playing a road game.
(Sharks home record: 8-9-4)
(Sharks road record: 16-3-2)
yeah, folks around us were noting that
They skated circles around the Canucks last night, though.
So what's the deal with that?
Is their style not suited to their rink or something?
I used to watch a fair amount
actually, this was my first NHL game at all
I used to watch a lot of college games at Miami (OH) when I was a wee primate.
Don't know if anybody cares, but..
I got sick of waiting for the A's to release their schedule in .csv format, so I typed it in to Outlook myself. I've uploaded it to Google Public Calendars (just search for 2008 oakland athletics) and can provide an Outlook .csv if anybody wants it.
forget AN wiki
For '08 and '09, Beane should operate the A's on an open-source wiki model.
