Open Thread: Game 141 - A's vs. Ratatouille

Well, it’s the battle of the Joes today as the A’s try to avoid the sweep by the most annoying team in baseball. I will admit, somewhat shamefully, that this is the first series in many years that I didn’t make my way over to the Anaheim stadium clad in green-and-gold to cheer our boys on. I just don’t have the stomach to sit around the gloating Angels fans with their stunning ability to name three players on their own team, and to be quite honest; the A’s just aren’t that interesting to watch right now.

I don’t know what it is about the Angels, but I dislike them more than any other team in baseball, and that’s saying a lot when you consider the competition. The only player I like (and I love him) is Vladimir Guerrero. That’s it. I despise their manager, their closer, most of their starting staff, their announcers (unless they are doing basketball), and anyone who is described as ‘playing Angels baseball’ or ‘scrappy, gritty, or Figgy’.

So basically, I’m mad at Seattle for not taking over the division in our absence, and I hope the Angels get knocked out of the playoff in spectacular fashion. Oh, and that someone else, anyone else from another team, wins the Cy.

That is all.

well I did go to the game last night

covered in green and gold and full of my arsenal of what I could say to fans of a team on which I could name more players and more history.  It really isn't that hard when all you ask them is what happened before 2002 and they say I dunno I wasn't a "fan".  I got into my fair share of friendly trash talk while sitting in the bleachers which was fine, but then I met up with some friends near the right field foul pole and was there from the 5th inning on, that's when shit really got started.

The typical beach ball rolled around in the 6th inning stopping the entire game so the section could focus on the ball missing an entire inning of action.  An inning later I stood up to try and locate a friend sitting in a different section while on my phone and had the entire section not only yell profane and juvenile insults but began to throw more than just peanuts coming very close to my girlfriend.  THIS DID NOT GO WELL.  I was unaware of the thrown items as I was trying to locate my friend and only really became aware of the situation when the section began chanting: "sit down Oakland" which at that point only spurred me on.  A vendor came down and said someone said they will give you $5 if you sit down (how terrifically Orange County) this did not slow me down however.  Now another vendor came over and said I had to sit down or he would call security, I said tell me where you can't stand to cheer at a baseball game, go ahead and call security.  Next one of the old time cracker jack throwers came by and says you need to sit down.  I ask why you can't stand to cheer when you pay to be at a park.  He responds you can to cheer but not when nothing is going on.  I said an inning ago I missed the whole half inning because this section was standing to hit a beach ball I am entitled to stand and cheer if I want. The man left in favor of finding security.  It was at this point that something HARD was thrown and that is where it stops I can't let my girlfriend be endangered regardless of my pride, but you tell me how throwing items at people is allowed while standing is not.

The rest of the night was your typical Angel's post 2002 fan trying to talk smack and having no clue including one very classless gentleman deciding to target my girlfriend who through this whole ordeal had said nothing nor even turned around.  I have had some experiences at Angel stadium before but apparently the rat infestation they are dealing with has spread to their stands.

This was an unacceptable baseball experience and makes it really hard for me to hate the Red Sox more, but I still do, but now they hold only the slimmest of margins.

Rats in human skin

I had a similar experience at the Coliseum...

Was given great tix by a vendor and brought my 7 year old to see the game.  Around the 4th inning, a group of about 12 seat crashers got past the "usher" and sat in our section.  The ringleader in front of me.  He proceeded to turn around and try to make time with a lady two seats down from my son. He kept trying to get the fans to cheer and to do the wave, yelling obscenities and verbally assaulting several fans of the opposite team. All about 12 inches from my 7 year old, who was rightly terrified.  I couldn't do anything because I has about 6 of them blocking my row, 4 behind me and the chump in front of me.  Finally some older fans a few rows back starting making a fuss and he and his posse decided to leave because our section was so uncool.  Finally, the seige lifted and we could go back to what we were doing before - watching a baseball game.

All of this happened with a "Security Guard" not 15 feet away.  It happened over the course of 2 innings, during which the "Security Guard" did nothing but talk with friends and shake hands.  I kept trying to get his attention, but for 2 innings he did not pay any attention to the stands whatsoever.

This happens far too much at the ballpark - no matter what section or seat.  It is the biggest reason I don't go to as many games as I used to. It is a shame....

Sounds like you were being a jerk

If I were sitting right behind you, blocked from seeing the game because you just wanted to stand for no immediate game-event-related reason, I'd have complained too, regardless of what colors you were wearing.  A ticket doesn't give you the right to block the fan behind you for innings at a time.

That of course doesn't make them throwing stuff OK either.  But jeez, try to be motivated by common courtesy once in a while, not just by showing your pride or saving your skin.  We're trying to have a society here.

Basketball?

Well, I dunno about the NBA. I know that the announcers for Pac-10 games are every bit as obnoxious and pro-LA as the Angels announcers, and unfortunately because the conference hires them, you get stuck with them all the time. Particularly for the Pac-10 tournament, which is always in L.A. (thus providing an enormous advantage to UCLA and USC every season).

Ironically, I actually kind of like the UCLA basketball team (and I'll even root for USC if it's a nonconference game and the opponent isn't a team I like). I just can't stand the FSN West guys...

by PaulThomas on Sep 5, 2007 11:32 AM PDT reply actions

This is exactly why

I have refused to let my boyfriend take me to Angel Stadium. He lives just up the street from it and desperately wanted to treat me to an A's/Angels game this season. I told him he simply wasn't ready for that. Heck! I am not ready for that! I braved Yankee Stadium decked out in A's gear, but for some reason I can't bring myself to go to Angel's Stadium. Is that weird?

by PaulThomas on Sep 5, 2007 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions

The solution is to hit the ball

I think Cust swings and misses more than any player I have ever seen.  I have watched a lot of strike out guys, but they at least fouled a few off once in awhile, Cust just misses.  If you don't "K" every 3rd at bat the pitcher  can't show you up.

What a weird lineup we have going...

Scutaro's been swinging the bat well, but in the two-hole? Cust doesn't hit left-handed pitching with authority, but he's still in the cleanup spot? Ellis has a career on-base percentage of over .380 versus lefties and he's in the five spot? Swisher is swinging the bat a lot better as a righty than as a lefty this year, but he is dropped down into the bottom half of the lineup when facing a lefty? Suzuki is NOT in the 9 hole and MURPHY has been cleared to swing a bat after Geren said he probably wouldn't until this weekend?

I'm very confused. I think some guys need to be swiched. I'd go with:

Stewart
Ellis
Swisher
Piazza
Cust
Scutaro
DJ
Murphy
Suzuki

can he make it 9?! I love when he pitches a complete game.

Yippee! We won 1 of 3 games but we are on

a winning streak now.  I still can't get K-Rod's celebration out of my head from last night.  What a piece of shit!

hahaha

If I could possibly get away with it without having a hurt hand or spending time in jail, I totally would.

I don't understand how he can continue to act like a complete idiot after every save and get away with it. I would fine him for showboating or something.

you should have heard me last nitee......I was flipping out because that asshole has no class and his manager  acts like that sort of thing is acceptable during a game that means next to nothing for them.

Fuck K-Hole and his idiot manager to boot! -MRod

Hope so!

That would make me feel much better about this season. Next year should be much better :)

no doubt

next year it's gonna be on for sure........stupid ass Angels are gonna get their asses served to 'em next year people. Be warned.....

by mrod on Sep 5, 2007 3:27 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm really excited about next year

This year was such a sad season with all the injuries early and often and never being able to climb out of that hole... but we get to start fresh again next year, and if any positive comes out of this season its that guys like Chavez and Kotsay (assuming they are still on the team for 2008, you never know with this team haha) have PLENTY of time to rest up and get back into great shape. I'm so happy Chavez is finally getting surgery and I really hope it leads to an injury/pain free 2008.

Anyway I'll stop talking... but yeah. I'm really looking forward to 2008. I think it's going to be a really awesome year for the A's.

Hey lay off F-Rod

For him, actually not blowing the game against the A's is a pretty big deal.
