Open Thread: Game 162 - A's vs. Angels
Well, this is it, people. The moment we’ve all been waiting for. After a long, long season that saw today’s opponent go virtually uncontested in their quest to win the West, the final game is now upon us. I’m sure MLB hoped for a better series this last weekend of the season, one that would decide the west via a single game; something like the two ongoing races in the NL. I suppose it could be worse. We could be the Mets. At least we’ve had a hundred games or so to get used to the idea of staying home this October.
Today’s game features Chad ‘I was so good in the first half-what happened?’ Gaudin against Jered ‘My parents have a spelling problem’ Weaver.
I can’t wait for Spring Training. Open up this game thread. Talk about the NL, talk about football, talk about next year.
For what it’s worth; one more time: LET’S GO OAK-LAND!!!!!

Gosh, I think I'm getting emotional.
it's been quite a season. lots of new names, lots of frustration, but I wouldn't spend baseball season any other place.
You took the words right out of my mouth...
No matter how frustrating this season has been, I hate to see it end. I went to the Coliseum on Friday for my last game this year and I stayed for so long afterwards, it was practically empty when I left. The security guards were leaving the same time I was. I just didn't want to go knowing that I wouldn't be back for 6 months.
I wonder how I ever got through past winters without this site. Thank you AN for making this season bearable and hopefully keeping me sane during the offseason.

Sucks to end this way,
but it's been an interesting season nonetheless. I'm happy to have AN to suffer along with. :)
rebuilding
It's been a tough year but at least we were able to see some young, new faces to help us take it next year. Thanks AN for helping us all get through it. LET'S GO OAK-LAND!!!!
not looking good for them. and they probably
thought with Glavine starting the game today, they were sure to at least force a tie game tomorrow. I didn't realize until today that the loser is totally out of it. The East or nothing. I think there fans will feel a whole lot worse than us.
Where is Melhuse, Brown, Furmaniak, DaVanon &....
Bowen? Geren should throw these guys a bone, what's the point of having the same regulars out there? It's not like they've been gettin' the job done.

Looks like Giants are on FSN...
Grrr, what a season.
And game 162 is underway
GO A's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Already more comments than yesterday's game
Go Athletics Nation!!!!!!!!!
Sad to end this way
but oh well. What's with Piazza waving at that bad pitch! I won't be sad to see him go. Retirement would be a good move for him I think. I still say Chad will have a great full season next year.

Anyone watching Mets or Phils?
Mets fans look shell-shocked...just unbelivable.
Phils are ready to PARTY!
This is weird
I am watching FSN Bay Area on the computer but the audio is some goofy Angels announcers. Probably because it's FSN BA+?
by A'sfansince1970 on Sep 30, 2007 1:29 PM PDT reply actions
Ah, damn. No game on TV here in SD.
FSN said they were showing the game, but instead, they're running "Jerry Rice: Behind the Glory".
Way to go, Gaudin. I didn't think he'd get out
of that one without giving up a run
You should go into hibernation. I'll wake you
for Game 1.
It's all over.
Mets blow biggest lead ever & Phils win out.
Now it's up to San Diego or Rockies
For football, I get Denver at Indy and Denver
is kicking butt. I don't care about either one, really, but didn't expect to see that.
We're going to be soooo sick of Cowboys
by the end of the season.
You have a point. I just fear how awful it will
be by Xmas. It was disgusting how easy it was for them today. I don't know why I watch.
The one bad thing about the Mets loss...
is that we As fans will have to suffer through another offseason of Blanton to the Mets for Milledge, Pelfrey, and Heilman. And if Omar gets on the phone, hang up BB. I don't want to give up Kentucky Joe for an even worse Bradley and two pitchers that combined aren't as good as Blanton. Now if they want to give up them for Lenny and DJ, keep on talking...

Thank You
To Blez and Nico and Brad Z. and everyone at AN. Following the A's, reading diaries, adding my own comments, and reading agreements and disagreements has been an absolute joy to me during the 2007 season.
So thanks for making a dismal season that much brighter.
by richwol on Sep 30, 2007 1:44 PM PDT reply actions
I second that!
This is my first season on AN and I've never been so caught up in the A's on a daily basis like this. I passed up going to a sports bar because I couldn't bear to miss the last game of the season with my AN friends.
I do. It's quiet but it's Angels announcers.
I agree about NOT trading Kentucky Joe. I think he should be untouchable.

okay now... somehow i muted myself
perhaps a symbolic gesture for the upcoming long silence of no A's games until next season.
Someone figure out how to clone Barton
in the off season
only 152 days until spring training 2008....

The rockies game is GREAT
(sorry A's)

MLB deserves a Colorado-Cleveland World Series
due to the scheduling of the Series for Oct. 24 thru Nov. 1. Way too late. Imagine the weather they might get in those two cities.
woo hoo...
earning his keep behind Danny and the hopefully not traded in the offseason Joe.
by AsWin on Sep 30, 2007 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions
We need Joe too much to trade him.
I like the Phillies vs Indians this year.
by A'sfansince1970 on Sep 30, 2007 2:27 PM PDT reply actions
I'm with you on that one..
by AsWin on Sep 30, 2007 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions
We'll at least need a SP in return
If someone wants a Proven Starter and is willing to send over an SP prospect plus a position prospect, it might be worth the risk.
No one wants to just GIVE him away.
But if we can get something of better value to our team than its certainly worth considering.
The problem is...
that in today's market, teams aren't willing to trade young, promising, top-level pitching. If we had a surplus of pitching then sure, Joe would be expendable with his contract status and the vast number of teams needing a #3. The problem is we have no way of replacing anyone other than a #4/#5 type since that is what BB has been able to discover and that's what is available in the FA market. Trading a solid pitcher for a prospect is always risky. We shouldn't risk another Dan Meyer situation. Especially since the writings on the wall that Rich is not going to be in our future.
by AsWin on Sep 30, 2007 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah but what are we really risking?
I don't think this team is up to beating the Angels next year, regardless of Blanton. At this point, we're looking at 2009 as our next competitive season.
God, the Whiners are pathetic!
Getting shutout by the Seahawks, as was all too predictable.
The good news for all AN... Oakland has a 1st place team... your OAKLAND RAIDERS!
Well, M's win. Win = 3rd place, Loss = last
I guess a loss is technically still a tie for 3rd, but it would be nice to see Tex alone in last.
harden for closer in 2008!
Scutaro!
Maybe the last time we will say that!
by A'sfansince1970 on Sep 30, 2007 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions
Hey guys
Sorry for being away, but I was reveling in the Raiders win over the Fins.
Daunte C for five TDs? Incredible!!
Let's get a win!!
Holy crap, Mike.
WOOO!
A'S WIN!!
Hopefully that's the start of a 30-win streak that will carry onto next year.
Hopefully, this starts the downfall of the Angles.
We can hope!
AW!
Are they going around the field?
AW!
I don't know.
Geren was pointing and motioning... it sort of looked like it.
DEXTER!
Back tonight! WOO!
Ooh good show.
Did you ever watch Six Feet Under? It's weird for me to see David Fisher as an emotionless serial killer now.
No.
:(
Well Michael C. Hall is an excellent actor
and if you enjoy Dexter, then check out Six Feet Under. He's great in it.
Yes.
Nice win!
Can't wait until next year Thanks A's for all the great fun, even in defeat!

Zito ending strong. In the 8th inning
only 97 pitches.
Next year will be huge for him.
I say Indians vs. Phillies.
by A'sfansince1970 on Sep 30, 2007 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions
It will probably Az vs LAA just to keep me up
late each night.
2007 Season
Well, it could have been worse. I've seen worse. This team has a lot of potential, if they can stay healthy. Next year is fraught with uncertainty, which should make for an interesting winter and spring.
Who will stay and who will go?
Anyone care to speculate on the April '08 25 man roster?
