Open Thread: Game 151 - A's vs. Rangers
The A’s face off against the Rangers for the last time this season, as they try to sweep the four game series on their quest for .500. Lenny DiNardo will try to wind down his season on a positive note after the shellacking he took his last time out from these Rangers.
On the opposite side of the hill will be Vicente Padilla, facing off against the A’s offense, who will try to provide DiNardo with some run support.
Another win today will get the A’s to just one game under .500, and will go a long way towards securing third place. This season is not what we expected, nor hoped for, but it’s still fun seeing the A’s win; especially when the games are a rookie showcase.

Hope Blevins pitches today.
I'm eager to see the stuff that produced those Nintendo numbers in the minors.
considering
all the injuries, it's still pretty amzing that we can sniff the .500 mark. these kids can play and all of this game experience can only help our cause. now if we can just get that one guy in the lineup who can give us 35 and 110-115, we'll be back in the hunt in '08. maybe my green and gold colored glasses won't allow me to see otherwise, but I have been pleased with the effor this year.
Man, I sould like Geren. His glass is always half full. Speaking of, he did a good job in his rookie season.
C'mon Lenny and crew...
Sweep the Rangers. And, I am also looking forward to Blevins and seeing if he's a solid option for the BP. Hopefully, Lenny pitches well to place himself as the front runner for the #5 spot... Since I do not (repeat do not) want to read a headline this off season that says something along the lines of A's desperate for left handed pitching take a chance on Shawn Estes. Nothing personal agian Shawn but c'mon...

I saw Barton leading off,
and thought What the hell??? But it makes sense. He's not the prototypical lead off guy, but he shows a good eye and will get on base a lot by hit or walk. The rest of the line up is a bit odd (Ellis the clean up hitter!) but Geren has done a good job juggling the lineup all year long, and what the hell, it'll be interesting to see how the players perform in this order.
MLB Website
I'm trying to listen to the game online at mlb.com. But I don't hear any sound
(yes, speakers are on, and just listened to audio and video clips so I know it works.)
Anybody else have this problem?
What?
I can't hear you!
NOT FUNNY!
I'm panicking over here!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
In case you still can't hear,
the first pitch was bounced foul. Stay tuned for more updates.
Second pitch also bounced foul.
Oops, gotta go. Back in a couple hours with more updates!
The problem of mlb.com sucking?
Yes, I have that same problem.
I'm actually hoping Blevins DOESN'T pitch,
since today is (grrrrrrrrrrrrrr) not televised. Give him a little extra rest--he pitched a lot last week--and unveil him tomorrow when I can see him!
How was the reception?
Did they like the cold pizza and warm beer you brought?
It was okay.
I had to be the DD. Then I had to leave early because my cousin's son got sick and I was the only one sober enough to care for a child.
Sorry it wasn't more exciting
On the other hand, it's better than having a Padilla-Swisher break out.
Two days in a row
and the game is not on T.V?? I think this is the first time this has happened this season, which is really a good thing compared to former years. But the Giants are just as bad!!! why do we have to suffer through their games still? I guess the only condolance you get is that you might get to see some D Backs games too...
No, I'm fine, thanks n/t
Dude, I wanna see this.
What a BEAST!
WOOOOO!!!
Rangers' announcers defending Swish
"If you're Swisher, what else can you think?"
Also saying that it certainly looked like Padilla was throwing at him, though it doesn't make any sense that he'd do that in the 1st.
Padilla...
HE GONE!

Not sure if Padilla did it on purpose (probably)
Or if he just sucks (like the rest of the Rangers SPers).

"Look at the replay again...
one of the A's players comes flying in, I coulda swore it was Adam Melhuse!"
Even the Rangers' announcers can't believe he's actually on the field during a game.
Now technically...
If DJ lands a punch, could we qualify that as a hit to move his BA up and get towards that .250 to make him more tradable...
(Yes, I'm kidding).
by AsWin on Sep 16, 2007 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions
Too bad the Rangers don't have anyone worth
hitting with a pitch.
Padilla is such a little bitch.
Can you blame them?
From the first pitch it looked like he was intent on at least brushing back Swisher. Padilla is an inveterate hothead. No surprise to anyone involved.
Damn it!
I was looking forward to another back-to-back-to-back homeruns from Padilla.
replay shows padilla with swish down on ground an
hes pulling back his arm to hit swish with a fist and catcher got him off
by smasfan on Sep 16, 2007 1:32 PM PDT reply actions
I'd love for Geren to take the
high road and order his guys not to retaliate. I feel bad that Wash is going to have to try to defend Padilla after the game.
isnt this like the 3 time hes gotting hit this
series?
by smasfan on Sep 16, 2007 1:35 PM PDT reply actions
I know it's horrible of me...
violence is bad, etc... but Swish looking and going all whiskey tango was a hot.
I htought that, too. When Kurt was holding him
back it was nice to see that emotion and nice looking face.
Can I get some narration?
So, VP in typical form throws several times at Swish, whom he eventually hits. What happens next?
swisher ran right out to the mound and tackled
him low to the ground. then both benches emptied
by smasfan on Sep 16, 2007 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions
and Padilla had his glove and hat off with fists
at the ready. Fortunately, he didn't get a chance to punch Swish. Must have watched too many Nolan Ryan reruns.
It hits Swish,
Swish charges the mound. Goes for a take down, but Padilla wiggles around and Swish only gets one leg. They sort of wrestle around until the benches clear. Jack Hannahan flies across the screen. Suzuki is holding Swish back. Geren is yelling.
Swisher charges the mound and tries to tackle
Padilla to the ground. He straight away shows why he doesn't play pro football and ends up in prime position for a thumping by Padilla, only for a Ranger to stop him. Benches clear, someone comes flying over the top of the pile, Suzuki holds back Swish, Geren argues a lot.
What happened yesterday?
I know Swish was hit by the Rangers the other day, but did something happen yesterday?
I WANT TO SEE HIM!!!!!!

by smasfan on Sep 16, 2007 1:39 PM PDT reply actions
Swisher was toast if the Ranger doesn't stop
Padilla. Other than that there was a lot of people just breaking up the fight (for example Kinsler got a hold of Barton, who was on first).
Why are the A's..

I agree...
Every year, some idiot TX supposed know it all claims that they have an up and coming staff... truth is, of the entire pitching staff (RP and SP included) I'd only want C.J. Wilson. The rest make Meyer's 2 2/3 fiasco look like a gem.

So we don't get laird today. :-(
Or he'd be my choice to hit for looking so much

Oh Jack Cust.
I bet you can't wait until 2008 and you don't have to play right field anymore.
Don't worry. Me too.
He's an awful Outfielder
by athleticsBB4life on Sep 16, 2007 1:50 PM PDT reply actions
So is Cust
Lonnie Smith bad? Greg Luzinski bad? Do we have to invent a whole new category?
Yahoo! *FAST* On the Fight Recap
From here: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap?gi...
"Rangers pitcher Vicente Padilla and Athletics outfielder Nick Swisher were ejected in the first inning on Sunday after Swisher was hit in the ribs by a pitch and rushed the mound.
Swisher, who was hit by a pitch from Bill White on Saturday, tackled Padilla and both benches cleared. Oakland third baseman Jack Hannahan dove into the pile while A's manager Bob Geren remained in a heated argument with the umpires."
Regarding Cust's Defense...
If he is so bad, does that mean Barton and DJ would be that much worse out there? The fact DJ is at DH and Cust is in LF says something. Can Barton ever play OF?
They might just be seeing if he improves
with more playing time.
And yeah, I'd imagine Barton could be worse in the OF, given his lack of experience there, and the last thing we want to do is mess up his head and possibly screw up his hitting.
I think Lenny is just pissed that he
can't retaliate and it's distracting him.
That's weird because I read this morning that the
guy who was accusing him changed his mind and just wants it all to be over "because my health is not good". Also said something about them being friends.
He does have a history of acquittals...
One of the trials gained national attention if I remember correctly.
I was just thinking Geren should pull him
now in mid-AB and thankfully he did.
I'd never thought I'd write this but...
Lenny is doing worse than Meyer and Braden. Woo hoo, more question marks behind our 2008 rotation of Haren, Blanton, Gaudin and let's pray for a win.
by AsWin on Sep 16, 2007 1:58 PM PDT reply actions
Don't worry about Lenny
He'll be back in a few years as a slugging OF.
Jon Garland anyone??
Apparently he can be had with 2 solid RP... Not saying we should but looks tempting compared to the mass question marks we have.
by AsWin on Sep 16, 2007 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions
Garland's the type of the pitcher the A's like--
throws strikes, relies on location. Not sure what CWS would ask from us. What's his contract status?
Don't know what the rest of the contract's like
but he's making 10 million this year.
I think the rest of it is...
around the $10 million range as well. Not exactly cheap but we do have the money with what we have saved so far. And being from California, there is a better chance to sign an extension to remain in CA.
by AsWin on Sep 16, 2007 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions
Signed through 2008 season..
Which means unless we offer an extention he'd be a one year A'er. As I said before he is available for 2 RP. I'm assuming Duke would have to be one and in the past they have asked for Street. Personally, I'd be highly tempted since he would solve some of our SP rotation doubts.
by AsWin on Sep 16, 2007 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions
Oh God no
Garland is a slop-baller -- a poor man's Joe Blanton. I don't think he's worth it at all. Average ERA, tons of hits, not many Ks.
Why would we trade Duke
for a one-year, $10 million, back of the rotation underachiever? Casilla maybe, and even then only if we didn't have to pay the entire contract.
Well...
It's not for certain you'd have to give up Duke. I was just speculating. And any deal would require the CWS to pay some of that salary. As for why, to answer some of our SP problems and he is better than what the FA market is offering. Not to mention, acquiring him via trade means you don't have to part with any part of your SP rotation already.
by AsWin on Sep 16, 2007 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions
Good for Bob Geren--
a very Leyland-like move not to wait until the AB was over, at which point it might well be 3-2...or 6-2. Takes Lenny out with the count 2-0; I like it. Very proactive.
Of course unfortunately,
Ruddy Lugo sucks.
No worries--we like to
give up a 6-spot early before coming back to beat Texas.
So let's see...So far in 2 innings...
Bases loaded nobody out = shallow pop fly
Bases loaded one out = DP ball
2 on nobody out = strikeout
Nice situational hitting, guys!
I fully expect to see a Jack Hannahan...

It's a metaphor for A's and Ranger's fans...
Texas broadcasters were talking about the
integrity of Sept callups and whether it's fair to have a large pool from which to choose. It's not like only the good teams get to expand, they all do. Not sure why there would be an argument.
September Call ups only really help two teams
teams that have already clinched and just want to rest some of their vets...
or..
teams that are out of it and want to get a look at some prospects for next year, ala Barton, Crosby, Swisher, et al.
But teams that are in races usually just keep playing their vets, even if it is to their cost (think Macha playing Mulder, Hatteberg and co even when Mulder was clearly horrible and the rest of the team was playing dead).
not really
Gives you more options for games that are 95% won / lost also, even if in the hunt.
Also think F Rod, for the Angles in 200?. He was a late callup, and helped them win the WS.
Game Channel of the game is horrible today...
Came here to get some updates and find out what I am missing and no one is talking about the current actions of the game which last I knew the A's were winning 8-7 in sixth inning.
11-8 Tex in the top of 8th
Darn, hoped they would win this one as
well as the remainder of series. Oh, well, need some good draft picks so lose and get better picks. Course our leading gm will not see it that way wanting the cheaper picks instead.
