Open Thread: Game 151 - A's vs. Rangers

The A’s face off against the Rangers for the last time this season, as they try to sweep the four game series on their quest for .500. Lenny DiNardo will try to wind down his season on a positive note after the shellacking he took his last time out from these Rangers.

On the opposite side of the hill will be Vicente Padilla, facing off against the A’s offense, who will try to provide DiNardo with some run support.

Another win today will get the A’s to just one game under .500, and will go a long way towards securing third place. This season is not what we expected, nor hoped for, but it’s still fun seeing the A’s win; especially when the games are a rookie showcase.

Hope Blevins pitches today.

I'm eager to see the stuff that produced those Nintendo numbers in the minors.

So it goes.

considering

all the injuries, it's still pretty amzing that we can sniff the .500 mark. these kids can play and all of this game experience can only help our cause. now if we can just get that one guy in the lineup who can give us 35 and 110-115, we'll be back in the hunt in '08. maybe my green and gold colored glasses won't allow me to see otherwise, but I have been pleased with the effor this year.

Man, I sould like Geren. His glass is always half full. Speaking of, he did a good job in his rookie season.

C'mon Lenny and crew...

Sweep the Rangers.  And, I am also looking forward to Blevins and seeing if he's a solid option for the BP.  Hopefully, Lenny pitches well to place himself as the front runner for the #5 spot... Since I do not (repeat do not) want to read a headline this off season that says something along the lines of A's desperate for left handed pitching take a chance on Shawn Estes.  Nothing personal agian Shawn but c'mon...

I saw Barton leading off,

and thought What the hell???  But it makes sense.  He's not the prototypical lead off guy, but he shows a good eye and will get on base a lot by hit or walk.  The rest of the line up is a bit odd (Ellis the clean up hitter!) but Geren has done a good job juggling the lineup all year long, and what the hell, it'll be interesting to see how the players perform in this order.

Swisher, who was hit by a pitch from Bill White on Saturday, tackled Padilla and both benches cleared. Oakland third baseman Jack Hannahan dove into the pile while A's manager Bob Geren remained in a heated argument with the umpires."

I think the rest of it is...

around the $10 million range as well.  Not exactly cheap but we do have the money with what we have saved so far.  And being from California, there is a better chance to sign an extension to remain in CA.

by AsWin on Sep 16, 2007 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Signed through 2008 season..

Which means unless we offer an extention he'd be a one year A'er.  As I said before he is available for 2 RP.  I'm assuming Duke would have to be one and in the past they have asked for Street. Personally, I'd be highly tempted since he would solve some of our SP rotation doubts.

Well...

It's not for certain you'd have to give up Duke.  I was just speculating.  And any deal would require the CWS to pay some of that salary.  As for why, to answer some of our SP problems and he is better than what the FA market is offering.  Not to mention, acquiring him via trade means you don't have to part with any part of your SP rotation already.

I really hope he ends up succeeding.
A friend of mine, a Devil Rays fan, met him a few times and thought he was the nicest baseball player he has ever spoken with. He was of the opinion that he just needed more time and seasoning to be effective, but it's looking less like that's the case every day.

Thome

Not to take the focus away from this scintillating, flawlessly played contest, but Jim Thome hit his 500th home run in the bottom of the 9th today, to win the game. Against the Angels, no less.

Kind of cool.

Texas broadcasters were talking about the

integrity of Sept callups and whether it's fair to have a large pool from which to choose.  It's not like only the good teams get to expand, they all do.  Not sure why there would be an argument.

Oakland - where opposing pitchers go to lower their ERA

by kapers on Sep 16, 2007 3:21 PM PDT reply actions

September Call ups only really help two teams

teams that have already clinched and just want to rest some of their vets...

or..

teams that are out of it and want to get a look at some prospects for next year, ala Barton, Crosby, Swisher, et al.

But teams that are in races usually just keep playing their vets, even if it is to their cost (think Macha playing Mulder, Hatteberg and co even when Mulder was clearly horrible and the rest of the team was playing dead).

by Zonis on Sep 16, 2007 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions

not really

Gives you more options for games that are 95% won / lost also, even if in the hunt.

Also think F Rod, for the Angles in 200?. He was a late callup, and helped them win the WS.

by MobiusKlein on Sep 16, 2007 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions

but in general, September Callups

can not make the Playoff Roster.

In KRod's case, the Angels used a loophole via injury.

Darn, hoped they would win this one as

well as the remainder of series.  Oh, well,  need some good draft picks so lose and get better picks.  Course our leading gm will not see it that way wanting the cheaper picks instead.
