Open Game Thread: Game 148 - A's vs. Rangers
The A's and Chad Gaudin with a 10-11 record and a 4.47 ERA take on the Rangers and Kevin Millwood with a 9-11 record and a 5.31 ERA.
It's kind of funny that the A's happen to be taking on the Rangers in Oakland tonight. It was three years ago tonight that Rangers reliever Frank Francisco threw a chair into the A's crowd and hit a woman in the nose. Francisco hasn't exactly had a stellar career since the incident. But I wonder if he's going to be paying for the woman he hit to attend the game as his guest tonight? Ah, probably not.
Chad Gaudin has been going downhill quickly since the All Star break. Before the break he was 8-3 with a 2.44 ERA and since the break he has been 2-8 with a 7.01 ERA. I've been stating over and over again that Gaudin just hasn't looked like the same pitcher with the same break on his pitches as he had before the break. I'm hoping that it's just because this is his first full season as a part of a major league rotation, but he's becoming one of my major concerns when thinking ahead to 2007.
Any way, the A's starting lineup looks like this:
Stewart
Barton
Swisher
Cust
Ellis
Johnson
Scutaro
Hannahan
Bowen
I love the decision to try and get Barton as many ABs as possible and batting him second. Why not maximize his ABs this year and give him that taste? Not only that, but his patience should help at the top of the order if the rest of the hitters would wake up.
The Rangers lineup looks like this:
Catalanotto
Kinsler
Young
Byrd
Botts
Blalock
Murphy
Saltalamacchia
Vazquez
All the Rangers need to do is get Grudzielanek and Mientkiewicz on their team and they will officially have some of the hardest names to spell in baseball. Course, Young, Byrd and Botts kind of mess that up...
LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!!

Still alive in the division race!
This should be quite a battle between the A's and Rangers tonight...winner still has a chance at the division title, loser is mathematically eliminated. Go A's! The 15-game winning streak starts tonight.
Fosse is really outdoing himself in his radio interview with Bobby Crosby. ("How frustrating is it, knowing that you were hitting well, after working so hard in spring training, then starting to hit well, how frustrating is it..." etc."
Would you really
Would you really expect any local broadcaster to call out an injured player on the pregame show for how horrible he has been in his career?
"Bobby, how frustrating has it been to have yet another season where you were performing poorly to be interrupted by injury yet again? We all know you're injured right now, but are you spending your time learning what a slider is? I heard wikipedia has a pretty good explanation of it."
I hope with only Soaker and me here so far
it means the rest of AN is at the game. Choice seats apparently. Will the attendance break the Marlins low of 200 people yesterday?
just contract them already
Jeffery Loria doesn't deserve a team anyways after killing the Expos (why the hell did they allow him to get another team anyways?)
2 runs!!! Thanks Jack!
Millwood very hittable tonight
I'm here.
I fell asleep last night. A good thing apparently.
I'm looking forward to Offseason AN already
One of the nicest things about the proliferation of baseball blogs is the way it's turned the sport into something you can follow 365 days a year. Used to be, you were lucky to get a couple of baseball articles a week in the newspaper from the end of the winter meetings through January.

i love sour cream with salsa
It's the consistency of sour cream
but tastes like salsa and SC mixed... It's a little spicy like it has some extra seasoning in it. LOVE it with tortilla chips.

That Fit day for kids that was advertised: my son's school is going and I'm chaperoning. Got $2 tickets. Wonder if the kids will notice the irony of me scarfing down supreme nachos and garlic fries?
Marlon Byrd needs to fly out of the AL West next
season.
Well first of all..
Kudos to having an early lead. Hopefully we will be able to maintain it.
As for Gaudin, who knows.. it could easily be growing pains. Or it could be a concern of consistency. Being so new to the staff, it is hard to know. Then there is always the thought of can you acquire another FA next year a la Lenny that can do the same thing. I'm in the camp that if a SP needs to be moved in the off season, sorry but it has to be Chad. Although, ideally I'd like to see how he develops.

daric barton <3
I need to buy new jersey t-shirts next year. I hope they have one for TBuck
blah they would
I haven't made it up to Oakland this season :(
true true
Maybe I'll ask for some for Christmas haha :) I actually got my Swisher shirt at spring training last year.
I got my Buck one off mlb.com
My son has Huston's.
I'd like Swisher and Haren.
I only have Swisher and Street
but my friends have some other ones (I really want an Ellis one, too!) so sometimes I mix it up with those. :)
The ones I have have all been hurt...
except Swish...
Kotsay
Harden
Chavy
Street
Buck
I also have two Swish's (white and green) but I'm always scared to wear it for fear I'd injure him.
Swish is alive.
ALIVE. HE'S STILL ALIVE!
nice, swish, did not expect that.
Yay!
The Swisher I like!
Ah, great.
It's Dan "Sacramento" Johnson.
In a way...
I do feel sorry for him because he has to be thinking of sand going through hour glasses and travel brochures.

I think Soaker is right.
He'll land on a MLB team somewhere. Eventually. Maybe.
lol...I was thinking the same thing.
Perhaps we will see the news account of a strange burning object entering the atmosphere over the skies of Florida. We'll all know what it is.
Strike Three?
That pitch looked to be 4 inches off the plate.
Name the 3 A's who have started
at least 38 games in 3 different positions in one year.
That's the trivia question.
Just guessing here
Tony Phillips, Mike Gallego...
That's 2. Does SH count as a position? If so, Jason Giambi is my third guess.
MB
I guessed Swish too!
Well first I thought Scutaro, but then I realized it was more like 2nd one year and SS the next and he didn't really play any other positions much... and then I was like oh duh Swisher between his OF positions and 1B he should totally have enough this year haha
Payton didn't even cross my mind.
Surprised Phillips didn't make it
I knew Swish. But cheating now and looking up Phillips, he did it at 2 positions with the A's a few times but never came close to 3 positions.
Ray guessed Phillips...
and the truck told him that he wasn't on the list. That's the only reason I knew he wasn't on the list.
You know what's wrong with our pitchers?
The offense has screwed them so much this year that they are trying to be to fine with their control. One mistake and they are screwed...and they know it.
I absoutely agree.
Especially I've noticed it with Danny, he feels that he needs to pitch a near perfect game every time out there to make up for lack of offensive support.
Which if we do get better offensively (the return of Buck and Chavez will help), we could have two 20+ game winners (Danny and Joe) in 2008.

So....does Barton really suck
at first or what?
I always like when Swisher plays First.
But then perhaps that's because I enjoy watching him stretch to dig out those low throws.
Thursday evening games
I wonder if a lot of people showed up at noon? The A's rarely play at home on a Thursday night.
Barton reminds me of a young Giambi

Billy Beane won't trade Barton,
because he knows that if he does he'll have to go straight into the Witness Protection Program.
<sharpens knife, reloads gun, orders refill of arsenic>
We could then have...
A CY winner (Danny), a ROY winner (Barton), and a MVP winner next year (Chavez.. yes, I am still hopeful)
Might look like fantasy to some, but hey...

I don't think I could find
enough "special" brownies to have that sort of vision. (Although truthfully, I do wish Kotsay the best if he is still with us next year).

Right down to them trying him at 3B
at Sacramento earlier this season. Giambi at 3B was not a good thing to watch. However, it wasn't as bad as McGwire at 3B, the ugliest experiment of all time.
McGwire had to play 3B
How else were they gonna get Rob Nelson's bat into the lineup? Weren't they called the "Towers of Power" or something?
Yeah, that was hilarious
There was no hope that Nelson could play anything other than 1B, so McGwire was the one they moved around. I recall him starting in RF a few times too so both Nelson and McGwire could be in the lineup.
I was at spring training in 1987 when the McGwire 3B experiment was at its height. Good grief...just pathetic.
Didn't Mac also play RF
for the Olympic team, so that Will Clark could play 1B?
You know, looking at Nelson's minor league stats, there's another Cust. He hit for power, walked a lot, struck out a lot, and never got any real chance in the majors.
I thought
that McGwire played first, due to his better defense.
Sounds right
McGwire did not make a fool of himself in RF the way he did at 3B. Remember, though, that was the skinny young McGwire...not the bulked-up cartoon character who hit the 70 HRs.
closetasfan: There were a few games in early 1987 when Nelson and McGwire were both in the lineup; Nelson played 1B and McGwire played elsewhere, either 3B or RF. That was the year Reggie Jackson finished his career with the A's so he was usually the DH.
yes, i thought that after seeing his
first plate appearances the other night.
Wow...a SS with a bat.
I always wondered what one of those looked like....I vaguely recall a guy who wore number 4, but it seems so long ago.
Hugh...that's funny.
I think he's using it to prop a window open.
His great wood remains a mystery to us all...
Just like Britney Spear's dancing ability.

Pure fantasy trade..
but why oh why can't Billy trade for JJ Hardy, SS problem solved. (Yes, I know it isn't a reality)
by AsWin on Sep 13, 2007 8:39 PM PDT up reply actions
At this point
I'd take a Pennington type who doesn't get our hopes up about his bat. Crosby drives me nuts cuz everyone in the world knows what he should be doing, except for him.
Crosby should pick up the Secret

I'll take Chad Pennington-type.

mmm jj hardy
I approve of this trade.
Because Ray....
the home plate ump doesn't need to see in order to make the call. He knows what a strike is...because he just knows.

And give it to Cust in the OF
so that he doesn't look like a penguin stuck in Madagascar out there...
by AsWin on Sep 13, 2007 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions
And what? Give it to Harden?
Maybe he could pitch with it?
Hey, that was the Dogfather
in that foul ball in the crowd shot. Not the guy with the Fingers 'stache, the guy in the black windbreaker nearby.

Check the username.
Self explanatory.
Sorry but I'd rather have Danny here any day
(and Barton too).

What? You really would prefer those two
over another broke arm pitcher? Why? Because we're the A's...and we never have enough broke dick pitchers.
But think of it this way...
Had we kept Mark, Rich would have someone to talk to while continuously rehabing.

This comment
reminds me of a picture... i need to find it now...
ugh I am having no luck
It's the picture with Harden and (I believe) Tim Hudson making D L with their hands while sitting on recliners in the clubhouse. I wish I could find it on my computer! lol
I remember when rehabing meant you had a problem
worthy of interest. At least back then a person would have some really great pre-rehab stories.
Kids today are giving re-hab a piss poor name.
Now it's an excuse
to not show up to work, and gain exposure on a national magazine... yay! (note: yes, I am being sarcastic)

Not like the old days...
near death experiences. Really embarrassing incidents. Good times!
Nice DP!
Also nice to see the NFL come down hard on Beli-ache and the Patriots. Now if they could only have done something about that tuck rule ...
I'd like to have seen a suspension
Honestly, spying on the Jets? Did he not see their preseason games?
Oh look.
DJ at the plate with bases loaded. Gee, I wonder what's going to happen.
Sadly, true.
I actually feel bad for him. Being called out on pitches by this blue is a joke. But then again, the ump probably told him, "Hey, the Rangers suck, you guys suck, and you personally suck. I'm not going to squat out here all night and watch you guys take pitches. So you bitches better swing the bats and get this over with."
This game
is one of those games where, after the national anthem, and all the pre-game festivities are done, with all 6000 fans going wild, the umpire bends over home plates, make a weak attempt to blow the dirt off, and says, "Well, let's get this over with".
I had a much better reply to that typed
...but thanks to the preview button, I had an opportunity to cancel it, and I thought cancelling was a better idea.
He's going to enter the record books
And start to run towards first before the first pitch... nah, he's gonna K.
by AsWin on Sep 13, 2007 9:18 PM PDT reply actions
Note to DJ..
If you are gonna K with the bases loaded, make it at least dramatic.. I mean Naiomi Campbell style.

Not a terrible outing haha
I thought it was going to be much worse early on for some reason. Good to see him going over 6 innings and leave with a lead.
Oh, it's not over yet.
Except for Chad.
Yeah, I meant Gaudin's outing
haha Early on in the game I didn't think he was pitching very well... but he managed to get out of everything and leave with a lead. Who knows how the rest of the game will go lol
Casilla HBP
Since he just hit all three guys (batter, catcher, ump) shouldn't the batter get three bases?
Dont! Get! Eliminated!
WE SUCK.
Specifically Casillas sucks.
lol...yes he did.
He sucked when he was that other guy too.
Is it me or...
does Castilla seem to be streaky.. either he's good or awful.
Don't get me wrong, I still like the kid.. just wondering.

oooooo
bet it all, Soaker! bet it all!!!!
It's a Video Daily Double!
The Texas Rangers outfielder, who, as seen in this video, had a fly ball bounce off his head and over the fence for a home run.
When he first came up to the A's
he was horrible defensively. But he worked at it and improved. La Russa moved him from LF to RF and he worked hard at that too. In 1988-1989 I thought he was average to slightly above average defensively. Then, he decided that being seen with Madonna was more important than working on his defensive skills. When he was traded while he was standing in the on-deck circle, I screamed with delight...although Ruben Sierra turned out to be even worse.
You rang?

The Dodgers just beat the Padres 6-3, I was hoping that the A's would beat the Rangers 6-3 too.

Scoot acts like a clown sometimes.
It's funny as hell.
lol
that was great. I love this team.
Somewhere...
Dan Johnson is rolling over in his grave.
I think it's Omaha.
Could be Sacramento.
800 miles or so?
...
the passengers can't decide if they'd rather stay or leave.
Get Dan on his cell phone and ask him
sometime in late March of 08.
I'd go
for the College World Series... but that's about it.
and the corn chowder
and cornbread... and corn flakes... and corny jokes, like this one... and corns on my feet...
So now the ump
decides that pitch is a ball?
Amazing isn't it?
Wow.
I was on the phone with someone in Beijing for all of that half- inning and I'm sure she wondered why I seemed distracted.
The drums are coming across very well on TV
One of my goals in life
is to someday play a drum in the LF bleachers. I think I have to wait until next season though.
It's not DrmChk... it's drmmerchk
Drmmerchk just checks on the Drummers, not the drums.
Oh I've drummed plenty
just not in the bleachers. Yet. I have to pick which drum I'm gonna use and wrap it in A's paper or something first... I'm going all out. I just gotta get up to Oakland and get a ticket and stuff. And I want to send a message to some of the full time bleacher drummers (haha) to let them know I'm coming. It's going to be great!
I'm in time for the last 2 innings!
Alright!
Here's your recap...
Yea! Yea! Oh Shit! Yea! Yea! Yea! Yea! Oh Shit! Oh Shit! Oh Shit! Oh Shit!
WOOOO!!!
Nice DP!!!
The interesting thing about C.J. Wilson
is that he posts on SBN site Lone Star Ball as user "blueglovelefty". It wouldn't shock me if an A's player or two posts on AN...but C.J. acknowledges who he is on the blog. He also has a blog on mlb.com.
We have Ziggy! :)
That would be interesting if other players posted here or read stuff, though.
Is Street warming up? I need to go to bed and
I don't want the A's to blow the lead in the 9th.
Seriously, kapers - you've made it this far.
I'll Stay thru this inning, but not extras. I
have a Dr appt an hour before work so I'm getting up earlier than normal. And if he blows this lead, I'll just be irritated.
1 down, 2 to go
Hah. and like i can talk
I got here 5 minutes ago.
Adios!!!
Celebrate good times, come on!
Hey hey hey
winning is fun, even when there is little point to it except for:
- Still mathematically alive
- Stay out of last place
