'W'hen all is said and done...
The A's got a win today. It doesn't matter how. Oh, it does?
Well then. The A's scored early off Halladay, but were stifled the rest of the game until they finally broke through in the eleventh for the win.
The early runs might have held up, but Huston Street allowed not one, but two solo homeruns in his failed bid for the save, forcing Ruddy Lugo to pitch two scoreless innings, giving the A's the chance to come back.
Hanahan drove in the winning run, Piazza and Scutaro also drove in runs, and DiNardo pitched effectively, if not well, in his five innings of work today.
In other news, Esteban Loaiza was claimed off waivers by the Dodgers today; a move which probably looks like a good one for him, at least regarding the pennant race this year.
The A's enjoy a rare home off-day tomorrow, before Detroit comes to town. That should be fun.
Final Score: A's: 5, Blue Jays 4 in 11

OT
Beckett getting hit hard. (helping Haren's chances just a tad?) and Clemens 0er after 3.
Huston seems to get lucky with the team bailing out his blown saves, where I think Embree got hit with Ls on his blown saves!
I had a feeling
Not surprised he was traded and I don't believe that comment it wasn't about money because it was. I just hope BB takes the money saved with kendal, kenedy, loaiza, and spend it on a real firstbaseman or a good hitting CFer. Barton is not the answer folks. We need a power hitting first baseman in the middle of the order. Cust can be our DH and hit in front of a real firstbaseman. Also resign Stewart and I will be happy. Aslo say goodbye to colero.
Hmm...Barton isn't the answer
because he might hit .300 but doesn't have a lot of power...but you want Shannon Stewart re-signed? Must be his arm.
Always about $e06
Even Steinbalzac does that. (well, $e08 for him)
The real question is what does BB do with the $.
Runs batted in
I did not have the opportunity to see the game but I believe Bowen hit in 2 in the 3rd to make it 4-2 game until the ninth.
Just looking at the lineups from the Game Thread
I'm gratified that the scientific consensus seems to support my theory about Reed Johnson's furry facial excrescence.
Yup -- your pelt ref beat me by 3 days ...
... but I still like the clubhouse shower drain image better.

Ray Fosse
In the seventh, with the Blue Jays batting, he said, "Weak ground ball. I think he cracked his bat." But I swear I thought he said, "I think he crapped his pants." Anybody else hear it that way?
Did Ken yell,
"Get up!"? And if so, which phrase does it suggest?
No he didn't
But I sure got the impression that Vince has a serious man-crush on Halladay. Or maybe just a crush-crush. He couldn't say enough good things about the guy. Now I'm not saying that Halladay isn't a talented pitcher, but I think that gushing about him for 2 or 3 innings is just about enough. STFU already!

This is my first time to comment here. Hello world.
I've been reading this website for a few years now, and although I don't always agree with what you have to say, I always appreciate your enthusiasm for the game and the insider information that you bring to the table. So thank you.
It's been a tough year for us A's fans, but the great thing about baseball is that there's always next year. Maybe things will come together before the end of the year, maybe they won't. But, I'm looking forward to see what the young guns can do, no mater what the results.
Hang in there A's fans.
current payroll
minus bradley, kendall, loaiza, kennedy, witasick, etc.
anybody know what it's at right now? i'm too lazy to calculate. :)
About
A buck and a half, plus we're responsible for half this month's PG&E bill, so turn off the AC.

I add it up as $51,105,650
$27,825,650 to 25 players on the active roster
$23,280,000 to 9 players on the DL
(Per Cot's)
Which does not include...
The $7,402,186 they are paying to 3 players for not playing for them (Kendall, Bradley and Witasick).
And the $5million "bonus"
to Larry Davis not to post those photos on his MySpace page.
...
Scutaro doesn't appear to be all that thrilled with celebrating another "Senor Clutch" moment, at least in this photo

Maybe it's the Venezuelan Vertigo

He has VERTIGO!
Don't slap him on the head!
Maybe Larry Davis thought
it would help cure Scoot's vertigo if they focused on the aura to help realign the chakras

why Barton is not the answer
When I hear his name I keep thinking of another Scott hatteberg. Sorry but a guy that will have a high OBA but no power. Hatty might be a better potion at first atleast we know he can feild something Barton has trouble doing. The funny thing is Jeremy Brown has a higher OPS than Barton. We need a big power bat which the team lacks. Besides Cust and Swisher none of the other players are homerun hitters. Just like Haladay did today pitch around batters.
Does it have to be a power bat?
Or someone who can just drive in runs? High RBI total would work, no? I think Barton gets a lot of doubles.

Sean Casey for example?
I don't think the guy hits so many HRs. He's played for several teams, but the Tigers were the first winning club he's been on.
I think you'd have to go to the 1980's Cardinals for a team that succeeded with no HR threat at first.

Guys like Boggs, and Gwynn, and Carew,
who don't have the power of Brett and Mattingly, transcend "nice BA" or "nice OBA" to become impact hitters--pure hitters who hit with RISP, and hit in the clutch, because they simply hit, hit, hit.
Barton has a chance to become one of these special "pure hitters," the guy who can put up .300/.400 stats with a lot of doubles and a lot of contact--and at just age 22 it's certainly too early to say he won't be all that. At 22, already with a big league batting eye and a sweet hitting stroke. A perfect #2 hitter in the making? A guy who could hit as high as .330 some year soon? He's exciting to me.
Keith Hernandez played on two WS champs
..the 1982 Cardinals (leader in HRs=19! Keith had seven) and the 1986 Mets.
Hernandez HR totals sometimes hit 12-18...somewhere in there. Wes Parker never hit many for a couple of good Dodger teams in the 1960s.

Beane will be active over the winter
While Beane is cleaning house, finish the job and cast off Chavez, Kotsy and Crosby. I'm liking Hanahan better everyday. Give him the starting job at 3rd base next season.

I'd like to see
Chavez, Kots and Cros gone too.
The current team is more interesting to me. I like Hanny and Donnie Murphy.
Oh and I have a wish. I wish I could watch them at least one game on TV before the season ends. Rough being a NRAF. I don't think I've even seen one at bat by Cust yet.
Rebuilding is good, but let's keep the foundation
Why do people think we need to get rid of everyone on this team? This team went to the post-season last year. Yeh, it will be nice to have some "cap space" if the owners use it to find a bat or two--not if they pocket it.
Ellis must stay. He is soo steady and there is no slowdown in his defensive skills. In fact they may be better this year than ever. He has a litle power, too. And if you foresee a young infield (Hannahan, Murphy, Barton), he can mentor, too. Have you noticed that whoever plays along side him at 2nd looks better than without him? Ellis should go nowhere--no matter how old he is.
Crosby should be told that he needs to find a shrink and a batting coach in the offseason and figure out why he insists on standing 12 feet from the plate. If he is afraid of being hit, then maybe it is time to quit baseball. I would suggest winterball so he can work at moving closer to the plate so he can have some chance against those outside pitches. If he won't do it, then trade him.
I love Duke and would like to see him back. We can afford to pay him as I believe that he is a stabilizing force in the bullpen. We have missed him tremendously this year. He is solid and gets outs. I am hopeful that the surgery will allow him to pitch many more years. I believe Isringhausen had it and he is back doing well.
Chavez should stay, too if he will get healthy. If it means surgery, then do it. I am sure he must be tired of all of this. But if rehabbing won't do it, then he must have surgery. I think he could be a force again--and while I like Hannahan alot, we will miss that defense at 3rd.
Ellis, Crosby (on our terms), Chavez(with surgery if needed), and Duke are the foundation that we should not be too quick to rip down.
