Open Thread: Game 135 - A's vs. Blue Jays
Well, it’s come to this: Lenny DiNardo will take the mound to try to stop Oakland’s skid, as the A’s face Toronto trying to salvage a game of this series. Welcome to the roller-coaster ride that is the Athletics right now.
According to MLB.com, most of the Blue Jays hit like Alex Rodriguez against DiNardo, so that’s something to look forward to; although you never know. He’ll probably throw a complete game shut-out.
The A’s offense will try their luck against Roy Halladay, as they have one goal: To score more runs than the Blue Jays.
I will be on a plane when lineups are announced, so I’m hoping this will summon the lineup fairy.
Loaiza was just claimed off waivers by the Dodgers. More news to follow, I imagine.
LET’S GO OAK-LAND!!!

i dont understand why
we didnt get anything back for E-Lo
by PSHABAZ on Aug 29, 2007 10:49 AM PDT reply actions
Re
Because he
A) Made two starts this year.
B) Missed a good deal of time last year.
C) Sucks.
He's a guy who relies on balls in play being backed up by the Oakland defense and a cavernous ballpark. He has no value. Consider yourselves fortunate we picked him up. You can find some other strike thrower on the open market this year, give him the same contract, and be just fine.
by regfairfield on Aug 29, 2007 11:03 AM PDT up reply actions
Thank you!!
I see everyone asking the same question. Flat out, E-Lo is high priced and sucks. He will probably spend 08' on the DL too. A's fans should have a feeling of relief today that we got this guy off of our books.
by Hawk on Aug 29, 2007 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions
Oh. You're serious.
What Is Going On?
Why do we keep giving away players that other teams want? Loaiza. Bradley. Even Kielty.
Loaiza has value. He's a middle-of-the-rotation starter at a below-market salary. The A's have serious needs and the Dodgers have a stocked farm system.
So maybe we wouldn't get LaRoche or Hu, but we could have gotten SOMETHING!
Loaiza would have been easy to trade this offseason.
I don't either . . .
if we got nothing. But I'm not convinced we got nothing. I think when a player is claimed on waivers, the team possessing him (the A's) has the right to "pull him back" ("no you can't have him"); work out a trade; or say thanks for taking our garbage and let the claiming team assume the remainder of the contract.
I would be shocked if the A's got nothing for him, but the early press releases indicate that. Maybe the details of a trade (I hope) are still not public.
by oaktownmario on Aug 29, 2007 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions
i hope you're right....but
...it doesn seem like we're getting anything based on this:
According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Dodgers have added Esteban Loaiza from the A's on a waiver claim.
The A's could have insisted on a prospect return and pulled him back if the Dodgers refused, but they instead opted to shed the approx. $8.375 million Loaiza has left on his contract. His addition figures to knock Eric Stults out of the Dodgers' rotation. Dallas Braden could get another shot in Oakland.
by PSHABAZ on Aug 29, 2007 11:13 AM PDT up reply actions
Loaiza
Dodger fan here. Can any of you who watched his latest starts give your observations? How did his stuff look?
loaiza
hes a VERY streaky pitcher. his first start he pitched great, painting corners and all his pitches looked like that had good movement, even his fastball was coming out good................. but his last start, he pitched worst than the stats show. He missed on location quiet a few times, and his velocity didnt top 90 (i dont think).
Still i think we should have got some sort of trade done rather than just letting him go...
soon we'll be reading about CHavez, Piazza, and kotsay being signed off waivers, or DFA'd, and we get nothing...again!
by PSHABAZ on Aug 29, 2007 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions
Releasing Chavez and Kotsy
That would make my day if mgt could find a way to get rid of Chavez and Kotsy. Both of them should be put on waivers too.
by Mikkoo on Aug 29, 2007 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions
What'll we get in return for this info?
He looked absolutely terrible.
TERRIBLE I SAY.
He actually looked pretty decent, but I hear his velocity is still down a notch.
more news...
Chatter from scouts in recent days indicated that the Dodgers had interest in Esteban Loaiza - and on Wednesday, Los Angeles took Loaiza on waivers and the A's decided not to pull him back. (Loaiza couldn't be run through waivers until he came off the DL last week.)
Though the A's wind up with nothing out of the deal, they will save $7 million on Loaiza next year - and they have the goodwill of the playoff-chasing Dodgers for not pulling Loaiza back. Don't be surprised to see the A's make some sort of favorable deal with LA in the next few months, unless letting Loaiza go is reward in itself for Oakland. Loaiza had pitched very well in his two starts this season, but he fought injuries much of his two seasons in Oakland. He missed the first four and a half months of this season with a bulging disk in his neck and then a knee injury.
This is also a nice pickup for the Dodgers, who have been on the lookout for starting pitching for more than a month. They don't even have to part with a lower-level prospect for an established veteran starter.
by PSHABAZ on Aug 29, 2007 11:15 AM PDT reply actions
Unless Beane has officially lost it...
I've got to believe that come a few months down the road you will see a lopsided deal of some Windsor/Komine for a prospect like LaRoche. I don't believe that he would give E-Lo away for nothing unless there was an unknown injury/arrest. Beane would have at least asked for some obscure A/AA proposect in return for basically dumping E-Lo ala Bradley.
by Miggy on Aug 29, 2007 11:24 AM PDT reply actions
Huh? So basically Beane gave him away now to
receive something great later? This makey no sensey.
Quite simple really...
Beane may want a guy that is currently on the 40-man roster that would have to clear waivers from the Dodgers side. Coletti is okay with that but can't make the trade now, it would have to wait until after the season. At the time, a low-end propsect would go over in exchange for the player that Beane wanted.

Otherwise it kind of looks like Billy's not even trying any more. Or that the $8 million is worth more than attempting to improve the team
revolving door effect
As a fan, I'm getting tired of the revolving door with the A's. Sure, so much of it is due to injuries, but it's gotten crazy. It's been the longest Spring Training ever.
by MobiusKlein on Aug 29, 2007 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions
pretty surprised
at the big zilch in return. if the A's just wanted out of Loaiza's contract they could have simply moved his locker next to the beer storage area and alterted the CHP to stop him on the way home. i'm sure multiple DUI's and jail time would have allowed the A's to void his contract.
Too bad....
No LaRoche or Hu

whether the deal is good or not..
right now, it is very frustrating to be an A's fan or even enjoy the franchise.
I'm finding it easier and easier to dislike Beane.
Actually, I never cared about Beane, I like the players on the team and right now when I turn on a game via MLB EI, I have a hard time figuring out who the hell is on the team.
Thankfully, I get to watch the Padres.

With today's lineup who would you use if not Ellis at leadoff? Cust, because of his OBP? There are very few options.

Scut - better BB / K ratio, but he's been slumpy lately.

Because of the extreme Bay Area heat

Meanwhile, as a morale-booster they just announced that there was free ice cream on the third floor, so everyone on my floor (the second) made a mad dash for the elevator. Somehow, I think we are not conserving much energy this way.

Though Harden might return before the end of the season, third baseman Eric Chavez and center fielder Mark Kotsay both might sit the rest of the way with back soreness. There hasn't been a decision on that, according to Beane, but it's a strong possibility."

Interesting Salary Dumps
Well I had to double check who we had under contract for the next few years. The only really expensive players left are Eric Chavez and Mark Kotsay(for only 1 year). This may actually be a smart move because it seems Beane has decided to blow everything up and seriously rebuild for the first time. I'd definitely like to see more good young players at this point and a ditching of most of our mistakes. At this point I'd say Kotsay and Chavez are both mistakes as well...wish that wasn't true as I like both of them! Let's just hope both of them live up to their greatest seasons for once .:) Hopefully with the large amount of freed money, we can finally do some serious offense rebuilding..it NEEDS IT!
