Open Game Thread: Game 133 - A's vs. Blue Jays
The A's and Esteban Loaiza with his 1-0 record and sparkling 1.17 ERA (yeah it's from one start, but damn it looks gooooood) take on the Blue Jays and A.J. Burnett with his 7-7 record and 3.85 ERA. I could've sworn I've seen this pitching matchup somewhere before...oh yeah, it happened just five days ago when Jack Cust turned the A's struggling offense at the time around to win 4-1.
The A's lineup tonight looks like this:
Stewart
DaVanon
Swisher
Cust
Ellis
Johnson
Scutaro
Hannahan
Suzuki
Remember five days ago, the A's suddenly looked like they were getting in their usual August shape in the midst of winning five in a row. Someone cue Green Day's Good Riddance (Time of Your Life). Since then the A's went into Tampa and got outscored in their last three games 33-9. Hopefully Loaiza can turn things around against the Jays. My goal is just to get over .500 before the season ends.
The Jays lineup looks like this:
Stairs
Overbay
Rios
Wells
Thomas
Glaus
Hill
Zaun
Olmedo
The Blue Jays are much more devastating to lefties, so hopefully, Loaiza can straighten the A's back on the winning path. And holy crap, do they really have Matt Stairs leading off? I know OBP is awesome and stuff, but man that's kind of like when the A's went with Jeremy Giambi leading off. But this would be like Jeremy Giambi with a piano strapped to his back leading off...
LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!!

but how about that tigers yankees score
I bet you could get a kings ransom for a pitcher right about now
It never really gets old
watching the Yankees get annihilated. 16 down, 15 to go, Tigers...
was just going to post a comment on this
If Jeremy Giambi tries to run
with a piano on his back, he'll soon become an organ donor.

Because it's too much to pay him
to sit two out of three days.
Question: What position do the Tigers have in mind for Maybin in 2008?
I sure wish we would have traded him..
I can count on one hand the number of games he has come up big for us, oh and I still have a couple fingers free on that hand.
What a sad replacement to Frank he has been.
by Hawk on Aug 27, 2007 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions
in fairness,
i don't think 2007 Frank would have been able to replace 2006 Frank this season. Beane caught lightning in a bottle.
I trust BB on this one but agree with you on
his overall performance. He is simply worth more to the team in regards to the draft then what BB was offered for him. Don't you feel better now? Yeah... me either :-(

I was so happy when the A's aquired him too
Ever since he participated in MTV's first 'Rock 'n Jock softball game' in the early nineties, I've been a fan
I was thrilled when the A's signed him
Now, yes it's all a bit disappointing - but I still enjoy seeing him don the green & gold...even if it is while sitting on the bench, eating sunflower seeds, reading a book, knitting, playing Pogs with Rich...whatever

could Loaiza get traded
If he pitches another great game do the A's trade him if they get a gvery good offer? He has only 1 year left so does Beane put him through waivers and hope for a good prospect for him?
He'd get claimed
easy, half dozen or more teams'd take him and his affordable rate in a heartbeat.
by FreeSeatUpgrade on Aug 27, 2007 7:27 PM PDT up reply actions
Doubtful. Pitching is all we've got around here
and I think a full season of him in '08 could make a huge difference. Those are just my two cents.

Hard to say
I think what I noticed is that he's bringing his arms over his head like they did in the '20s. Has he always done that?
Not this much. I think he is trying to add
"deception" due to the fact that he isn't throwing as hard these days. I'm sure Nico has an opinion on this one. Now that they have tied the game... I have a different opinion :-)
by ohtobe21likehuston on Aug 27, 2007 7:40 PM PDT up reply actions
I have no opinion because I can't see the game,
BECAUSE APPARENTLY "SCRUBS" AND "THAT 70S SHOW" ARE MORE IMPORTANT. GRRRRRRRRRR...

On the Angels-Mariners game
This has been the Miguel Batista I expected to see all season. He's given up tons of hits and just wild-pitched in the 6th run. Lackey hasn't been perfect, but he's been dominant. Oh well, the Mariners have Jeff Weaver going in tomorrow night's game.

Jeff Weaver?
Why do people like this guy so much? He pitched well in the minors and the first half of '02 in the majors. Beyond that, he has been either so-so or outright bad.
I don't think anyone thinks he's great.
But he's streaky and right now he's on fire. Kind of like Loiaza last August--he's not that good, but he was that particular month.
