Open Thread: Game 131 - A's at Tampa Bay
Tonight is the A's eighth Saturday night away game of the 2007 season, and the team is still searching for their first win. This task is made ever more daunting by the fact the occasionally soft-hitting club will be going up against the frequently strong-throwing Scott Kazmir, who brings a 9-8 record and 3.65 ERA to the mound in an attempt to vanquish the A's, who have voted in Joe Blanton, sporting an 11-8 record and 3.84 ERA, as their starter.
Following on the heels of Oakland's 12-2 loss to the Rays yesterday, which dropped the team back to .500 on the season, the team sees some changes at the top and bottom of their lineup. Newcomers Jeff DaVanon and Jack Hannahan are also missing.
Lineups:
Your 2007 Oakland Athletics
Shannon Stewart, LF
Marco Scutaro, SS
Nick Swisher, CF
Jack Cust, RF
Mike Piazza, DH
Mark Ellis, 2B
Dan Johnson, 1B
J.J. Furmaniak, 3B
Kurt Suzuki, C
Their 2007 Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Akinori Iwamura, 3B
Carl Crawford, LF
Carlos Peña, 1B
B.J. Upton, CF
Delmon Young, RF
Brendan Harris, 2B
Jonny Gomes, DH
Josh Wilson, SS
Josh Paul, C
Yes, that's Furmaniak at 3rd base. Maybe the A's knew this was a "Radio Only" game, and thought if we wouldn't see it, we couldn't prove it actually happened. Set your radio dials... now. Go A's!

Does it count...
if no one can see the game?
I'm watching it on EI.
This may be the shortest game
thread in AN history.
I bet it won't be.
And I also bet you can directly impact whether or not it is.
Alas, I'm stuck reading only...
can't see the game.
this is the kind of game...
that the a's offense struggles. pitcher throws strikes and he's got a dominant pitch.
tonight is not the night to take pitches. they need to swing early and often.
Yep, if we watch pitches like normal
and get to a two strike count he'll just throw that slider out there.
Way to go Cupcake!
Let's start a new streak. We can still get 20 wins in August!
Strikeout central...
If the A's strike out 27 times and still outscore the Rays, will we have won?
Johnson
No ability to hang in there on an ab. Protect the plate loser! I think we all knew he was going to strike out looking.

Nap mojo didn't work last night...
I see. I went to "nap" before the game yesterday, but didn't get up until noon today. I have such an exciting life.
Typically...
he says, "a flyball... should be routine... Jack Cust under it."
Going, going, Gomes!
2-0 Devil Rays. The A's are somehow going to have to do something other than strike out if they want to change this score...
BOOOOO!!
Sadly true.
Did he ever really leave?
No K!
Woo!
Moral victory!
Score: D-Rays 2-0, but A's moral victories 1-0!!!
Brace yourself--
Ray Fosse is the rare guy who can make Vince Cotroneo sound good by comparison.
Ken calls him Raymond.
I just don't call him at all.
The Strikeout Streakout is Gone
Furmaniak's "shot" to the pitcher might as well be a home run. In fact, it was quite "Kendallian", but cause for celebration, nonetheless.
I am so glad I can't watch this game.
Not true!
If you were watching, we would be winning!
so i knew
the game was not on TV (sigh) and i'm in the yard doing some long neglected yardwork. i come in, turn on the radio and Fosse is doing play-by-play??? can it get any worse???
Can it get any worse?
That's the type of rhetorical question that just begs to be answered with bad luck.
What's the score now?
It can't be good.
104 to -3.
Fresno.
I was going to say in my living room.
I already pay enough
to watch baseball...lol.
But the reason we've K'd 8 times,
according to Fosse, is that Brian Runge is getting caught up in Kazmir-love and expanding the strike zone. Not that Kazmir is dealing, not that our lineup sucks. It's Runge.
Sigh. He's got such an objective way of
looking at everything.
They're getting Runged up?
Ow.....

slinking in an hour late...don't yell at me Pam
Nah. There's no way THIS can be your fault.
Although it is a Saturday...no kiddie excuses today!
well, sort of. the kiddie had a play date and I
had to wait until it was over to buy groceries.
I'm out of milk...
did you happen to pick some up for me?
actually, yes I did. I'm fixing burgers for
dinner. Do you want one?
I had spiced shrimp for dinner.
Thanks, though.
I've started a shelter
for battered prawns who have been the victim of someone's bad tempura. Not to help these prawns would just be shellfish.
Thanks for adding some mussel to the project
Scoot out...
Take your medicine Marco!
diagnosed with vertigo
but didn't take his meds.
I hate that.
The doctor gives you medication to get well. Take it.
That reminds me, I just booked
an appointment for you tomorrow with Dr. Kevorkian.
Still an improvement over
Davis. If you booked it with Davis he would know that you really are out to harm him.
vertigo
Isn't taking his medication.
It went like this:
Geren: "Why didn't you cover second?"
Scutaro: "I had vertigo."
Geren: "What? It was, like, 25 feet!"
Double ow....

"Raymond"
has used that 510/707 joke twice now. Does he think he has a new audience every night?
yes fosse
the only reason id go to a friday night game is to see robert buan. of course.
by jackcustismyhero32 on Aug 25, 2007 5:10 PM PDT reply actions
Well, he does get awfully excited
when giving away the GM cars.
by FreeSeatUpgrade on Aug 25, 2007 5:16 PM PDT up reply actions
"BJ cam"
The FCC allows that?
Usually on PPV.
Watching Robert Buan give away a car
might actually be more interesting than this particular game.
No way.
I have Friday season tickets at the A's, and that whole sponsorship should be scrubbed, period. (Unless I win)
So what happened to Scutaro?
Still have the vertigo? Looks like Hannahan came in and Furmaniak moved to SS.
What?!?! This is a barn burner.
I can't believe I'm still awake.
A's Pick off Young!
Fake to third, throw to first! That play never works!
On the FOX telecast today,
they were talking about how the Dodgers were seriously considering letting go of some of their best prospects (probably including LaRoche) to get Blanton, but how they were partly scared off by Blanton slumping in late July.
Bummer, because the Dodgers really have some prospects we could use. I'm ambivalent about trading Blanton, but if the right deal's there to add young hitting talent I think the A's have to go for it. LAD would be a great trading partner.
I wish that Atlanta
would trade us some young hitting talent. Now that they have dropped Wickman..Embree would be a good fit there.
Curious...
It seems you know more about that trade offer than Billy Beane did when you asked him about it. Do you have his e-mail, so you can let him know?
Blanton out after 5
Andrew Brown in. Blanton had 102 pitches, so that makes sense.
"Homer" hits catwalk and results in triple!
Gomes nails the catwalk, and nobody knew where it was. Run scores. 5-0, Rays.
Of course, it's a **** radio game.
I wish we saw that on TV. Jennifer? Still watching EI?
This isn't fun.
Teams aren't supposed to score a lot of runs against our pitching staff! Outrageous!
Ah, yes...
..back to no runs. The only half interesting thing to look forward to is the callup in September from Sacto. Understand they are in a pennant race, so it could take a week, or so. Big question is 'Who is left to call up?' Other than that... BORING!
Who's left in Sacramento?
I feel like this team has been "up from Sacramento" all year.
New Career High for Kazmir
12 K's for the man. Maybe I shouldn't have said our "soft-hitting club will be going up against the frequently strong-throwing Scott Kazmir..."
Swisher! Oy.
Short hops the ball of his chest, and gets an error. Oh yeah, run scores as well. 7-0 Rays.
11 k's, 0 bb's, 73 pitches only?
C'mon Kazmir burns through pitches, he shouldn't be in the game by now.
Et two, Swisher?
Swisher botches back to back plays. Curt Young comes out to talk with Casilla, and he should be heading straight to center field instead.
Polanco had his error taken away...
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/s...
"The official scorer who charged Detroit's Placido Polanco with an error in the first inning of the Tigers' 9-6, 11-inning victory over the Yankees has changed the call."
Piazza, lead off double
Doubles the A's hit count, and proves that singles are for lowly squads!
DJ Plunked at 94 MPH
Larry Davis out to wield the black staff of doom.
Shutout over! Furmaniak Doubles!
9-1 Tampa Bay, and a near home run!
9-2... comeback mounting.
Johnson scores on sacrifice fly. 7 more to go, A's!
Bases loaded... nobody out.
9-2 Rays and Tampa Bay looking to add on.
2 runs in, now 11-2
Might as well make it 12-2 for perfect series symmetry?
14 runs, 20 hits... 0 other people here?
Are we fairweather fans?
boy howdy, does not get any better
than this....
Out of contention
Late summer
Being trounced by D'rays
Dark, somber tropicana field
And...its seems just like Sunday on a Saturday afternoon here.
Home run A's!
14-3... we got our field goal! Jack Hannahan!
did anyone read the recent A's Mailbag
with the question about "will Jack Hannahan get my fan letter, I mean... the letter from the kids I babysit for?"
I'm ready to write one of my own
Swisher Singles Safely
That's a rally in my book. Nobody out. The tying run is in the dugout!
not really
On the TV replay the ball was caught. The left fielder got screwed out of a great catch.
by robofavant56 on Aug 25, 2007 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions
Unfortunately,
the tying runner is in Sacramento's dugout.
The bright side is...
...I'm not watching this clunker - no time wasted. Now when, and if, mgmt lets the young players play, I'll watch again. Give Swisher, Ellis and Johnson the rest of the season off (and trade DJ in winter). Let the rest of them play. Who cares?
Ballgame - 14 to 3 is your final.
Saturday evening away? Not so good. A's are 0-8.
