Open Thread: Game 125 - A's vs. Royals
<sigh> And we were having so much fun this week too. The 2007 Athletics: If They Were Just A Little Bit Better.
Lenny DiNardo will try to end the homestand on a positive note today, hooking up with the Royals' Kyle Davies for today's pitching matchup, as the A's try to avoid the sweep.
Yes, the Royals. <sigh again>
Because one crappy offense is just not enough for me, I'm heading out to Dodger Stadium for their game today. All complaints can be directed to Chavez Ravine.
C'mon Oakland, let's have one good game this weekend!
Maybe the lineup fairy will make an appearance in the thread.
LET'S GO OAK-LAND!

I like getting Murphy and Zuke a day off ...
... but I'd really like to see Swisher getting some rest as well.
Hey ladies!
On Marty Lurie's pregame radio show, Jack Cust was interviewed on their running Sunday segment, "Three Guys at the Ballpark." Cust was asked: "If you had to set your sister up with a guy on the A's, who would it be?"
The answer: "Travis Buck, because he's got a good head on his shoulders, knows where he's going in life, and is a really nice guy."

[triple swoon]
Nice, smart, focused, and very good looking.
Notice how he left that last one off his list.
{double swoon, thinking about triple swoo--}
OW!!! <grabs hammy>
until last night, I thought that was ...
... what it would take for Cust to hit a three-bagger.
want to meet
this really nice, knows-where-he-is-going, good-head-on-his-shoulder guy?
Meet A's outfielder Travis Buck after the game on Wednesday, August 29 at the Sunshine Saloon, 1807k Santa Rita Road in Pleasanton
jairo?
The A's did not announce another roster move after the game, but Santiago Casilla left the clubhouse carrying his equipment bag. Casilla has allowed 14 runs in his last 16» innings, spanning 15 outings.
What happened?

I like giving Murphy the day off
Especially right after the talk with Scutaro explaining that Hannahan and Murphy are the starters and he's the back-up again.
We all understand the reasoning for that, and I think Scoot does too, but it still sucks for him. Giving him a start today is a nice way to soften the blow and let him know he's still important to the team as the regular backup.
Not a big deal, but given how the front office has bungled communication with players so much this year, it's nice to see one done right.
9th inning Tex @ Minn
Twins up 1-0 and Joe Nathan is in now. Santana's line:

Uh oh.
Gathright on first.
Lenny "fielding" is always an adventure.
They give Donnie Murphy a day off
but can't give Gaudin a day off. How come?

yet another missed marketing opportunity
Cotroneo just mentioned the upcoming "A's Retro Alarm Clock" giveaway -- they really should have made it the "A's Official Rich Harden Disabled Retroactive to [time here] Alarm Clock."
To hear Cotroneo, you'd have thought
that ball Ellis hit was not a routine fly ball out. Which it was.
I was just about to say:
I looked away for a minute and heard the announcement. I thought it was at least a double with the way he called it.
I'm stuck with RSTN.
And a virus on my laptop, I think. :\
Ew.
Lach is basically antagonistically asking little kids whether they're rooting for the A's or not, giving them baseballs and telling them not to fight with their siblings. Oh, and giving Bobby Crosby a hard time about his fractured hand.
Marco!
Awesome! Player to be named later comes through AGAIN!

I love Lenny DiNardo.
If it weren't for The Mosquito,
Lenny'd be working on a perfecto.
Lenny oughta get his friends to "off" Gathright. (All people named Lenny DiNardo have mafia connections, right?)
Brenly might do it for him
Didn't he say something about breaking up a no-no with a bunt being horseshit?
That was a late-inning bunt attempt
And my personal opinion (not that anybody REALLY would care) is that these traditional, unwritten baseball rules are complete BS.
I'm with you on that
You think Brenly was telling his pitchers to challenge Mac and Sosa in '98? I doubt it.
Agree--btw the guy who bunted
for an 8th inning hit was...Rob Bowen. And if you want a no-hitter, then you should be prepared to field a bunt. That rule is unwritten because it's hooey!
Ewww
If that puts him on the DL, I hope they just say that he has a "strained back" or something. No detail, please.
Or a typo of bulging disc in his back?
Wow, every time I tune back in, Cust is on first
with a walk. I thought gameday had gotten stuck.

Damn straight.
um
is Lenny really this good? Sometimes he gets rolling and throws numbers like an ace would
I think he's a good #4
I think he should switch places with Gaudin next year. Haren, Loaiza, Blanton, Dinardo, Gaudin.

DAN JOHNSON!
poor Melhuse
they just said he could very likely have given his new Texas teammates the latest Oakland signs, whereas Kendall, not that it would matter much now that he is in the NL with the Cubs, would not even consider doing such a thing

Anyone got a camcorder?
Screw Gathright, I'm gonna make a video of me jumping over 3 Hot Wheels,a teddy bear, and a fully cooked rutabaga.
tough day for fly balls
No clouds makes it hard to judge. Of course, it didn't help that Davanon turned the wrong way two or three times.
Should've had that single
His glove went all turtle-head on that ball
Yes! And a Gold Glove!
Don't be cheap, A's!

Or is this the first one?
Lenny at 71 pitches through 7.
He's workin' it today.
Hot stuff.
and somehow charge him with an error.
lucky break there
Ellis came off the bag
let's go Marco!
by SwisherThresher on Aug 19, 2007 3:13 PM PDT reply actions
Hannahan looks like a GREAT fit for the A's
He sees a lot of pitches, and that was his 3rd GIDP already.
Unbelievably, Joey Gathright
is now batting .476 (30/63) on the road this year. That's amazing.
A very long time ago
I had a computer game called Pursue the Pennant. THis was in the late '80's or early '90's. The Yankees had a 3b who had like 100 AB's or something and hit over .500 against lefties. I think you see where I'm going with this.
Lenny, what a STUD.
Lenny! Lenny! Pitch the 9th!
He's awesome today!

i like gathright
he seems like a fun player to have on the team!
during batting practice yesterday, gathright went after a fly ball and the fly ball bounced out of his glove and hit another guy on the back of his head. gathright fell on the grass laughing! haha.

guess it's good to have someone ready just in
case. but he's earned the opportunity to go for it
Let's go Lenny!
Booooooo, that's not Lenny!
Shut them down and put a bow on this one
and give him the game ball.
They should have left Lenny in
until he got in any trouble. Then Street.
by A'sfansince1970 on Aug 19, 2007 3:35 PM PDT reply actions
he was at 85 pitches and on fire
did they really have to use Street in this situation?
I mean, really now?
by SwisherThresher on Aug 19, 2007 3:35 PM PDT reply actions
What?? Gameday shows DiNardo. and Gruds with a
single! Is it Huston? Was there a hit?
Street is in
Single to shallow right for Grudz.
I don't get it. It's not a save situation. it's
not a setup for a save situation. and the guy had his best game ever going. I can't imagine he was given the option and said no. I like Huston, but this is a let down for me. It's so rare to have a guy be this strong for 8 innings.
this would be a much more exciting 9th
if lenny was out there trying to get the CG.
i wonder why he's not back out there?
they said his arm was tired
I agree that this final frame would have been far more exciting if Lenny was looking to close it out for the complete game
aw well
