Rickey, I'm coming for you, 2009
I'm feeling nostalgic these days....
I don't post many blogs here but the A's are like most of my loves- they always let me down eventually. Do you think the coming of Kirk Gibson when I was 16 and my lifelong frustration with women have anything in common? 1981 trained me in disappointment. God, I loved that team. Was there ever such a unique team, one that likely would have won the Series if not for the arm-wrecking pause in midseason? It was the strike that broke Langford and McCatty and gave Norris time to find bad coke. Armas, Murphy, and Henderson were the best offensive and defensive outfield in baseball. And don't even get me started about BillyBall, A's Baseball, BillyBall, You Blew That Ball- Woo, it's back in the dugout... anyone have a recording of that ol' ditty?
Anyhow, I'm feeling particularly let down these days as people quickly forget or maybe never knew that, for a decade, Rickey Henderson was unquestionably the single most exciting man in baseball. At a time when hardhat guys like Yount and Murphy and Ripken and Brett got all the ink, Rickey was the most exciting and unpredictable thing in baseball. Every at bat of every game, even when he was six spots away in the order, was performed with Rickey in mind. You just never knew what he'd do.
I desperately want to see Rickey in a coaches' box in Oakland. If he's good enough for the Mets, he's more than good enough for us. He's our boy. Bring him home.
I wrote this little ballad on the occasion of 756. Barry, like Rickey, is a character of legend. We who've watched them, even though we know we'll never be loved like we deserve, have been blessed.
BTW, I worked with Nico in Medford in the summer of 1992. I remember "Soft Shoulder".
---------------------------
Rickey, I'm coming to Cooperstown, day you get in,
it's my next destiny and the best reason to
push on a few more years, Odysseus would
be as dead and forgotten as any anonymous soldier
were it not for Homer, and no, you're
ten-team wanderings looking for one last gasp
don't add up to years of sea-wracked
torture and goddess sightings you couldn't
separate from your own lonely madness,
no, Rickey, you were just a man showing up
every day for work, who knew the rules well enough
to drive your co-workers crazy, knew
where to slide in those cracks, head-first,
an East Bay youth who learned that not
all thievery's a crime,
who knew that life's just one theater after
another, and you kept playing the star, though
we all turned away when the game passed us by
and life called us away to less meaningful quests,
I'm not Homer, either, just a Hayward boy with
an Oakland A's program in my hands, an education
soiled by the neo-con death parade, and those
milestone numbers counting up in orange on
the left-field Coliseum scoreboard, 97, 100, 119, 130,
and the game needed you, Rickey, needs
you now more than ever, Billy Martin's dirt-kicking
shoes can't get him back out of that last six feet,
the epic you played out among
decrepit East Bay industrial parks, under
the Old Milwaukee-soaked watch of blue-collar men
who didn't want to get out of the
East Bay until it was far too late to leave safely,
you deserved Homer and Shakespeare,
but writers who play the fame game don't
buy Colossal Dogs off of Hegenberger Road,
so you'll just get me, I'll see you in
Cooperstown 2009, your date with fame,
look for the lunatic bard who never outgrew
his green and gold youth and cheap BART tickets
to the Coliseum station.

OK, mvk,
now you have to tell me who you are...
by Nico on Aug 18, 2007 5:37 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
You probably don't remember...
...my real name is Michael Van Kleeck, and I was the media guy for Medford for the first part of summer '92. Until my money ran out and I had to go find a real job. I thought the $500/month was after rent. I didn't realize I had to live on that when I signed up.
Not sure if I made much of an impression then, but I learned a few things, certainly. Despite my lifelong A's love affair, I didn't know about AN until I googled Nico Pemantle about a year ago. Now I live in Portland (saw Dallas and DaVanon on Thursday, as well as Barton) and my wife is tired of hearing about the A's.
Hi Nico.

Hi Mike!
From your user name, I assumed you were Michael Vick and I had a few choice words for you. But now that I know you're Michael Van Kleeck, I have even MORE choice words for you! Kidding. Glad you found AN--it's a cool place.

Oh.. I know...
I've been lurking for a while. A long, long while.
But you can still let me have it.

I'd love to see...
Rickey playing LF on the last day of the season... let him go out as an A. Yeah, it's a bit of a travesty, but if Buck O'Neill could hit in a minor league all-star game, why can't we play someone half that age in left in a meaningless game?
Then, next year, he can coach first. I think he'd be a great fit in the clubhouse, and the team needs someone who's ego isn't in the shadow of Mr. Beane's, yet at the same time, doesn't pose a threat to team harmony, either.

Guys like Rickey made it easy to be an A's fan
as a kid.
Above all old Green and Gold warriors, I think the A's need him and he needs the A's more now than ever.
Living in the Moneyball era, we tend to forget what it was like to live with guys like Rickey who played with fire and passion. We have long been missing a couple key ingredients from a run at dominance. The biggest one of these ingredients is electricity. Don't think that a touch of The Man of Steal wouldn't bring a charge back into the Oakland clubhouse to thirsty players like Swish and Buck.
Bring in those old A's. Show the new guys how to win. Let the Mets have Dykstra or Strawberry.
Bring Rickey home.

With Ricky as a coach
with the Mets, we may have to trade for him, a la Chuck Tanner for Manny Sanguillen.
Sudden thought: Is Ozzie Guillen a saint, and thus
"Sanguillen"????
At first glance, I thought this diary was too "treacle-ly". But "upon further rear-view" I sea the author has a history that justifies the fawning nature of the diary.
A little. Somewhat. IMHO.

I agree, bring him back!
Rickey will almost surely wear an A's hat in the HOF and is quite simply one of the most underrated players of all time. He played Billy Beane style baseball while Billy Beane was still a hot prospect. I was a terrible player in Junior High baseball until I started imitating his crouch and shrinking the strike zone. Also, just watching how Rickey was so patient at the plate taught me to learn to make the pitcher throw to me and it worked as I was an all-star by the end of the year. I even had a pair of white Mizuno cleats. I really hope that he comes back for one last game and we retire old number 24 (or should it be 35 or even 22).

Who underrates Rickey?
He's going to be a nearly unanimous HOF pick and is universally considered the best leadoff hitter of all time ...
I mean, he's not one of the 10 best players ever ... but I think most would agree he's in or near that next group ...

Amen... bring ricky home. Ah I miss those game opening home runs, the walks that turned into triples, the minature strike zone as he crouched ready to rip the ball. I miss rickey, i really do, hell I was him for halloween 2 years in a row. I'm still angry that I can't purchase a custom A's jersey with 24 and Henderson on the back. I too will be there when ricky is in the hall, a day to remember

some good news...
If I can buy a custom A's jersey that says "Beane 27" on it, you can get a "Henderson 24." It just might be a couple of hundred bucks, that's all...

hmmmm.. well i tried it a couple of years ago, and it wouldnt let me, i would put in henderson and the number 24, and the website would come back telling me about current or retired players nonsense, i should check this out again.

Many places don't follow the rules ...
but the rule is that you can't get a current player on a team he is not on -- no Huddy/Miggie/Byrnes/etc A's jersey or retired players on the team that they retired from -- you could get a McGwire A's jersey, but not a McGwire Cards jersey, for example.
A couple of years ago (or three, rather), he was playing for the Dodgers. And since he has never officially retired, that might complicate matters as well.

...
thanks devo, thats what I thought. I was wondering how coaches play into this whole thing as well. I guess I will be relegated to buying an authentic, and going to a team shop and having them make me the lettering to put on the jersey, kinda like how I make my halloween costumes.

If you shop around a bit ...
I'd bet you could find a place online that would do it ... save yourself a few bucks.
by devo on Aug 20, 2007 10:17 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Find yourself a good custom shop
the same kind of shops that do letters for fraternity sweaters. Most of those places can take a blank jersey and turn it into a pro level jersey.
Here in San Jose, I'm lucky enough to live near a sport apparel place that does work for the San Jose Sharks and the Niners. I'm sure there is a place near you that can get that Rickey jersey done.

Unless you're a huge Ricky Peters fan,
you might consider spelling Rickey Henderson's first name correctly--especially if you're inspired enough by Rickey to model your user name around him!

...
uh oh.. its the grammar police. Yes I understand I made a mistake upon first creating my username. Thank you for pointing it out though. Now unless I can change my name after I make it, I don't I should bother increasing the list of usernames just because I don't know how to spell. But you can think of it as a Ricky Peters fan name, if it makes you happy.

It's a spelling issue, not a grammar issue.
Or do you not like being corrected by me?

If you ask Blez really nicely ... or perhaps Nico
(I don't know if he has that much power) he can change it for you.

Strangely, I have the power to invade Guam,
yet not the power to change an AN user name. Just shows you how important AN is. Or Guam isn't.

1990, the A's swept the yankees
...in the season series. There was a late May afternoon game that provides one of my fondest Rickey memories. The score was 1-0 in favr of NY in the 7th or 8th inning. Rickey was on 2nd, he broke from 2nd, it looked like a stright steal. The batter hit a slow bouncer to SS and Rickey scored standing up!

rickys ego is bigger than Billys and Billy is not
going to let anyone but Billy be the big ego on Billys team because Billy is the greatest GM of all time so says Billy...so say we all

Since we are waxing nostalgic
It was a mid June afternoon, during a doubleheader, remember those, Vs. Texas in 1979. There were about 1400 in attendance, of which I was one. There was an outfielder with no name on his jersey, sporting a #35. he was not in the program.(it was just a scoresheet then) I wondered who it was, until Roy Steele said it was Rickey Henderson. He smacked a double in his first at bat, little did I know at that time the first ray of sunshine was shining on us during a very dismal season. (I still have the ticket stub!) Then in 1980 came Billy, Martin that is, hence my name. It was the most exciting two seasons I have ever seen. One could only imagine if it was Billy vs. Billy now. That would be a battle of Ego. Like him or not, if it was not for Billy Martin, and the 1980 squad, it would have been the Denver A's. We owe Rickey et al our gratitude.
