Someone tell me again why ...

Mark Kotsay is in the line-up?

Star-divide

His seasonal OPS is .575, his August batting average is .071, and his defense is overrated.

There is absolutely no reason this individual should be allowed to play right now. He is terrible, and every time he comes to the plate, he hurts the team.

On the off-chance he does throw out a runner trying to advance once every ten games, that is still not worth the price the team pays for having him in the line-up.

Come on, Geren -- bench this guy and stick him where he belongs.

Come on, Beane -- time to send this guy packing ANYWHERE.

Addition by subtraction, if nothing else.

who else plays CF

while Swisher is banged up?

I will know the end is near when we see Jack Cust in CF.

Signatures? We don't need no stinking signatures.

If Cust plays it with a bat

we might have a chance!

He is under contract for 2008 and there is little

to play for in 2007.  Why cut the guy and "eat" the salary when you can evaluate him during ST next year?

He does need some bench time but it would be stupid to dump him when we don't even have any CF'ers on our team anyway.

unfortunately,

we have no other option at the moment. Kotsay, under normal circumstances, would at least have been relegated to platoon duty to get his act together. Swisher should not be considered a CF, esp. with his sore hammy. we don't even have anyone in AAA to fill out the spot, as Danny Putnam is playing center there. he hasn't shown he's ready for the jump yet.

i think we'll ride out Kotsay's bad bat through the season, hoping he puts it together. if he doesn't seriously rebound between now and the end of september, we've got to cut ties with him before '08 because he's the type who will make a stink about being a role player.

if we were really trying to get rid of him, the best time might be after the free agent shuffle of center fielders, making a dump trade with someone who lost out. but Beane won't do that anyway...

i really don't want to see him opening day '08, because that likely means at least half a season of Kendall-esque futility, and probably another season out of contention.

8 million reasons why he is playing

i actually don't have a hate on for kotsay like others might. i think he plays a great CF and his offense isn't this bad.

i am pissed he waited so long before deciding to have his back surgery and thus have such a shitty '07.

On days like these I really miss "oaktoon".

Agree as well, give him the offseason to r

restrengthen the back, and see what we have at the beginning of next season, while also finding someone who is young and can spell him, and/or replace him if he comes back and struggles with the bat.

by theblackpearl on Aug 15, 2007 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions

and as far as the throwing guys out once every

10 games, why do you think they don't try it the other 9????

by theblackpearl on Aug 15, 2007 9:33 AM PDT up reply actions

The A's have already done the latter,

getting Denorfia, who by all accounts is a solid 4th OFer who could overachieve himself into being a worthy starter.

You can't break something

if it's not solid to begin with. Broken bones, you hear about; broken ligaments not so much. If Denorfia is going to fit in with the A's he needs to be solid enough to break a bone. Just don't ask Larry Davis for a cast or a splint because those weren't popular in 1977.

I'm not pissed about the back surgery

because it's not like driving on bald tires, waiting for the inevitable blow-out.  There is no certainty, or high-percentage of "cures" with surgery.  In fact, it often is less likely that you will get relief with surgery compared to other methods.

Obviously, even with the back surgery, he isn't healthy.  This is why he's batting .211 or whatever.  He still hurts!

And, he has 8 million reasons to take the "boiled frog approach"  where it's never quite bad enough to say you're hurt again and should be on the DL, and maybe I can squeeze out a good day and get the avg back up.  Look at him at the plate.  He looks much more tenative than his old self, while batting.

It all looked good in early June!  But, he's hurt, and not telling. IMO.

who's gonna take him...

right now, I'd trade Bobby Crosby and Mark Kotsay to anybody for anything, and I'd consider paying half their salaries just to make sure the door didn't hit them on the ass on the way out.
