final 13 established
barring a miracle, we have our 13 potential playoff teams. every single division in baseball has solidified into a 2-team race, with no one in either league pulling away from the pack enough to guarantee a wildcard WITHOUT a divisional win.
in the al, the race between the m's and yanks is the only story with any suspense or mystery to it. the angels and bosox are obviously wining their divsions, and there's no way an al central team grabs the wildcard.
in both leagues, the central is a steaming, funky garbage dump, with the worst teams playing the best baseball.
the nl race is a bit more interesting, with the nl west number 2 team fighting for space with 3 excellent nl east teams.
perhaps the most consistent theme is the excellence of offenses in the east in both leagues.
ichiro, eric byrnes, the yankees, a crumbling gagne - there could be worse entertainment for a west coast baseball fan.

Most of this is wrong

False, the AL central is going to be a very interesting race, as will the AL East.
the angels and bosox are obviously wining their divsions,
False, the Yanks are 4 games back and have the best Pythag in baseball (almost a full 2 wins over the sox) with 6 games against them later this year still.
and there's no way an al central team grabs the wildcard.
The Tigers/Indians are only 2 games behind Mariners/Yankees and while I don't think the chances are great no way is a pretty stupid statement. BP has the wild card chances of the two combined at about 10% which is far off from "no way"
in both leagues, the central is a steaming, funky garbage dump, with the worst teams playing the best baseball.
False, the reds, pirates, cardinals, astros and white sox still suck greatly.
perhaps the most consistent theme is the excellence of offenses in the east in both leagues.
Only the yanks and sox are in the top half of the AL East in RS, but it is plenty consistent Joe.

4 weeks will make all of this incredibly obvious
and the pythag didn't do much for the indians last year, did it?
much as i foresaw the hallady/bosox game as indicitave of the early demise of the jays, so is the 4-and-out for both central winners as obvious as the blue skies of arizona. in the meantime, check the stros, cards, chisox and royals in the past week.
The real wild card should be
the non-division winner with the best Pythag record....
oh, wait... no it shouldn't!

I say...
Padres, Brewers, Mets, and Diamondbacks...
Angels, Tigers, Red Sox and Mariners...
Don't go marking my words or anything, though....

mathematically
No one is really "out" until they're out. But if you are predicting, I would have to add a team to that list. Colorado is the team that I can't see making the playoffs, even though they are only 2.0 games out of the NL Wild Card.

yes their starting pitching is horrible
theriot, fontenot and other 2-tier guys have been slapping their starters all over the place.
phils and braves are the only 'extra' team when all 5 other divs only have 2 teams left in it. the last dark horse to possibly sneak in is the cards, the dodgers and rockies are totally done.
the nl will be decided based on how beat up the old guy pitchers on the pods and mets get.
Not that I think the Rockies will make it,
but if you're only 2 games out of a spot with just 6 weeks to go, you're in the race. Anyone can play 2 games better than anyone over 6 weeks.
