I never thought I'd miss Ken Macha...
but I miss Ken Macha.
Geren is a nice enough guy but I think we are all seeing how good of a manager that Macha was now that he's gone.
Geren has been dealt soem bad breaks this year but atleast when Macha made an odd call, I'd live with it because I trusted his baseball knowledge. When Geren makes an odd call, I throw somethign at my TV because I know that the only reason he got the job is because he is Billy Beane's buddy.
Sure Macha didn;t get along with the players (apparently Melhuse and Kotsay) but the guy won ball games and to me that's what matters.
I'll be the first to say Macha drove me nuts with some of this decisions, but at the end of the day all the guy did was win.

The irony:
Only someone who calls themselves "I miss Jason Giambi" would have the balls to write a nostalgic love letter about missing Ken Macha.
In the words of Eric the Clown, "You're livin' in the past, man! You're hung up on some clown from the sixties, man!"

Hmm.
I know that the only reason he got the job is because he is Billy Beane's buddy.
And how do you know this?
I'm not saying being close to Beane didn't help Geren get hired, but you do know he's an ex-MLB catcher and also managed in Sacramento before becoming a coach at the MLB level with the team, right? He's been with the organization for years.
To say that because Geren is Beane's friend is the ONLY reason he got the job is not very realistic.
I would've liked to see Washington manage here, but let's stop acting like Geren doesn't have any baseball knowledge.

The Manager plays a very minor role for the A's
You should take a look at the book "moneyball" as it pretty much clearly states in the Billy Beane system that "the manager" is a good soldier.
As far as winning, that's up to the players. The Oakland Managers are interchangeable, Macha's the same as Howe who's the same as Garen.

Please everyone
Don't give this troll the pleasure. Don't respond. He is not an A's fan, as his history indicates. Just look at any post in any game. Nothing but negativity. When the team is doing well, it's silence. When something goes wrong, guess who comes a knockin'? All he's looking to do is get everyone fired up for no reason, which is what is happening. Thank you.

I liked Macha more as time went on
I didn't like him to begin with, but I thought he got better and better with ML experience.
Geren is a rookie manager, and seems to be doing fine. If we let him get experience, I think we could have a much better manager on our hands.

The A's have sucked this year
but I still like Geren better than Macha.
Geren, at least until recently, was great with the pitching staff. He'd pull them right before they got into trouble, rather than right after they gave up the big hit. If a guy was struggling with a high PC, he'd go out there, take him out, and bring in a fresh arm. Macha would go out there, talk, let the guy face the batter, watch the 3 run go ahead homerun, then take him out.
He also had the balls to bat Kendall 9th instead of in the 1, 2 or 3 spot.
His lineups arn't the best, but they're not that bad. Its just that our team can't hit itself out of a wet paper bag half the time.

I miss(ed) Eric Chavez. And Frank Thomas.
and Mike Piazza. and Mark Kotsay. and Esteban Loaiza. and Bobby Crosby. and Justin Duchsherer. and Rich Harden. and Huston Street. and Milton Bradley. and Kiko Calero.
Sure, Macha had to deal with his share of injuries, but not the way Geren has to deal with them.

and Nick Swisher, and Travis Buck, and the list
goes on.

You're right!
And we shouldn't have traded Tejada for Chavez, and we shouldn't have traded Rich Harden to the Disabled List for Kiko Ducherlero and we should have kept Rickey Henderson and Terry Steinbach and McGuire.
Damn you Billy Bones and Lew Wolfenstein!
Which brings up another issue. If Terry Steinbach invests in Cisco Field will it be called Wolfe 'n Stein's Castle?
Inquiring mindholes want to know!

Forget Macha and Geren
Art Howe was where it was at. He had so much success in the early 2000's. and the team in 2003 that Macha managed was pretty much the same as the one from 2002 with Howe.

Keep him at bench coach another year
and the Rangers are practically guaranteed the World Series!

it's been all downhill since Corny McG
by monkeyball on Aug 14, 2007 5:41 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Even Corny McG
had a lifetime record under .500.
there was a time, long long ago, when the Athletics really really were horrible... umm... what was it called... oh yeah...
the forties fifties and sixties...
From Mack to Arnold Johnson to the early bumblings of Chicago Chuckie... the A's not only stunk, but were a total laughingstock too.
One "bad" season, which may yet be a .500 or better season, ain't sh!t.
