What about Bobby?

Apparently Bobby Kielty is ready to go - what to do now?

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/pla...

Star-divide

I know we all get frustrated when Kielty is left in the game against a righty and turns into ... well, Kendall.  But when a lefty is pitching, Bobby Kielty becomes an .890 OPS player (David Wright, Alfonso Soriano territory).  Can this offense afford to cast off that kind of production, especially when they are a lefty heavy lineup?

There's no problem at the moment - when Kielty is ready for the majors, send out Dee Brown.  But what happens when Buck comes back?  Do they go back to just one backup IF?  And who loses ABs to get Kielty into the lineup?  Things would be easier if Stewart or Buck could play CF or Kielty could play 1st.  Or maybe they just need to decide that a guy who can only play 1 out of 5 games is not worth keeping on the roster.

I think he's worth having around

at the expense of the extra backup infielder. The offense is very vulnerable to LHPs right now. I'd platoon him with Kotsay or DJ.

And he should be played by

Bill Murray in the movie about his life.

Bill Murray?

I was thinking more along the lines of Carrot Top, but he'd have to bulk up a little!

No way.

Bill Murray in an afro is not a good thing.

I say it's a two step process
1) Move Dee Brown down to AAA when Kielty is added to the roster
2) When Buck (or Piazza) comes back, DFA Kielty, a la Milton, and trade him. He is not part of the A's future.

Actually three steps

Kielty is on the 60 day DL.  Therefore, when he is activated someone else must be removed from the 40 man roster.  So it might be:

  1. Drop X from 40 Man Roster,
  1. Send Brown to Sacramento, activate Kielty,
  1. Bring back Buck, DFA Kielty, trade him for a happy meal.

by Hang Man on Jul 5, 2007 11:38 AM PDT reply actions

Not quite
  1. The A's will simply move Duchscherer to the 60-day DL, freeing up a roster spot.
  1. Yes.
  1. No. The A's aren't likely to DFA Kielty. I could see them trading him to a team needing some outfield depth, but this isn't a Milton Bradley-type situation where Kielty will sulk as the 4th/5th outfielder. It's much more likely that Donnie Murphy will be sent back to Sacto if/when there's a roster crunch (unless Chavez's back stiffness is more serious that it appears).

Swisher

Things would be easier if Stewart or Buck could play CF or Kielty could play 1st.

Doesn't Swisher solve both of these problems? If you want Kielty in the lineup in place of the 1B, juggle the outfield and put Swisher at 1B.  Same thing for CF. I know Swisher isn't the greatest defender in CF, but he's not terrible.

By the way, exactly how bad is it to put Stewart or Buck in CF? Does anyone know?

I could see Buck in center.

It's only one game, not a week or more.

I think it's time to cut bait and run on Kielty.

What can this guy bring to the table that we aren't getting from the players we already have? At least Brown can play the OF, I say DFA Kielty when he's ready. It's not like he has any value.

Buck is the real deal but I wonder

if he can handle playing on a daily basis this year??  He seems to be cursed with injuries right now and I would be thrilled to have him in the lineup 3 nights a week.

Buck and Cust are both LH hitters who can hit LH pitching.   That is one reason I love them both when looking towards the future.

Dee Brown showed some speed ...

... in RF and a bit-o-pop with the bat in the lates yesterday.  I was pleasantly surprised, but I still remember Milton.

Track record

Several times in the past when Kielty has been in a position to get some playing time he has promplty been injured. There is absolutely no reason to believe that this pattern will change. I think two seasons ago he positioned himself for an opportunity to start 10 games in a row, and injured himself in batting practice, before the first game.

DFA him

His numbers don't support him taking a roster spot. We should trade him for a can of copenhagen for Geren. That is about all he is worth.

Trade him to the Cubs for Ted Lilly!

Maybe that would be workable??

Rename Fremont, CA, to Philadelphia, CA. "Philadelphia Athletics" will sound great.

Agreed

I disliked that trade. I know Lilly was destined to be costly, but they could have signed him to a 3 year deal for like 21 million. He is better than ELO
