Open Thread: Game 84 - A's vs. Blue Jays
<yawn>
Wow, what a terrible nightmare! I dreamt that I went away for two weeks, and the A’s had a tough time winning games.
Oh wait. That may actually have happened. But old news now; let's get back to the business of winning games!
Happy Fourth Of July!!!!
Didya miss me?!
You should all be out doing things like going to the beach (or the lake, for the NRAFs), playing golf, setting off fireworks, or cheering on the A’s in person. I expect to see a very empty game thread. Just me...talking to myself. Fun!
But just in case you happen to favor an air-conditioned room with the A’s game to all other holiday activities, today’s rubber game features Joe Kennedy against Dustin McGowan. Kennedy has been better than his record indicates; the A’s haven’t scored a lot of runs for him. Hopefully he and the A’s offense will show up with the fireworks today.

air conditioning?
don't need it today. 53 degrees and rain. too typical of a 4th here. well, i should be joining the paltry thread maybe after the dreary parade and a soggy brautworst from one of the booths downtown.
Three great Americans have their birthday today
George Steinbrenner, Al Davis, and me.
Well, OK, maybe two, no, one, all right nobody.
don't forget Geraldo Rivera!
Welcome back, BBG. Let's get a "W" today.
I have a strange feeling that Crosby will have a good game today. 8th hole should motivate him.

I had a nightmare that no TV

temporarily most likely... until SF takes over.
I have mlb.tv ready to go whenever they drop out my EI signal. Heck it's the A's telecast on mlb.tv for once.

That kid...
next to Wolff from the footage from last night. He was the one in the green sweatshirt without the hat. He sat in front of me last night and couldn't sit still for two seconds. He was bouncing around and everything. I almost threw my camera at him. Why he couldn't take a cue from his younger sister who was actually sitting there quietly watching the game??
by athleticscatcher on Jul 4, 2007 1:05 PM PDT reply actions
No clue. He may end up deserving to bat
in the 2-hole but not right now.

I'm here. Not even hot in Texas.
It's all of 81 degrees and yes, more rain. I think there's a 10 day record of straight measureable rain that is in jeopardy. Probably won't go to the Rangers game. Not worth the expense if it gets rained out. But Jered Weaver is pitching and I'd love to see him lose.
Hi there. Aren't Rangers tix really expensive?
The rain in the MW has been great except for having to mow my lawn two times a week.

Depends. If you have a coupon they can be as low
as $3 for nosebleed seats. I was thinking about getting those and just go for the atmosphere, and Angels loss, and the fireworks. Parking is $8-10 and food is ridiculous. I'm going to the A's series in Aug and got tix for $10 each. I usually pay around $15-20 when the A's come to town so I can sit next to the A's bullpen.
Oh lord, Curt Young is already summoned??
Come on JoKe. No Komine for me please.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Jul 4, 2007 1:18 PM PDT reply actions
Its over already...
wow, Happy July 4th!
He needs to throw something they can hit and hope
the defense behind him can get the out. Cuz he's not going to be striking anyone out.
Geren needs to get him out now.
by larrysgurl on Jul 4, 2007 1:20 PM PDT reply actions
Well Joe has certainly overachieved this year
but that doesn't make it any easier being down 3-0 TODAY.

4-0 Canadians...
This is Idependance Day! What are these damn Canadians thinking!
And what the hell is President Kennedy doing out there?
he's about 2 batters too late.
by larrysgurl on Jul 4, 2007 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions
This seems to be an "I give" scenario for the A's
Komine is not a good pitcher but you certainly can't blame Geren for pulling him. Macha wouldn't have done so this early.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Jul 4, 2007 1:24 PM PDT reply actions
What a difference from last night.
Blanton was so smooth and efficient. This is torture watching Kennedy throw the ball all over the place. Good, Geren is coming out to get him. He stole his paycheck today.
by BMWK100 on Jul 4, 2007 1:25 PM PDT reply actions
I have a thought.
Why not let Blanton come back on 3 days rest, so we get Gaudin, Haren, and Blanton in a row, and maybe get Harden back in there soon. It would give us a fighting chance to get in rhythm of wins in a row, momentum shift, whatever.
Zonis, could you please stop with the
relentless negativity and predictcions of failure? The game speaks for itself.
anyone listening to the radio?
KenKo speculated that JoKe might have been on a short leash anyway, due to his either not feeling well or not looking good in his warmup bullpen session.
I heard that. You'd think if he was this bad,
Young would have known it while he was warming up. Maybe he got Haren's bug? Gee, even when Danny's sick he still is a better pitcher than most.
well, they could have known and ...
... thought either (a) it was too late to pull him, (b) he might get better, and/or (c) they might as well try to squeeze 3-4 innings out of him anyway, since the long-relief/sub-start options pretty much suck.
Okay guys. Let's get it started here.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Jul 4, 2007 1:26 PM PDT reply actions
No complaints so far. 2 pitches and out of the
inning. Sure hope we have a shitload of offense today.
Oh yeah. Great job thus far.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Jul 4, 2007 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions
But it could make him accpt an
assignment to the bullpen with little complaint.
He'd have been okay today, at "one and done" type of assignment.

"No. It's Oakland."
when Harden and Loiaza are back in the
rotation, will Kennedy go back to the bullpen?
by larrysgurl on Jul 4, 2007 1:29 PM PDT reply actions
I never want to see Kennedy on the hill again
Doesn't he realize that if he wants to give up runs like Haren, he has to have a large lead?
I am much more comfortable to with Komine.
If he's throwing strikes, why wait until you are
0-2????

What we're hoping of a repeat for is
McGowan's start, when Zito gave up 4 in the first inning and the A's won 7-4. If Komine can stall the Jays at 4 for a while, we can come back.

I think he figured it would
be a strike, because the ump missed that last call. Not that he's a great hitter who otherwise would have laid off that pitch and then hit the next one out of the yard or anything ...

when the A's have day games!?
Bummer, I seem to have missed all the good stuff :P
It's YOUR fault :-)
Now they will score!
We needed your optimism. Now look what happened.
I want a personally delivered apology to Joe Kennedy within the hour.
From who--the person who
manufactured his left arm? Shoddy work.
It's funny...
I just added him to my "get points for when they suck" fantasy team last night, but it was after midnight so he's not added to the team until tomorrow. I figured if he's going to not be so good anymore I might as well get something out of it.
He wasn't supposed to suck today :(
Trade me, willl you?
Well, I'll just have to refuse to retire any Giants, preventing your fans from watching the game.
Maybe doing us a favor?
Komine is what he is.

just took a quick peek
at the box score before running off to a friend's barbecue.
Why is Komine in? Did he start? Did Kennedy get hurt? Did Kennedy totally suck and get pulled?
Yes Joe did start, don't think he got hurt, but h
he is on the A's, and yes he totally sucked and was pulled in the 1st inning.
by theblackpearl on Jul 4, 2007 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions
Kennedy walked 4 and gave up 4 runs on 2 hits
without finishing the 1st inning.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Jul 4, 2007 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions
Let's go A's!!
I mean, yeah, we're down by 6... but at least it's early! If we get a run or two each inning (and stop giving some up) we can definitely win this game.
Is that good for optimism? :)
I'm behind ya 100% and still hopeful.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Jul 4, 2007 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions
No thanks. The A's are playing!!
by ohtobe21likehuston on Jul 4, 2007 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions
I think this is an example of
getting the least out of a player. Kennedy has been terrific against lefties (.129 BAA, .0.90 WHIP), but horrific against righties (.310 BAA, 1.70 WHIP). Teams just stack the lineup with righties against Kennedy when he starts, so he is always pitching at his worst.
The A's really could have used Kennedy in the bullpen and anyone else (Komine, Braden, whoever) would have been just as likely to pitch about as well as a starter. The fact that Kennedy succeeded for no apparent reason for 6 weeks doesn't change the reality that he is very ill suited to starting and very well suited to the pen.
Hopefully Komine will pitch well...
WOOO!!
Let's go Stewart! Get a hit!
Stew is living right. Nice hustle.

You'd think, since the Blue Jays are based in Canada, that they'd let us win today since it's the 4th of July. That's not very nice of them to keep shutting us out like this.

Your team is getting squashed time to put in the back ups and rest players. Take out swish and put in brown. Take out chavez and put in murphy. Give your tired players a rest

Ken Rosenthal says...
A's designated hitter Jack Cust is hot again, jeopardizing the future of Mike Piazza, a potential Hall of Famer, in Oakland.
If Piazza's shoulder doesn't recover enough by the All-Star break for him to throw and return part-time to catcher, the A's might need to trade him to a team in need of a DH
That won't be so easy, however. The Mariners, Twins and Angels all need better production out of their DH spot, but the A's would not want to move Piazza to a club that it's competing with for a postseason berth.
One thing is clear: Cust will play, perhaps getting more time in the outfield if Piazza remains in the picture. A left-right platoon with Piazza might be unnecessary; Cust's on-base/slugging percentage against left-handers (1.014) is higher than it is against right-handers (.999).
Cust batted .310 with eight homers in his first 13 games, then .153 with no homers in his next 21. A fluke? Not when he recovered to bat .390 with six homers in his last 15 games.
Uncomfortable as the situation might be, Cust says Piazza has been extremely supportive; they also were teammates last season with the Padres.
"You might think with the career that he has had, he might (act) a certain way," Cust says. "But he's as far from that as you can imagine."
