Can Stewart go to the Mets?
Beltran is injured, this open possibilities. I think they might want Dye, problem is many teams want Dye, and might get into a bidding war.
Beane has been a little too quiet, but Stewart unprobable terrific season so far might give us the trade chip we need.
Humber or Pelfrey?, who else is on the system who can be attractive for us?

zzzzz...
You must be dreaming if you think Stewart would get us Humber or Pelfrey

Because
they have too many injuries in their outfield, and are desperate?

they were desperate last year
for pitching and they didn't make a dumb move

Mets inquired about Blanton,
and were told our asking price was Milledge. I'm shocked the Mets didn't jump on it, but they say it would damage their current team.
So why not Milledge, Pelfrey and Humber for Blanton and Stewart?

So
the Mets refused to trade Milledge for Blanton, but you think that they will trade Milledge, Pelfrey and Humber for Blanton and Stewart?
What makes you think Minaya is willing to give up his top prospects for average players?

Blanton

I concede that Blanton is indeed a good pitcher.
I made the mistake of not checking his numbers before posting.

I believe Pelfry
is represented by Scott Boras, you don't want him, that is nothing but trouble.

The Mets farm system is bone dry
Those two may be the best they can do, but neither of them has had a good season. If I was Minaya and felt I needed an outfielder, I wouldn't hesitate to deal one of them for Stewart. Their numbers the past few years project to back-of-the-rotation starters at best. The Mets can easily pick up those sorts of guys on the free agent market.

Bone dry
depends on how one assesses players like Carlos Gomez and Fernando Martinez.
Pelfrey and Humber have both struggled, Pelfrey with his longstanding quest for either a breaking or offspeed pitch.

Stewart ain't going anywhere
Aside from being the only 300 hitter on the team, the A's get two draft picks for him.

Sorry to burst your bubble
but the A's will be lucky if Stewart is Type B, much less Type A. The formula weights the '06 season as well-- in which Stewart played in 40-something games.

If I'm wrong, Buster Olney is too
I've heard he is worth two from two or three sources. It may have to do with his .300 lifetime average?

Supposedly
Beane has been hard selling Stewart because the A's project his final numbers to qualify him as a Type A. It sounds like a stretch but I don't know the formula.

i say sign stewart
only reason why there was any question about stewart was due to health. now that he has proven himself healthy i say beane needs to sign him for 2x3-4mil. stewart is the best hitter on the friggin' team. i thought that is what we all bitch about-no offense. beane should try to keep stew..not trade him.
p.s. Blanton for Milledge would be a HUGE mistake. can anyone say carlos pena? milledge has been a over-hyper minor leaguer by the new york media. the guy is a punk. meanwhile, blanton is a very good 3-4 starter who busts his ass and gives it all every night out.

there were other questions as well
defense being the biggest one as well...

Bad example--I would LOVE

sure, '07 pena is nice
but again, as you mention, it only took pena 4 yrs and several trips to the minors and being released to "figure it out". as this relates to milledge, i believe the mets have sent him down 2-3 times already due to lack of performance when given the chance. although he has hit well since the break i still say stay away billy!

But unlike Cust and Pena,
who are pushing 30, Milledge is 22--and from all accounts a rather immature 22. I think the jury's still very much out on Milledge. He could be anything from a Dee Brown bust to a Milton Bradley talent/productivity/attitude conundrum to an Alfonso Soriano overpaid star to a solid 5-tool star.
One of the A's problems right now is that they have a lot of low risk/low reward players and prospects and few players with Milledge's ceiling. I don't know that Milledge hiimself is the answer, but I think the A's do need a couple Milledgesque prospects to get out of the rut that is 2007 and the immediate forecast.

i'm OK with that appraoch
i gotta believe there are other "prospects" out there better suited to take a flyer on then milledge...especially if you're talking about trading a guy like blanton.
by bigelephant on Jul 30, 2007 10:22 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Personally, I wouldn't trade Blanton anyway
I'm in the "forget about Harden" camp, which means that if you trade Blanton your 2008 rotation looks like:
Haren
Gaudin
Loiaza
DiNardo
Braden or Meyer
Even the Red Sox, Tigers, and Indians would have trouble winning the division with that rotation, and the A's ain't got a lineup anywhere near what those teams can trot out.
by Nico on Jul 30, 2007 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Though in fairness, Loiaza
IS thought to be a bit better than Loaiza.

I'd look for this in the offseason
I can't see why the Mets would trade for pitching right now, given their own offensive struggles. Blanton would certainly upgrade Jorge Sosa, but they're running out of outfielders.
After this season, once the Tommy G and the M-E(T-S) farewell tour is over, it's going to be a different story. Blanton for Milledge would certainly be too much even then, but I could totally see a Chad Gaudin trade if he doesn't lose it down the stretch.
