DLD 7/3- I am down in the dumps.

"Half a league.  Half a league.  Cannons to the right of me.  Cannons to the left of me.  Cannons in front of me."

This excerpt made me think of our season in a nutshell.  Every time we believe that we are starting to make progress in one area- BOOM!- we quickly find out that we are staring down the barrel of a gun.

Star-divide

Big Frank returned to the Coli last night and we all remembered why we loved him so much.  Check out this beautiful quote, A's fans-

"Last year was my most enjoyable year in baseball ever," Thomas said Monday before playing his first game in Oakland since leaving for Toronto as a free agent.  "Last year it was just extremely fun to play baseball again.  It was a wild bunch of guys who liked to have fun on a daily basis.  I really brought my game back to where it should be last year."

Love ya, Frank.  Thanks for the memorable year and please go 0-fer the rest of the series.

Can't argue with Geren's assessment of last night-

"They got a lot of hits tonight," A's manager Bob Geren said. "They were mostly on balls left over the plate. It wasn't our night on the mound."

Not sure if DiNardo perceives the situation like Geren...

"I felt like I was on my game," DiNardo said. "I was pounding the strike zone down."

No.  The hitters were pounding YOUR strike zone, Lenny.  But wait he has another quote that makes a little more sense-

"It was night and day," DiNardo said. "Basically I was just leaving the ball up in the zone. I wasn't hitting my spots."

Nice recovery, LD.

Apple denies that Universal is pulling their catalog from itunes so we'll see how that shakes out-

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/07/03/BUGM5QPPLG1.DTL

What a precedent this may set?

http://calsun.canoe.ca/News/World/2007/07/03/4308413-sun.html

Have ya tried an Arnold Palmer?  They are delicious and most restaurants now recognize it by name.

http://blogs.chicagotribune.com/news_columnists_ezorn/2007/06/an_arnold_palme.html

I've never done a DLD before so forgive me.  I have to keep my mind occupied on something else after last night's debacle.  Please insert your depressing Rich Harden and Justin Duchscherer news as you see fit.  Dump, dump, dump away!

Jennifer is really in Oakland! I even *met* her!

That's the only positive news I have.

So here's a cute hedgehog wearing a flower.

Gosh darn you to heck!

I just finished preparing a DLD, witha  poll!

Oh well, I'll post it in here:

Just as we were ready to sacrifice Dan Johnson to the AAAA Gods, he goes on another hot streak. If only Crosby could do that.

Now for my typical slate of non-baseball related links:

A drunk Dutch bastard goes sky cycling on the roof of a car. Another case of a guy with a hundred dollar helmet and a ten cent head.

Breaking from tradition, The Rocket get win #350, A-Rod strains a hammy reaching for an excuse to tell his wife why he was with another woman.

A river of oil floods a Kansas town. It's next target is Jennifer's house in Missouri. You got out just in time, Jen.

Paris Hilton's trash is is being sold on eBay. So, pretty much business as usual.

Dracula's castle is for sale. Talk about a feature I'd like to see incorporated into Cisco Field! We could have the batboys emerge from it.

A prehistoric 150 lb. bird had trouble taking off. Kind of like Bobby Crosby's career.

Traditional monkeyball reference: He's been hiding out in Vietnam.

Nico is, apparently, an organism.

Go forth and dump!

River of oil? We used to wish for rivers of oil

How about a river of pig ears, pig grease, and offal?

"Northbound lanes of the Edens Expressway were closed for more than seven hours Sunday after a dump truck carrying greasy pig parts toppled and splattered its load across the highway.

Pig ears, pig feet and grease covered all three lanes of the Edens, (IDT spokesman Claffey) said.

"This is obviously something that's really hard to clean up," Claffey said."

My dad

had a small bald spot on the top of his head, which he told my little brother and me was the result of some careless person having thrown a firecracker at him when he was our age, and therefore we should always be very very careful around fireworks.  So I always was.

Many years after my dad died....maybe not coincidentally on the Fourth of July which was his favorite holiday....I mentioned this traumatic event in his life to my older siblings, who all hooted at me.  The small bald spot on the top of his head was, of course, ordinary male-pattern baldness.

Comcast buys FSN Bay Area

Looks like they are going to rebrand it as Comcast Sportsnet West. Will they keep the other Comcast Sportsnet West as #2?

I like it

when people buy stuff FROM Murdoch.

Remember how many baseball fans root for their teams their whole lives without having the slightest hope of the success that we've enjoyed.

by Englishmajor on Jul 3, 2007 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

question though

it says that Comcast Sports Net is also in Sacramento.

Does that mean that they will now play A's games in Sacramento as well?

by Zonis on Jul 3, 2007 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Comcast Sports has always been in Sacramento, and

we have FSN, that plays the A's games, so they better continue to play them

by theblackpearl on Jul 3, 2007 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope this isn't bad news for NRAFs

The local broadcast deals will remain in place, so probably no change locally (although I wonder about the games now on FSNBA+; does Comcast get that spillover channel too?)

But isn't the MLB Extra Innings package linked to FSN feeds?  Quesiton for Extra Innings consumers:  when you watch a Phillies or Orioles game do you get a feed branded COmcast, or one branded FSN...or nothing at all?  Because if it's the latter, this could be a problem.

As long as Comcast continues to...

...broadcast the CFL on SportsNet we'll all be fine.

Edmonton and Winnipeg had an awesome double OT game the other night that ended in a 39-39 tie.

by Dr Pez on Jul 3, 2007 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

RAF with EI here

Extra Innings picks up the broadcasts from the RSNs (regional sports networks, i.e. cable-and-satellite only channels) for 29 of the 30 clubs.  I believe the only team with telecasts still not licensed to satellite is the Phillies with their telecasts on Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia.

Quite a few teams have telecasts on non-FSN RSNs which appear on EI:  the Yankees (YES) and Royals (RSTN) have their own channels, the Red Sox are on NESN, the White Sox and Cubs are on Comcast SportsNet Chicago...just to name a few.

Our Google ads and what they say

You know, if these "Real Jock" ads had started showing up back in the heyday of butt threads, the cause/effect would have been pretty obvious.  Google ads of course mines the site for content and places ads which it thinks will mesh with user interest.

But the days of rampant butt threads are long behind us (ahem).  So one wonders what mined content is giving rise (ahem) to the Real Jocks?  I'm looking at you, SPWC.

I have another theory for a hot Independence Eve as well.  SPWC is Randy Bell.  Discuss.

Sean Doolittle, Oakland's second pick in the draft, was promoted from Vancouver to Kane County today. The first-baseman had a good handle on Northwest League pitching after two weeks, hitting .283 with a .421 OBP.

Also, Travis Banwart, the A's 4th round pick, was assigned to Kane County.

I did a little research

and have found out more about just who's signed, and who hasn't

http://mvn.com/milb-athletics/2007/0...

It looks like Horton and Demel will probably sign, but Schlereth and Berger are probably going back to Arizona. I'd really like to see Gary Brown sign instead of going to Cal State Fullerton, but considering how many Titans Oakland drafts... we might pick him in three more years anyway.

funny, i laughed when i read about that

just days ago:

What's more, Presti has to hire a coach, and with so much youth on this team, it's just right for Spurs assistant P.J. Carlesimo, who has refined his style and rehabbed his image under Gregg Popovich. Carlesimo would be ideal for developing Seattle's young franchise.
