Morgan Ensberg DFA'd
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/s...
Ensberg used to be a good power hitter, but has really sucked the past two seasons.
Stats: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/player...
Lately, he has represented a Jack Cust type player, with a low average but a very large number of walks. But just 2 years ago he was an all star, with a line of 283/388/557. According to the article, he has never been the same since tearing a tendon in his shoulder.
The point is.. Is this a good guy to buy low on?

I'm not sure either
If we brought him in, he'd be primarily for next year wouldn't he? He could DH if the A's are willing to have an outfield of Cust-Swisher-Buck with Barton at first and Ensberg DHing, while also having the ability to spell Chavez (finally, a good backup third baseman). As of this year, Ensberg is a much better hitter against lefties (OPS is 130 points higher), so he could be platooned.
The more I think about it, the more i like an acquisition of Ensberg. He's like Richie Sexson right now, except that he made around 4.5 million this year.
If we got Ensberg, I'd see him as our primary
backup at 3rd Base and First Base.
If DJ AND Piazza are traded, then I could see Ensburg DHing for us. But, if either one is retained, Barton is called up, and the other is the DH.
As for 2008, if he was cheap, he'd be our 3B and 1B Backup, but I'd see Snelling being our DH for the week or so that he'd be healthy.
His $4.3 million salary makes him unattractive...
for BB. Other than that, I think he would be a good 1B/3B backup. We could definitely use a backup at 3B. Fits the typical A's mold and I'm not sure that mold works anymore

typical A's mold
Isn't that the green fuzzy stuff DJ is covered with from sitting in the dank dugout for a week?
Danke.

Ensberg
As of this year and last, he represents that low average/high walk player that the A's seem to be full of. On the other hand, if he was on the A's, he'd be one of the few players with potential for a big season. He's had some high average seasons along with the high OBP's, so we know he's capable. I'm hoping a change of scenery will bring him back to that. And as I showed with the splits above, he's also a good platoon candidate.
he's only signed through this year
Why in the world would we bother?
If he was signed through '08 or '09, sure, he'd be a great addition.
But to spend any money or talent to acquire him just for this year?
Depends if he clears waivers.
Then we're only on the hook for the league minimum. I agree he's not worth trying to acquire via trade.
yeah, but still ...
... why even bother? There's no real reason for Beane to scratch and claw to keep from sinking below the Rangers.
Yeah.
A lot of it depends on who the A's trade in the next couple of days.
Also, I bet the Astros are resigned to paying most of his remaining salary in any trade. Otherwise, he'll walk, they'll get nothing for him...and they'll still have to pay him.
well, if we trade Chavvy for A-Rod ...
... Ensberg would be a good backup.
In that limited circumstance,
he'd provide a warm body to play out the string at third if Chavvy were shut down for the year.
and the likelihood of the latter happening is ...
I was under the impression
That he still had another year before free agency.
Cots sez he's on a 1-yr deal
Now, if he's signed through '08, and he can be acquired on the cheap, yeah.
Although ... do we really want another 3B with a damaged shoulder?
I could easily be wrong but...
When Cot's says he's on a one year deal, I think it means he avoided arby by signing that deal. Cot's also says he had 4.095 service time (and I think that means at the beginning of this year), which would mean he would have one more year with the team he signs with.
I just checked Cot's future FA list and he is on the list for 2008-2009 not 2007-2008 so I'm pretty sure I'm right.
As for picking Ensberg up, it would make a lot of sense if it meant trading Chavvy. If we could trade Chavvy, Kotsay and Loaiza in the offseason, we would have a lot of money freed up (enough to pursue ARod?). I'm all for that.
splits
Perhaps not surpisingly his splits show about 100 points higher slugging percentage at home than away the last 3 years.
We don't need anymore declining 3rd baseman
we already have Chavez we don't need another

if we were in contention
then he might make some sense given he's really a platoon player who hits LH's better than RH's, which is exactly what the A's need. But, seeing as he'll be available as a FA in 2008, I wouldn't make any kind of trade to get him.
The DFA Route
The Ensberg DFA is a really interesting phenomenon, and ties in with the Kielty and Bradley DFAs. Because NOBODY is trading prospects worth anything these days, older players with mixed track records are being dumped without the guarantee of any return. I'm starting to wonder if we're seeing a new trend throughout baseball.
It wouldn't surprise me if DJ and Kennedy are DFA'd before the season is over.

On the surface....
picking up Ensberg cheap could be a great deal. He CAN hit, can play either corner position which makes him attractive esp if DJ is really going to be moved by the deadline.
The second I saw that he was DFA'ed my mouth started watering a bit.
Thus ends my first post here on "Athletics Nation".

what is that, Klingon?
Why don't the A's and 'Stros
The reason to pick up Ensberg for 2008 would be Chavez-insurance. Now you have a 2-to-make-1 on talented injured declining 3Bmen. Plus, the A's don't have enough injured players. And I think Ensberg should meet Larry Davis.
