Worst 5-through-9 hitting order in the major this year?
Probably tonight's A's lineup: Ellis, Kotsay, Scutaro, Crosby, Suzuki.
Seriously, Geren just doesn't get it, does he? Neither does Beane for that matter. Mark Ellis should never be hitting fifth in a major league lineup. Kotsay and Crosby shouldn't be in a major league lineup right now.
There is a reason this team is 47-52, and it's all about franchise management. Beane is letting us down; Wolff is letting us down. it's not about blind loyalty here; it's about expecting the ownership and the general manager to put a competitive team on the field, injuries or not. And this isn't it.
If I was Kelvim Escobar, I'd be laughing at this lineup. Maybe that's why he let the first three guys get hits, eh? :)
GO A'S!

Yawn.
Yawn again.
Yeah, that's pretty much how I felt watching ...
Bases loaded, no outs? The A's get ONE run, because their five- and six-hitters have no business being where they are in the lineup. Fundamentals, indeed.
Yawn all you want -- maybe Beane and Geren will hear the yawns from the sparse crowds at the Coliseum and decide to do something about it.
Until then, we're stuck with the out-dated status quo of this team.
Can you just stop writing diaries?
This subject is getting old. I think you've mentioned about 80 times in the past 2 weeks that you don't like Wolff, Geren, and Beane. What DO you like about the A's? Anything at all? Uniform colors? Stomper? Larry Davis' incredible mustache?
I'm sorry for being honest.
I guess you like being 10.5 games out of first place.
I don't, and I'm not going to defend mediocrity.
I'll just pretend the A's are good like everyone else does, and just blame it all on injuries.
Bye.
You could write something original,
rather than stating the obvious. What were you hoping for tonight, Jack Cust at 2B? You don't have to "defend mediocrity"--you could just write something interesting or not write a diary at all. It's not compulsory.
re
I actually wouldn't mind a DJ at 3B experiment, while Chavvy is hurt. What's the worst that could happen? DJ at 3B, Swisher in CF, and Cust at 1st. It'd be fun at least.
The worst thing that could happen
is that every game would be like the Scutaro nightmare game against Seattle.
Let's think positive
Mariners are starting to suck,, we kicked the Angels ass last night, and started tonight with 3 straight hits and already a run on the board..
Lets GO OAK-LAND,, baby steps.....lets root for single digits games back!!

The only better option
Would be to have Jack Cust in the lineup instead of Kotsay. Other than that, there is no point to what you are saying. Those are the players that are on the team. If you are criticizing the fact that it's Beane's fault that the players we have suck, then fine, but you're beating a horse that died in 1920.
So seriously. Saying Geren just "doesn't get it" is, well, for lack of a better word, stupid. These are the players on the A's. Get used to it.
there are a few things wrong with the offense
but people keep overreacting. in addition to injuries (whether by built in risk or bad luck), we've had a fluky number of GIDP this season. that's hurt a lot. were it not for a few of these factors, we'd have a league average offense. as it stands, we're probably around 22nd overall, not dead last, but certainly not great.
subtracting negatives like Kendall and hopefully Kotsay will bring us much closer to league average. Crosby will probably be given more time to turn it around, but removing him would also be a plus at this point.
i guess my point is... i don't think the A's as built are really an 85 win team. this might end up being an 85 win season, but there's reason to hope for, an even expect, more from these guys.
GIDP's
I don't think it's a fluke at all. Beane covets guys who put the bat on the ball (Kendall/Kotsay, etc.). He also doesn't like the "Strike-em-Out / Throw-em-Out" DP. So, we ground into a lot of inning ending DP's. We led the league last year (I think), and we'll probably always be in the TOP 5 w/ Beane as our GM.
BTW: Does the "Strike-em-Out / Throw-em-Out" count as a DP?
Cheers,
CF

It's a DP but not a GIDP
Technically any play which results in two outs between pitches is a double play. However, the many less common forms of double play (strikeout/throwout, busted sac fly/play at the plate, lineout/step on the bag, Calero RBI single resulting in two Twins getting thrown out, etc.) are not considered GIDPs against the hitter.
i think it's a fluke because
the GIDPs are spread fairly evenly. Stewart leads with 12, but we have a bunch of regulars with 8 or more, including Buck and Swisher. i think that's a bit strange. especially since our GB% is not that high at 42% and our team BABIP is a putrid .280– that's probably bad luck too.
have to factor...
the low slugging percentage into the equation, too. The overall GB% may not be all that high, but it doesn't need to be very high for a predominantly station-to-station team to produce a lot of double plays....

yeah
our SLG isn't great (24th in all of baseball i think) but our ISO suggests a bit more pop. that and our BABIP suggest we should have more singles. i think that's actually what the offense has been missing more than power.
You stole 43 seconds of my life ...
and I want them back!
Negative vibes, man!
Did you take Randy Bell?
Where is that guy?
He owned this place during the pre-season.

Yes, "McP" is short for "McPoppy".
He's my love child with McFood. But I'm still going to stand up at your wedding and claim that you're the father.
Okay, I'll start
FIRE GEREN NOW!!!!
Has Billy jumped the shark?
Or is it McP I see up on those skis wearing Fonzie's jacket? It's really nice to hear from you again, Oaktoon.

The fact that McP
is (allegedly) a scout for an MLB franchise is something I find - what's the word? - hilarious.
wrong acro: it's a McD franchise
that "allegedly"...
should be in bold, italics, underscored...bust out the special font formatting if you have to for this occasion

I agree that
Ellis should never be put in the #5 slot, the only problem is that there were few options given that Chavez wasn't playing and he chose Kotsay over Cust to play the outfield. I have no idea if Buck could play center, and leave Cust in right but that was the only option he had to put a lineup differently than he did. The fact he didn't play DJ, and move Swisher to center says one of two things, he is tired of Swisher running into walls in the outfield, or DJ is soon to be gone. I personally don't think Swisher is a very good center fielder, no range at all. Kotsay has range, but watching him hit is painful.
