Kielty Designated for Assignment
Street back from the DL
OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's today reinstated right-handed pitcher Huston Street from the 15-day disabled list and designated outfielder Bobby Kielty for assignment.
Street was placed on the DL retroactive to May 13 with an irritation in his right ulnar nerve. He pitched for Triple-A Sacramento on a rehab assignment on Saturday against Salt Lake, allowing one hit and striking out two in one inning. Street was 2-1 with a 2.50 ERA and nine saves in 18 appearances with Oakland before the injury.
Kielty was batting .200 with no home runs and three RBI in 13 games with the A's this year. He was on the disabled list from April 29 to July 8 with a strained left calf and hit .250 in four games since his return from the DL. Kielty was originally acquired by the A's from Toronto on November 18, 2003 along with cash considerations for Ted Lilly. He hit .250 with 25 home runs and 127 RBI in 293 games with A's and is a .255 career hitter with 52 home runs and 244 RBI in 579 games in his Major League career.

Probably inevitable
And on a subjective level, I'm not sorry. I can't ever recall seeing him do something good or useful for the A's.
He was going to be traded by the deadline in any case, so I'm on board with clearing a roster spot in preparation for what everyone in the biz must have known was a fait accompli.

HW off KRod!
Remember? What was that ... 2005? Turned out not to matter because Harden and Crosby got hurt (again), but that was a big HR.

Grand Slam Last Year
Vs. Cleveland in late September. Wasn't a walk off, but Cleveland has always been tough on us and we weren't doing well against Cliff Lee. It may not sound that sexy, but it was pretty big at the time..

I miss Lilly
One of the worst trades I can remember was the Ted Lilly for Bobby Kielty deal.
by Mulderfan on Jul 23, 2007 5:06 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Remember, Lilly was up for arbitration
Lilly was going to ask (gasp! and get!) for $2.5 million or so! These were in the Schott days, when no one got rewarded for past performance. So before arbitration could occur, they traded Lilly.
Why did Beane get Kielty? Because Kielty pinch-hit and hit a home run to win a game vs the A's while with Minnesota. Beane seems to go after those guys.
I also winced about that one, because basically, it means we got Kielty for Bondermann.
by One won lost won on Jul 23, 2007 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why Kielty?
You don't trade a quality starting pitcher for a medicore pinch hitter. Pinch hitter's usually are veterans that don't receive much playing time and come cheap. Example, Julio Franco with the Braves. Kielty was just a mediocre extra outfielder, and Lilly was a quality big game pitcher. Maybe trading Lilly was a good thing with his price, but the A's could have gotten much more than Kielty.

In 2002 Kielty hit .291

But on the plus side
it inspired a great limerick.
Beane's outfield was so bad he felt he
Should make it less Lucy Van Pelty,
While JP's poor mound
Was too Charlie Browned:
And thus was born Lilly-for-Kielty.

well, that confirms it ...

Or Clowns.....
I had a female friend at work who was absolutely terrified of clowns.
So of course, every once in a while, I'd call her and just play circus music into the phone.
Maybe someone at AN did that to BB today.

My friend has that same fear
I don't torture on purpose but its sure funny when it happens. But I can understand that sort of fear. It scared the bejesus outta me as a kid.

I'm not *That* cruel....
I never put a prop clown in her car or anything like that.
It was a game more then anything. I'd play the circus music, she'd shriek, and we'd both laugh.
(Yes, I had the hots for her - no one ever taught me how to flirt properly.)

I always wondered about that
Beane traded away Bradley for no apparent reason, and if the A's don't keep Shannon Stewart they will have no black people. I think Kielty was the only red head so I think that needs a little more evidence.

is your diet low in iron?
DJ's a redhead, and so's Hatteberg.
by monkeyball on Jul 23, 2007 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
they were different cases
Hatteberg had signed as a free agent with the Reds. Not to mention he had a contract extention during his time in Oakland. Oh yeah and the A's let him walk so they could let Dan Johnson play some first (red head) along with Swisher. And Dan Johnson hasn't been traded yet, so rumors are not enough to judge Billy is against red heads.

Thanks
Great props to whomever posted the diary about the pending roster crunch earlier today. I did not think about the effects of Street's return, but the author of that diary correctly identified that there was going to be a roster move like this on the horizon. I had just assumed (since this is generally what it's like) that some minor leaguer would go down, without thinking about who was actually on the roster. So again, nice job on the part of that poster.

Do you mean math math, or baseball math (statistics)?

Hmm..
I meant math math, as in majored in math in college, but now I'm finding absolutely no record of that, and am wondering where exactly I got this impression.
I haven't refuted it yet either, but it's possible that I'm the one who'll have to revise his opinion..

I remember an article on the official site
about how much he likes calculus.
Ah, found it!
http://www.mlb.com/content/printer_f...
Kielty said that as a sixth-grader he placed first in a county-wide math competition. He took his first calculus class at Canyon Springs (Calif.) High School, aced the calculus Advanced Placement exam, and took four more classes on the subject in college at Southern California (1996-97) and the University of Mississippi (1998).

I remember
that grand slam last year. I was at the game with my dad and I remember it was a VERY cool moment because it was a no-doubter. Kielty slammed it, threw his bat, and watched it for a little. The pics from that shot were awesome too and I had them as a screen saver for a while.

Kielty's Career
Unfortunately Kielty has undermined his own major league career by insisting on sticking with switch-hitting even though he hits poorly from the left-hand side. He hits very well as a right-handed hitter and it's unlikely that he would have that significant a drop-off if he stayed batting right-handed against right-handed pitchers. Most guys don't show that big a drop-off. At one point last season his slugging percentage batting right-handed was even better than Frank Thomas'. He will probably continue to insist on being a switch-hitter and that will continue to cost him. It's his career but it's too bad.

And that walk off against the Rangers!
I remember going to a game against the Rangers in 2006 I think (maybe 2005), where Francisco Cordero blew the save in the 9th inning (back when Francisco Cordero was considered very good). My family and I sat SWELTERING in the sun until the 14th inning when Bobby Kielty hit a no doubter into the Right Field bleachers. Thanks for that, Bobby! Good luck to him.
BTW, huge mistake to trade Milton Bradley!
Also, I took my Mom to the Orioles game Sunday when the A's didn't even score. Two hits to cheer about. Made me wonder what else I could do with my Mom that would be funner. Does anybody know of a Pig Hunting guide that charges a reasonable rate? Contact me at erikmannie@gmail.com.

Good Luck But Not Missed
Kielty's hair was fun, but the Little League-esque, "I can't believe I actually got a hit, grandpa!" stuff was a little over the top. It was one thing for me to think the guy had barely a prayer up there; it was annoying to hear him confirm that he felt the same way.

Bah!
I remember all of the arguements about how Kielty had so much more upside than Eric Byrnes because BK was 6 months younger than Byrnes.
Playing for Billy Beane is the kiss of death for a player's career. Maybe BK will get lucky and find a team that will give him a real chance. They will just have to be ready to put up with the ugliest man in MLB.
