Was Gaudin robbed?
The A's own the best pitching ERA as well as severall other stats including the lowest SLG, OBA, WHIP, AVG in the AL. Though only 1 pitcher from that staff made it to the All Star game, Dan Haren, the league leader in ERA.

Haren, Gaudin and Blanton are all in the top 10 in ERA, with Haren and Gaudin in the top 5. The Angels, who possess the third best ERA in the AL have 2 pitchers in the all star game in Lackey and K-Rod, and Escobar can be voted in. When i got to mlb.com to vote for the final spot, it shows me their stats on the ballot:
PITCHER TEAM W L ERA IP K
J Bonderman DET 8 1 3.90 90.0 82
K Escobar LAA 9 3 3.32 100.1 80
R Halladay TOR 9 3 4.27 103.1 65
P Neshek MIN 3 0 1.37 39.1 47
H Okajima BOS 2 0 0.92 39.0 35
Now throw Gaudin's stats in there:
C Gaudin OAK 7 3 2.92 101.2 65
Gaudin also has better stats than a lot of the pitchers that have already made the team.
I have to go, i wanted to write more, but please give your thoughts and feelings.

I (and many) believe that All-Stars
should represent more than a hot first half. I think Gaudin will continue to be good -- but with the exception of Okajima (who is a rookie phenom and a bone for Japanese fans) and Gil Meche (who is the Royals' lone rep), all of the other guys are established high level performers.
Take Roy Halladay, for instance. He has the worst stats of any of the guys on the team or in the running -- but can you honestly say that you think Chad Gaudin is more of a star than him?
Maybe in a year or two ... but not yet.

Middle relievers? Seriously?
Neshek and Okajima have been good, but middle relievers? Come on.
Halladay's been average (by his standards), but let's be honest, I think Escobar and Bonderman deserve the nod over Gaudin.

What's wrong with middle relievers?
Are Okajima and Neshek less good at getting batters out? Surely you don't mean that they shouldn't be all stars because they don't rack up sexy stats like starters and closers, right?

Middle relievers
have lower ERAs than starters as a general rule. Starters have to pitch to the same hitters 2 or 3 times a game (i.e. you need to have more than 2 above average pitches to post a decent ERA). You've also got small sample size at work here; Okajima and Neshek have only pitched 30 some innings. Look at Harden's insane stats so far, same thing.
It's also a testiment to how their managers feel about their pitchers; how can you pick a middle reliever if he's not even the best reliever on his own team?

I could be wrong,
but I think what was meant by "sexy stats" was that starters have wins (which the people who pick all-stars love), closers have saves (which the people who pick all-stars love) and middle relievers have holds (which nobody seems to care about).
And closers aren't always the best relievers on their teams (e.g. Joe Borowski, Bob Wickman).

Question
Who was the A's player most deserving who did not get selected? I would argue that Blanton is a better pitcher than Gaudin, mostly based on the number of walks that the big G gives up.
But otherwise, what was the last A's non-pitcher to show up at the All-Star game?
(Duke, Zito, Haren, and who else recently?)

Thanks.
So it's just recently that it's been pitchers only.
It would be fun to have a position player show up again, but that would require somebody to break .300!

i agree with that as well
i didn't have enough time to talk about blanton. I just think it's lame that neither of them were even mentioned in the all star talks. I believe blanton even beats lackey in certain categories.

Since we're talking about Gaudin
what does Gaudin throw? Fastball-Slider? Does he throw a 4-seamer and a 2-seamer?
