Don't trade Dan Johnson
I think this would be a mistake, unless you can get some serious value in return.
The rumors I hear are DJ going to the Yankees for Scott Proctor. I don't like that; it's basically giving DJ away for a Calero-type reliever. Middle relievers are a dime a dozen today; if one guy fails, you move on to the next until one sticks. Seriously: Proctor has a career ERA of 4.25 -- is that all DJ is commanding on the market?
I know DJ isn't young anymore, and last year really set him back. But he's a solid hitter: an .806 OPS in 2005 and an .812 OPS this year. Take him out of the A's lineup, and you're losing one of the few semi-productive hitters out there. Yes, I know the Barton theory, but if you're going to try and trade Piazza anyway, Barton will find a place in the lineup with DJ still here.

This would make a great comment
in any of the other existing DJ diaries.

i think the theory is that
the hitting will come around (which I truly doubt) to score more than 3 runs eventually. And then we need relief pitching to hold that lead......
with this bunch of guys i donot see the hitting coming around in any big way except for maybe a game here or there.......

Easy decision for me
There's no future for Barton/DJ/Cust all on the roster. Barton's and DJ's minor league numbers are very close, leading the A's to project that Barton will be at least an adequate replacement for DJ - plus he's 5 years younger. Neither one has another legitimate position. To some degree, they're making the decision that Cust projects as a better DH than DJ, they control him for a longer period, and DJ can bring something better in return at this point.
That said, I'd be disappointed if Proctor was what we got in return.

I agree with your post 100%. Proctor for DJ
could be the exact reason that the talks have stalled. I'm not really sure if any Yankee prospects get me too excited.

He's awesome.
But the Yankees are probably still laughing if the A's suggested trading DJ for him.
